Thoughts on Michigan's first-ever on-field celebration with the Paul Bunyan Trophy?
Yesterday's game was the first time in recorded history that Michigan celebrated with the Paul Bunyan Trophy on the field.
Its history is an interesting one.
The trophy was something we wanted no part of at first. Crisler wouldn't have let us accept it if we won the first game for it in 1953. When we did win in 1954 and 1955, it was stuffed in a locker room closet and we didn't bother to record the scores on it. When MSU won it back in 1956, they engraved their own losing scores to keep the trophy going. Bo thought very little of the trophy and didn't engrave the scores in the 70s when on the 9 game win streak over MSU and our equipment staff didn't know where it was when MSU won it in 1978 in Ann Arbor.
I think it's great that we're embracing it. Especially after those assholes started parading around and brought it over to taunt our student section in 2015.
Welcome BACK home, Paul Bunyan!

I'm all for it Fight Fire With Fire. Enough of this Michigan difference crap go out there beat somebody's ass and let them know you beat their ass.

Agreed. I don't want the golf claps of a dignified 1976 24-14 win.
I want straight killers who want bust everyone's ass, tell you they just busted your ass, and then holler at your momma in the stands.
Give me Michigan Men off the field, but between the white lines I want straight thugs who don't care if you get up off the turf for the next play.

"I don't want the golf claps of a dignified 1976 24-14 win."
I was in the stands for the 42-10 asswhupping we put on Sparty that day in 1976, and there was no goddamn golf clapping where I was sitting.
As for the trophy, I don't have any issues with the team hoisting the Brown Jug after a victory over the Gophers, and I don't have any problem with them hoisting Paul Bunyan either.

This post is... problematic.

Eh, get fucked, how’s that for problematic?

Got to give those fucks a taste of their own medicine. Next year we can march down the field during msu warm up time.
October 21st, 2018 at 10:29 PM ^
No need. Just kick their ass and troll them again.

Ugly trophy, but if Sparty's gonna make it a thing... I guess it's a thing.

Due to dumb size restrictions, I’ll post the link. It was...

I think it's funnier that we didn't care because we won so much.
Lets go back to that.

No, I like the shove it right in their face thing a lot better to be honest. Thats what they wanted to start so we'll keep doing it. I'm not gonna pretend to not care about this game, not after the last decade. It's an important game, and don't tell me it means less for us.
October 21st, 2018 at 10:29 PM ^
They're going to continue to act like dirt, and they're going to continue to think of themselves as dirt compared to us, so we might as well embrace it and treat them like dirt too. They're going to continue to say we disrespect them whether we do or not, so we might as well disrespect them.
Stomp on their logo.
Call them Little Brother.
Talk trash.
Don't start any fights, but if fights start, finish them.
Win and celebrate on their field.
Then, in 20 years, don't hire them.

Happy it’s home, but I hope it’s misplaced and irrelevant again in 9 years.

I have watched Michigan football religiously since 1978. I had never seen the PB trophy until the 2008 game when Sparty paraded it around.
October 21st, 2018 at 10:43 PM ^
I grew up in Michigan. UM/MSU was obviously an important game every year but I didn't know the PB Trophy was even a thing until the mid-2000s.
Now it is a thing --- which is fine but it still seems weird.
I also thought Paul Bunyan was more associated with Minnesota anyway. There's the Paul Bunyan statue in Brainerd, that also shows up in the Fargo movie.

Desmond Howard said he didn't know it existed during his playing days. Sat in a closet

Milton must have changed his number from 5 to 3.
He wore 5 last week vs Wisconsin but according to the roster, he is #3. That's definitely not Rashan's helmet at the bottom of the picture because he didn't travel with the team.
Not that it matters, but does anyone know why his number changed?
October 21st, 2018 at 10:43 PM ^
So he and Wangler can both be out there.
October 21st, 2018 at 10:45 PM ^
That makes sense, thank you.
Also, excellent job on the highlight video. The first minute was awesome.
October 21st, 2018 at 10:47 PM ^
I was shocked when I saw the players parading it around on TV because that's never done. But....I kind of like it. Especially if it pissed Sparty off. Dantonio is such a dickhead that I welcomed the sight.
But I also echo others that I want it to go back to us winning it so much that we hardly care about it.
There is really only one season trophy game in college football and it's the little brown jug. Great story, part of an actual game. It inspired endless lame ass copycat trophies that centered on fairy tales and random objects that are embarrassing, frankly.

Except for the Bits O Broken Chair trophy. That thing is amazing.

Behold the glorious Cy-Hawk Trophy

I think it’s fun to see the players on the field with the trophy and when you couple it with Blaha’s butthurt call about our players running on the field like they just won the national championship, just the state championship, George, I love the idea that Spartan fans have to see it happen. And fuck George Blaha.
October 21st, 2018 at 10:48 PM ^
Did it piss MSU off? If so, I'm in favor.
October 21st, 2018 at 10:56 PM ^
That school and everyone in and around it has the least self-awareness of any large group of people I know.
October 21st, 2018 at 11:17 PM ^
I thought it was great. Staee shouldn’t be pissed off because they made a point of celebrating with it at Michigan Stadium. Michigan needs to be focused on this game every season and if making the trophy a big part of the celebration helps then I am all for it.
October 21st, 2018 at 11:27 PM ^
I think the rivalry turned personal when sparty made it personal. They played up the so-called disrespekt to such a high degree, even a Michigan head coach apologized for it. Don't say or do anything that might end up on the locker room wall.Treat this game like any other game on the schedule. This Wolverine team said no. We are making no apologies. We take this game personally. We kicked your ass and we are proud of it.
Go Blue.

Never seen our guys celebrate with such venom.
Visceral hate that which they really brought on themselves.
October 22nd, 2018 at 6:34 AM ^
It's a trophy, do whatever you want with it. Keep it in a closet? Fine. Parade it around? Also fine.
October 22nd, 2018 at 7:43 AM ^
I loved it. I remember hearing Big Jon talk two years ago about how it's a "locker room" trophy and I said F that after last season. MSU brings it out on the field and celebrates like they just won the Super Bowl. It's about time we went out there and did the same.

Love it, swagger is back with the program...won’t back down
