Ohio State Presser: Urban Just Looks Pissed

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on December 4th, 2018 at 2:16 PM

He spoke for about 15 seconds. I don't think he thanked anyone besides "Buckeye Nation." Looked very pissed. Gene Smith talked more about Shelley than about Urban.

It seems like the tone got a little lighter as they got deeper into the presser, at least from the bits I was able to listen to, but it also seems to me that, from Urban's demeanor, clearly aspects of this day weren't his idea. I could be wrong, but he did seem disgruntled.

I'm sorry, but this just isn't true. He thanked Gene Smith, his staff, and all his players. Hell he even thanked the Ohio HS coaches. I thought he looked relaxed and he joked about everyone being there for his grandsons second birthday. Not really a big deal, but let's at least be truthful.

Said his sideline antics all season were a long con and I stand by that. He isn’t sick. He has no health issues. I think he was pissed that the OSU administration didn’t back him 100% and suspended him for three games. It would make sense that this scenario of him retiring was agreed upon before he returned from his suspension. I don’t think Day will be a drop off and the machine will keep rolling at OSU. But holy hell, the pressure is now squarely on Harbaugh to beat OSU next season. He is out of time and out of excuses. If he goes 0-5 I think he is gone.

So,  Urban covers up the Zach Smith thing and OSU doesn't want to be known as a school where every coach goes down in scandal.  They agree to brush aside the scandal with the suspension,  have Meyer fake/ exaggerate  his medical condition so that he can "retire" at the end of the year and have Ryan Day is coach in waiting.   Some idiot leaks that Day is the coach in waiting, essentially blowing the plan and the AD has to deny it.  Meyer's heart isn't in it all year so they play like shit against most opponents but can turn it on when they need to win.  Except they get pantsed by Purdue, who plays out of their mind.  Meyer's heart is still in it for the Michigan game as it will be his last and they catch us by surprise.

Meyer will spend a year or two doing nothing, get miraculously better and will come back to coach Notre Dame if Brian Kelley goes to the NFL.

Urban Meyer is a gross human being.

Man how time flies.  Seems like just yesterday when Meyer was working for ESPN and interviewing Brady Hoke back in 11.  Its hard to believe that he has been HC at OSU for 7 years until now.

There will be a drop off with Ryan Day.  Coaches like Meyer are hypomaniacs and operate at an insane level to achieve their excellent on field records.

As an OSU fan, I'm focused on 2 facts, 1 personal reaction, and 1 opinion:

Fact 1: Meyer was one of the best coaches of this generation;

Personal Reaction: I was deeply disappointed by his apology, as it indicated that he truly didn't get why his response (or lack thereof) was morally wrong. (Side note: I did my grad work at Penn State and still live in State College but I'm not a fan of PSU football. I've been gob-smacked by some fans' willingness to believe either that Paterno didn't know or that his punishment was too harsh. Meyer's behavior wasn't to the level of 2 decades of covering child molestation, but it still reflects a willingness to subvert moral imperatives in the interest of football.)

Fact 2: Arachnoid cysts, like most neurological conditions, are exacerbated by stress. I'm a psychologist, not a physician, but I work with several people who are dealing with brain injuries or tumors; 7 years ago, I did in fact work with someone who had this particular type of cyst.

Opinion: Meyer is deeply attached to Ohio State. 1 daughter lives in a suburb of Columbus, and his son just started playing baseball for the University of Cincinnati. He also has grandkids now, which he didn't when he left Florida. I don't know if his competitive drive will let him stay retired, but he's going to be involved in OSU athletics in an administrative capacity so he'll still get his Buckeye fix. I don't know what, if any, further information will emerge about his departure. I'm certainly not on the inside. My personal reaction and/or my opinion will change accordingly. (Odd coincidence: Meyer's initials are UM.)

Mostly, I wanted to say thanks to those of you here who may hate the person but don't wish him physical illness; ditto the person who didn't agree with the request to break both of Haskins' legs if he stayed in the game. I felt similar gratitude to Devin Gardner after Barrett was hurt in '13, and Gardner went over to offer support.

Good luck in the Peach Bowl. I know it's not the one you wanted (and I would have loved a UM/LSU match-up) but I do believe bowl games can be excellent springboards for the following season.

Just watched it; didn't seem pissed at all. Relatively composed, delivered his lines with a fair amount of fluidity and grace. Dislike the guy but I don't see what you're saying.

IF this was planned/agreed to by the U before the season (as many seem to say) I have to say it's a lose/lose for the university.  They got a PR black eye (pun intended) in order to keep their great coach and now they don't have their great coach.
