Michigan is 1-3 when Lewis Garrison refs

Submitted by bluesalt on February 12th, 2019 at 11:31 PM

And 21-0 when anyone else does.  That is a problem, B1G.

Our only win was in the opener against Norfolk State (although I couldn’t find the refs for the South Carolina game.)

Fact is the offense isn’t there. Doesn’t matter who refs. I’m the first to come to players defense when there’s poor officiating but they weren’t able to execute in the first half. This has been a problem since the Purdue game way back when. Not the same rhythm or perimeter talent of past years.

Or maybe they're just dragging themselves through the regular season against the dregs?  They played pretty well against Wisconsin Saturday, and beat the living shit out of IU a couple weeks ago.  I'll bet they bring some attention to the MSU games in the near future.

I agree that coasting through some mid-season slack is not a good look, nor does it create an edge for the NCAA tunamelt*.

They barely got 60 against Wisconsin. They are gonna face much more athletic and dialed in teams in the tournament. If it happened one or two times or even three I’d be ok, but looking poor against Wisconsin twice does not point to good things against teams they could potentially face in the tournament

If I’ve learned anything here at MGoBlog, it’s that when we lose, it’s likely because of the refs.  If it wasn’t for bad officials cheating we would be undefeated and have multiple national titles in every sport.

I did not see the game. I will assume there is, at least, some validity to the officiating complaints. I am reminded of what a great coach I played for advised us of "There is one thing there is no rule against-bad officiating."

This is not the most physically gifted team around...they need to play close to their potential to win.

Will Poor Officiating + Lack of Depth = Problems?

Adding to the poor officiating last night was the problem caused by lack of depth on the roster.

Despite the recent funk, I think that Michigan has over-performed this season. It might be that this team's great start to the season masked a weakness that could play out down the stretch.

Besides missing three of last season’s top four scorers (Wagner, Abdur-Rahkman, Robinson) and the three-point shooting that they provided, of the players who played in at least 30 of the 41 games last season, nine (including three freshmen, Poole, Livers and Brooks) averaged at least ten minutes a game and a tenth (Jaaron Simmons) averaged eight minutes a game.

This season, it’s likely that only seven players and one freshman (leading scorer Ignas Brazdeikis) will average as many as ten minutes a game; no other player currently averages as many as five minutes a game.

This team is getting worn down and the schedule won’t get any easier with four of the final six, regular-season games coming against Michigan State and Maryland, along with a road game against Minnesota.  After losing to the team with the worst record in the conference, splitting those six games wouldn’t be a shock, and that would make the Wolverines 8-6 over their final 14 regular-season games.

Strange Stat: Maybe experience in close games won't matter much down the stretch, but Michigan has played only four games this season that were decided by eight points or fewer, and only two of those were decided by two points (wins at Northwestern in December and at home against Minnesota in January).  The others were an 80-72 win at Crisler over Western Michigan on December 15 and last night's 75-69 loss at Penn State.  Last season, 12 of Michigan's games were decided by eight points or fewer, and by this time last season, the Wolverines had played in nine of those games.

Let’s not be that fan base. This team lost and will lose more because the offense has not been developed. That is solely on the coaches, especially the head coach. That’s his baby and he hasn’t gotten it done. He deserves the pass he’s getting but these disappointments are his to own. The refs were painful but this team wasn’t prepared in the first half.

Your takes are more shallow than a cup of water.  22-3 and you surmise we suck and we will lose more because of our offense.  Sorry but your analogy has already been disproved.  We have serious lags on offense, however we almost never have,”serious” lags on defense.  We have and can win with our defense and mediocre offense.  I refuse to point out each game.  You’ve probably never played a game whereas the officials performed as great as they did last night.  Today I will also surmise that if; John Beilein does not get tossed we make the proper adjustments and eventually pull this win out.

In Purdue's game at PSU, they were jobbed by the refs as well.  They did manage to pull the game out in OT, but had that game been called equitably, they wouldn't have needed OT and would have won by double digits.

If the conference is smart (which they have not been in the past).  We will not see any of these 3 officials for the rest of the season doing our games.  They should try to protect them from more backlash and assign these individuals elsewhere.

Just trying to find something positive after last night's amateur hour from an officiating standpoint.

Guess we're now beyond holding the team accountable for poor play. Always has to be the ref's fault.

The team played like crap on the road against a team that literally had nothing to lose. Penn State is not fighting for a spot in the tournament, so there was no pressure on them to do anything of note. They played better, and Michigan deserved to lose. Plain and simple.

Michigan also played like crap in the other two games its lost this year. They in no way deserved to beat Iowa, and while the Wisconsin game was close, Matthews and Brazdeikis combined for I think four points. Maybe two. Michigan has screwed itself in all of the games it lost.

I get it. It was a bad call last night, and Beilein had a right to be upset. But Michigan put itself in a position against an awful team where that call had to affect the outcome of the game. The #6 team in America shouldn't be in that position. Especially against an 8-15 team.

Perk your high road is broken.  When you are hit, hacked, pushed, and elbowed all game without any resolve, sorry son the young men are not to blame.  If someone hacked your checking account would you just say oh well I should’ve watched my bank statements more often?  That game was Bullshit!  Period.

I'm just tired of people on this board solely blaming the refs when things don't go Michigan's way, or claiming that there is some conspiracy where people are out to get Michigan. What would the conference have had to gain by Michigan losing? We're the highest-ranked team, and if recent history is any indication, we're the conference's best chance at a national title. Even after last night. If these calls went against Penn State or if their coach got ejected, no one on this board would've batted an eye lash about it. But they went against us and Michigan lost, so there's a conspiracy and everyone is out to get us.....

I don't disagree that it was a bad call, but the team still, by its own poor play, put itself in a position where that call had to affect the outcome of the game. If you want to be upset at the refs, fine. But some people seem to forget that the onus is still on the team to make shots and play defense. Neither of which they did very well yesterday.

You actually went through the whole schedule and got the names of the officials for every game? That's next level reaching and excuse searching.

Says the guy who created an account here last night.

I'd say you are Harrison or Delaney, but it's more likely just a PSU troll. A B1G basketball fan who equates himself with football, well UM, MSU, OSU, Wisconsin all have decent basketball and football teams, so I can understand being a pedo state fan but have football be your thing.

Lol so odd to me....you are on our D's so much you create an account to flap your gums.

I give two shits about any other rival site or what they are saying... think about that for more than your normal attention span of 2 seconds. You got too much time on your hands, go find a woman...or man...whatever floats your boat

Refs were really bad, but Michigan spent the first 25 minutes kicking it around on the perimeter for off balance threes and didn't even attempt to rebound. I know there's a lot more to it than that, but they have lost 3x now when they get off balance like that and become one dimensional. They aren't 2018 Nova.

Also the ref said something to JB which is why he turned around.

I did not see any of the first half and it seems as though that was fortunate for me from what I have read about the refs in the first half.  I did however watch the second half and how in the world do you miss a blatant double dribble at the collegiate level?  It seemed as though the refs were overwhelmed in this game which should never be the case at this level.  That is something you would see in a youth basketball league where the refs get so flustered they just can't officiate properly.

After reading this thread I'm amazed at how many people lack the simple understanding that UM playing bad in the first half and the refs being crap all night are not mutually exclusive. Both happened and impacted the outcome of the game.

Nobody brought up the missed double dribble at once , somebody said they missed two of them, that one with the clock at 1 sec and that j was a dagger !

This crew was awful last night, just awful.

A ref that boots Beilein is in need of scrutiny from the powers to be. Personally think the guy is a bit to sensitive to referee B1G games. Better suited for junior high. Thin skinned is not good in the reffing business.

This is fair to say - Poole and Simpson played poorly last night and that's a significant reason why they lost.  The way characterize it is this - Both teams have one real "shooter".  Ours went 1-of-8 and theirs went 5-of-8.  If both hit their average (3-of-8) we win comfortably.

At the same time, in the three B10 games of ours that this guy was assigned we saw that Michigan's performance was affected by the officiating.  It is also hard to make a case that any of the other games on Michigan's schedule were notably affected by officiating.  (I thought Michigan got a generous whistle in a couple of games, maybe you could argue the MN game was called in a way that hurt Michigan.)

@ Wisconsin:

  • Michigan gets called for a bunch of charges
  • Michigan is called for 17 fouls against Wisconsin's 11
  • Michigan's attempts to intentionally foul aren't called until it is away from the ball and results in a flagrant

@ Iowa:

  • Teske and Livers are called for a bunch of marginal fouls in the first few minutes, forcing Michigan to play a host of bench warmers
  • In the second half the whistle seems to change to the point where more physical play is allowed without calls
  • Michigan is called for 20 fouls versus Iowa's 14
  • Iowa shoots twice as many FTs

@ PSU:

  • Beilein gets two quick T's and is ejected for the first time in 40 years.
  • Iggy and Poole are both called for some light fouls on the perimeter and their playing time is affected.  One of Iggy's fouls was called when he literally didn't touch anyone
  • Simpson is crushed on a questionable screen, in a half with only 3 fouls against PSU
  • They missed one of the all-time double-dribbles that would get called in a 1st grade game
  • Fouls are 21 vs 13 and FTs are 16 vs 34 (admittedly aided by late game time)

At our next officials meeting, I am sure our league director can just show us the video from this game and say.  Tonight we are going to count and see how many calls were missed and how to professionally administer a technical foul.  This game will serve as a great tutorial on how NOT to officiate.

Beilein did state that he will take up the officiating at the league level.  FWIW

He is surely aware of the history with these officials that is discussed below.

Personal fouls in the 3 losses this year (Michigan with the larger #) 17-11 @ Wisconsin, 20-14 @ Iowa, 21-13 @ PSU)

In all other games (Michigan first) 18-22, 8-17, 20-20, 12-14, 18-19, 5-17, 14-21, 9-12, 15-12, 14-21, 14-20, 14-15, 12-7, 13-16, 16-14, 16-19, 14-18, 17-18, 9-13

In wins, average is 13.5 fouls per game, in the 3 losses 19.3

I've watched every game this season and all 3 losses I'm left scratching my head at the calls.
