OT: Happy Festivus 2018!

Submitted by Michigan Arrogance on December 23rd, 2018 at 6:15 AM

I got a lot of problems with you people!

Here are my plans for the day:

  • raising of the Festivus Pole this morning
  • Donation to the Human Fund*
  • Traditional Festivus dinner: leftover meatloaf
  • My personal favorite part of Festivus: The Airing of Grievances
  • Finally, the Feats of Strength - this year perhaps a one arm push up contest as there is no snow to shovel.

Have a Happy Festivus for the rest of us!

The biggest losers of the Rutgers/MD in the Big Ten situation are...Rutgers and Maryland.

I work with a ton of Maryland fans and none of them like being in the Big Ten. They have little chance of winning the conference in football or even basketball. And then they're no longer playing the teams that mean something to them. Playing Duke, Virginia and UNC in hoops means a ton more to them than playing Michigan, PSU or OSU in football. When I talk about Michigan with them, you'd never know we were in the same division in the same conference. They look at it like a random Pac-12 school's fan would.

Airing of grievances -

a) The trendy term of "meaningless bowl game."  Aren't all bowl games meaningless (and mostly by design)?  Sure, there have been a few that designated the national champion but in the grand scheme of life and sports, every game is just another contest in our relatively short lives.  Few people (not visitors to this blog) can name the winner or MVP in the championship bowl four years ago.  I don't recall anyone skipping the Music City Bowl or the Outback Bowl in previous years.  Every contest and every bowl game is meaningful or you don't understand people, life, and/or even free market economics.

b) expanding the playoff will NOT  decrease number of players sitting out the bowls.  Many of these players have been playing with an injury, have already graduated if they haven't already left school, and have a choice to skip three weeks of grueling practice where athletes frequently get injured, hours of film study for one opponent (perhaps for the 61st time) or have have an opportunity to spend more time with their friends and family over the holidays.

I think most people enjoy the contest and the comaraderie and would always choose to play but the day will come when a sure first rounder will skip the playoffs rather than play with an injury that can be made worse.  (Yes, I  could play but I don't think the shoulder can take one more hit this year.)

I'll start with the members of this community who have been with us for all of five minutes but post like they have been here for 10 years.  Well that's it, I think someone is on my lawn.  Happy Festivus.
