MGoBoard poll: How many of you follow Michigan Hockey?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on December 6th, 2018 at 2:57 PM

I'd like to get as many responses as I can. I'm going to be writing a piece on Michigan Hockey's popularity and where it is in 2018.

I remember the days where MGoBlog would crash during the tournament games in the early 2010s.

Simple question. Do you follow Michigan Hockey like you do Football & Basketball?

I graduated in '93, so it's always been on my radar.

With the new coach, I watched some tournament games last year, caught some games on tv this year and went to my FIRST game at Yost a couple of Friday's ago for the overtime win against Wisconsin.

I will be watching more closely going forward.

Only time I watch online or BTN is during the tournament or if it is a national game like UofM vs. MSU in the big house.  This has been consistent over the years

No

But when I was at Michigan I enjoyed going to Hockey games more than any other sport besides football.  I will catch a game here and there, and watch the playoffs...but not invested like I used to be.

Yes I follow. I don’t go to as many games as I use to due to a Special K wanna be ruining one of the finest college hockey venue’s atmosphere.

I follow best I can with virtually no games televised. Mix of radio broadcast and the resident MGoBlog “tracker” (thanks I Bleed Maize & Blue!!)

The good old days when Michigan hockey seemed bigger and more popular -- say 1995-2010 -- were largely a product of the basketball team's nadir.  Few students have the time to have season tickets to two winter sports, even when the games don't directly conflict.  Still fewer alumni have the time or energy to follow two winter sports from afar.

When I began undergrad in the late Amaker/early Beilein era it was the number two sport on campus, but it was obviously never going to remain that once basketball started being a regular contender.

Yes.  Maybe not quite to the level of football and basketball, but close.  Try to get to a game or two at Yost every year and used to go to the GLI often when it was at the Joe.  Follow the Michigan Hockey account on Twitter to keep tabs on games when not on TV.  Haven’t shelled out to watch a game on BTN+ or anything.

I do a bit.  I also watch the games if they are in the Frozen Four.

For me, favorite sports are Michigan football, followed by Michigan basketball, followed by Michigan hockey, and then a distant fourth of every other sport, pro and college.

Yes, though it is easier later in the season when more games are on TV or outcomes seem Moreno critical, and probably more difficult when basketball is better in general just due to time / mental capacity available. I got a BTN+ subscription specifically for hockey but don’t use it as much as I thought I would mostly since the quality is unreliable.

I was a season ticket holder in school and happened to have front row seats / man the cowbell sometimes so probably not the norm.

This story goes way past the 2010s. MGoBlog crashing for hockey games? Did that ever really happen?

We got our season tickets in 1994-5, IIRC. We gave them up this season because it was just too much with the ways the schedule has changed. I'm not sure what you want for your story, but my impression has always been that the hockey fanbase is a specific subset that overlaps with football, and to a much lesser degree basketball, but yet remains relatively unique. Hockey people are a breed of their own. It's just about strong enough to sell out Yost for a big weekend, and that's just about it. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Student support ebbs and flows, but hockey tickets have always been too expensive, and it seems to me the formalization of the student section into this stupid "Children of Yost" thing hasn't helped anything in the least. Student support at Yost is sad. Sorry if that's too much of a hot take, but it's just that. Sad. Students these days just dont't get it.

Because of the fact that this basketball team might be my favorite team ever, it is a not as much right now, but generally speaking hockey is my second sport.

Short Answer: Yes.

No, I don't pay attention to the hockey team or program at all. I'm also a fan who cares equally about basketball and football. I attend homes games for both  those sports regularly.

I attend games at Yost once once every few years, usually at the suggestion of others + free tickets.

Honestly, it has everything to do with the sport of hockey.  I just don't care for the sport.. it's the whole ice, skates, sticks thing.

I'm a football, basketball, soccer person as far as team sports. Hockey is just not for me.
