Does Rashan Gary play again or make the business decision like Nick Bosa?

Other Michigan friends/fans and I discussed this last night. I personally think he is done but what do I know.

Talk amongst yourselves.

There is no question that he was really hurt.  If I was staring down the barrel of a Million Dollar payday and was nursing a very painful injury playing against 300 lb hammering pandas, I would make sure I was 100% healthy before returning. I would not judge Rashan for one second. Not one. He is a warrior. If he never plays another down for M I will forever be thankful he picked Michigan when we really needed him. He is nothing like Bosa, NOTHING!

Seems like this is similar to what's going on with Ziggy Ansah.  This article pertains to Ziggy, but should give us some insight regarding what Rashan is going through: https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nfl/lions/2018/10/19/ziggy-ansah-injury/1698532002/

Reading between the lines, it seems like the shoulder won't get worse from playing but it is extremely painful and, therefore, limiting.  I hope that he is able to recover sometime during this season.  In a perfect world, we see Rashan at full strength.  Otherwise, our guys are filling in admirably and will only improve.

Get healthy Rashan!  Regardless of when he suits up again, he is a Michigan Man, a warrior, and a great representative of the university.  Anyone suggesting otherwise needs a timeout to reflect on what they are saying.

Why post this? Why do YOU need to know before it's announced? Why assume and produce rumors, or give the forum for people to pretend they have sources and comment on it.

The only thing that can come out of this discussion is hurting Rashan Gary's feelings and/or reputation. Why should we do that to (arguably) our best player?

People should keep in mind: players, coaches, parents, and recruits all read this blog.  If you truly support the team, be a supporter.

We're gonna believe in each other, we're not gonna criticize each other, we're not gonna talk about each other, we're gonna encourage each other. And when we play as a team, when the old season is over, you and I know, it's gonna be Michigan again, Michigan.

Lord, when will this topic go away?  It's been discussed in many threads with the same result.  We won't know for sure until either we see him play again or some kind of official announcement is made.  Until then, give the guy the benefit of the doubt.  He certainly deserves it.

Unlike Bosa, Gary will not be the #1 pick or even a top 5 if he doesn't play again IMO.

Still, that's a lot of money to be left on the table if he were to get hurt. On the plus side, our defense is fine without him but they're scary better with him!

I'd love to see him play if he can. If he can't or chooses not to, I would not criticize at all. He's been an impressive young man and a terrific representative of the school.

Everybody's worried about Rashan shutting it down - I'm worried that he isn't. If this is going to be a nagging thing that's a constant game time decision, wouldn't he be better off just getting surgery and a head start on rehab? In that case the problem is that he's too stubborn, trying too hard to play hurt to get back on the field, when the best choice might be to admit this is a lost year for him and bite the bullet to get it fixed permanently.

I don't think he should play unless he is 90-100%, and I would totally be behind him if he just shut it down for the season.  However, I don't really think he came here to just train him for the NFL.  Will he, or won't he?  As a Michigan fan since before this guy was even born I'm happy for him, and good with whatever he chooses to do.  Hope he gets drafted in the 1st round and makes a big boat load of money.

Ok I'll just come out and say it: am I the only one that feels like the Defense is actually more explosive without him? Personally I feel he is a DT anyway, but there's no doubt the pass rush, and DEs especially, have been better at closing the deal on plays. Unless Uche and Paye are just THAT good, which is possible, I feel like their closing speed on the edge has been better for us. Gary always seemed to get SO close to making a TFL/Sack, just to be a hair late most times. That being said, I love Gary and wouldn't blame him one bit if he was "pulling a Bosa". (Also, I understand his value against the run but to be fair, the D has held up just fine in that area as well)

I hope Gary values his teammates more than Bosa does and doesn’t look at his Michigan football experience as nothing more than simply preparation for making money in the NFL, but even if he is done for the season, I don’t think it matters that much. He’s done a fine job on the field, but he’s never been the dominating player everyone expected him to be. The defense has been at least as good without him and maybe even better. Uche and Paye have provided more QB pressure than Gary ever has. It would be great if he returns, because you can’t have too many good players, but hardly fatal if he doesn’t.

Heal up, Rashan!

I'm sure the team "got his back" no matter what he needs to do.

I also suggest shut it down and come back next year strong with an insurance policy in the back pocket. I think everyone will be fine if he just comes in on obvious passing downs.

"He's made progress. He practiced last week, but didn't feel like he could play in the game," Harbaugh said. "We get to travel 74 guys. We take the 74 who are in uniform and could potentially play in the game."

When asked if Gary could potentially sit out the rest of the season, Harbaugh was blunt and short.

"I don't know," he said.

He was then asked again if it was the coaching staff's call or the trainer's decision to sit Gary.

"Rashan decided that he wouldn't be able to play in Saturday's game," Harbaugh said curtly.

sounds like coach ain't happy about it (just reading between lines)

That very much sounds like he was cleared but there is some strife with Gary's handlers and UM. Rumors (and yes...rumors...this is a message board where we speculate and pontificate on rumors) suggest Gary's "handlers" want him to shut it down. Has anyone verified if that is true? Or maybe we just won't know.

From JH's responses it sounds like he'd rather have Gary just piss or get off the pot. That seems fair. I'd 100% support him sitting out and getting ready for the NFL but it's time to just make a decision if he is medically cleared to play. No shame if that decision is to "peace out" and get ready for your career.

99% sure he’s done. Handlers want him done.

Coaches trying to get him to play.

Harbaugh seemed testy because he doesnt know what rashan will do and who he will eventually listen to.

If his mom  says to not play he won’t play.  Haven’t heard how she is weighing in.

This isn’t hard to decipher... Jim Harbaugh is openly emphasizing that Rashan Gary made the decision to not play. For a guy that chooses his words more carefully than any coach in the game, it’s no accident that he’s chosen to reveal as much.

Additionally, you’re out of your mind if you think the head coach of a major college football team is going to tell the biggest recruit in school history ‘oh sorry, there’s no more room on the travel bus’ because he hurt his shoulder (same as you wouldn’t make the face of the team sit in the press box during a bowl game if everything were on the level).

So enough with the slappy nonsense, Gary is out. Uche is in. Rock and roll, the defense looks better anyway. Stop putting dude on a pedestal, he hasn’t been worth half the hype.

Agree...but it's also time Gary puts his big boy pants on and makes a decision and rolls with it. I'm not debating it is probably a tough decision but life is full of tough decisions but it helps everyone if he makes a firm decision...either way.

It's not hard to decipher. Gary is still recovering from a type of injury that can usually be played through with a lot of pain, read: not played at full potential, but which takes time off to heal. You have no idea if he's "out", and if you are throwing a dedicated and top rated Michigan player off the hype train simply because he has taken a few weeks off to heal, you aren't a real Michigan man.

I deeply appreciate the nature of the mainstream Michigan fanbase to let injury issues play themselves out without passing any type of judgement on the injured player.

I think Rashan starts against PSU if he’s close to 100%, and if he remains healthy plays the rest of the season with fewer reps until osu. If he’s close to 100% he plays in January as well.

I’m sure there are a lot of people in his ear about saving it for the NFL, however, listening to just one interview with Rashan will tell you how important it is for him to be out there right now on the field with his brothers.

There are at least a few things we do know:

-- Gary is not Bosa.

-- Gary has demonstrated character and leadership on and off the field.

-- Gary's mom is a quality person who will give him good advice.

-- Gary was actually injured, has been battling back from that, and has been practicing with the team.

-- Only a limited number of players can travel to an away game, meaning that if he could not play his presence on the sideline might deny someone else's opportunity to play, possibly at the detriment of the team.

-- Draftable college football players are sometimes faced with very difficult decisions notwithstanding their love of their school and what we as fans might want. Teams that recruit five-star players know that going in.

IMO, Gary has earned our respect and the space to do whatever he needs to do here.
