Greg Mattison Rumblings

Submitted by DaveHuck on January 7th, 2019 at 1:04 PM

Isiaah Hole just tweeted out an “woo boy”, followed by a “Say it ain’t so Matty” from Chris Wormley. Rumblings starting that Greg Mattison May be announcing retirement. Nothing confirmed, but there are several tweets with Mattison’s name linked.  Bummer, if true.

Andrew Dakich leaving Michigan wasn't a blow to anything..... well, maybe our sideline entertainment.

Boren left blaming the of a lack of values in the program, he went to osu....lol

Mattison will have to take a RMD from is retirement account next year, he hasn't been a DC for years....  If losing mattison is what it took to keep Washington, I'm good with that.

He was making 750k at Michigan. If OSU is doubling his salary, even if only for a year or two, it'd be hard not to move. Sucks, but only because its OSU. None of us wanted him as DC.

That's the thing.  People are upset about this.  But Brown leaving and Mattison becoming DC again at 70 would have IMO been been way worse.   IMO Mattison was always an above-average but unspectacular DC.   If we have to replace Brown, I would look in a different direction.

If OSU wants Mattison to be DC, I kind of have to ask, why?  They can get any DC in the country.  Mattison is a solid choice and I can certainly see a lot of teams that would benefit from him, but I find it hard to believe he was #1 on OSU's list.

Fields . . . Washington . . . Mattison . . . their new QB coach . . . whether all this pans out or not, it's clear that Ohio State is stepping up to their   A+ game.

We need to keep pace.

We don't have the luxury of "Just wait until every Michigan player is an experienced 5 star then it'll all be OK."

We need a sense of urgency.  We need to be making moves now that will give us an edge.

I think it's a good idea to search and read umbig11's posts lately. Not saying something couldn't have changed that changes the rumors, but rumors are rumors...

Stay calm and rational, family! We will be fine, regardless.

It appears Harbaugh and Brown decided not to renew his expiring contract, so there is more to this story not being told.  I guess the self scout of the defense put the blame on the DL or maybe they had to promise Al Washington the DL job to keep him.

Does Partridge move back to LBs/Viper and Devin Bush (senior) is hired as the new safeties coach ?

If we’re all just jumping to conclusions, I think this is the one that makes the most sense.  Brown told Harbaugh the DL was the weak link this season and wanted to start the young guys with some new ideas — like getting your hands up to bat passes down.  Contract up, thanks but we’re going to pass.

OSU fans aren’t happy about it.  I don’t see this as a “BIG MOVE” by Day at all — taking an old, Michigan cast off.

If what you think is true, this is good.  IF Washington stays to coach DL, this is huge. This would mean Brown is staying.  Actually, if things shake out as you note above, I am all in on these moves. If you can keep Brown, Washington, Partridge and get Bush a job coaching safeties, I will take it.

I know most of us are speaking out of emotions right now... but I think when the dust is settled we all must look at this with a broader perspective.

Yes, he is going to OSU. But let's say the suspicions are correct, and he takes the DC job at OSU.

First thing's first, that is a position that couldn't be offered to Mattison at UM unless Brown leaves as well. This will come with a pay raise and a promotion.

Second, Mattison stuck around Michigan for Harbaugh's first four years despite getting demoted to a position coach. I don't recall if his pay stayed the same or not - I would assume he didn't get a deduction in salary. That being said, he still stuck around for 4 more years after being demoted essentially. Mattison loves Michigan. Maybe there is a little bit of conflict with the staff; maybe there isn't. Either way, Mattison gave some long tough years to this program, so to chastise him for going to our rival is a bit understandable but I believe a bit over-stepping it.

It will be a little bit different if he made a horizontal move without a major pay increase, but I doubt that is the case.

Mattison is not the enemy. OSU is the enemy.

Can't be mad at him.  Demoted from DC to D-line coach, has an opportunity to be a DC again... where is it written that you lose your ambition/pride/self-worth at 70?

"Thank You!" for years of dedication to Michigan, Coach Mattison.  Good luck to you., except in the last regular season game because you're going to wish you had retired.  Go Blue!

Right!  Putting the "loyalty" issue aside in a business awash with multiple stops for coaches with even 5 years on their resume, it seems there's nothing but positives for him here.  He gets to make this upward move, still staying relatively close to his family, and frankly, it's a big statement that he's getting one of college football's premier coaching positions at 70!

Came back in after snow blowing 6” of heavy snow to see Mattison isn’t retiring, but going to the dark side. Double whammy for me. I hate snow and Ohio State.

if this is all true, congrats for the promotion but this one hurts. the man has been incredible for this program and to lose him to the main rival is painful. but two opposite thoughts come to mind. 1. are folks bailing because they've had enough of Harbaugh? it's been known folks get tired of him after a 3-5 year period. Or, and I'm trying to be positive here, is Harbaugh being as straightforward as he possibly can in assessing the team's strenghts and weaknesses and ultimately giving coaches the "opportunity" at other places?

Now if Coach Matty takes Al Washington, wouldn't that be the double kick in the nuts?

I'm less concerned about this from a coaching perspective than I am recruiting.  He had a great reputation with recruits and their families.  Maybe there is something wrong in house, but he was the DC and was replaced by Don Brown.  I thought it was because he wanted less responsibility.  Maybe there was more to it.  If he wanted to be the DC and wasn't going to have that opportunity at Michigan than good luck.  Wish it hadn't been to OSU though...

This is a slap in the face to the program, no matter how you spin it

Of course, Mattison can do whatever he wants, but this is a big fuck you to Michigan, the players, his fellow coaches, and the fans

How this affects recruiting is yet to be seen. Mattison was a pretty good recruiter, though his best recruiting days may be over.  Hopefully.

Let's be honest, we're more upset about where he's going than the fact that he's going.

If he went to the Big 12, we'd all be like "Yeah, probably a pretty good move if he wants to keep coaching and doesn't actually want to retire."

Honestly, I would think that Ohio State could do better for DC, versus just an assistant position.  They could get just about anybody they wanted.

Ohio State fans are not super excited about this.  They view it as another Sciano-type move, in an area where they have actually showed some weakness.

The man is also 69 years old..... He doesn't have a lot of coaching years left. It is a chance he gets to have that apparently he's been wanting since Hoke. Best of luck Coach Mattison, sucks to see you leave but I at least understand your reasoning
