Actually, the problem was, they used hydrogen. It was the Hindenburg that led to the requirement that helium be used for lighter-than-air travel instead. (Hydrogen is much easier to produce).

The Nazis would've used helium if they could have gotten ahold of any. But the US had a global monopoly on helium at that time and prohibited sale of the gas to Nazi Germany. Because of its use in airships and for any other possible military applications.
