Thoughts on Michigan's first-ever on-field celebration with the Paul Bunyan Trophy?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on October 21st, 2018 at 10:22 PM

Yesterday's game was the first time in recorded history that Michigan celebrated with the Paul Bunyan Trophy on the field.

Its history is an interesting one.

The trophy was something we wanted no part of at first. Crisler wouldn't have let us accept it if we won the first game for it in 1953. When we did win in 1954 and 1955, it was stuffed in a locker room closet and we didn't bother to record the scores on it. When MSU won it back in 1956, they engraved their own losing scores to keep the trophy going. Bo thought very little of the trophy and didn't engrave the scores in the 70s when on the 9 game win streak over MSU and our equipment staff didn't know where it was when MSU won it in 1978 in Ann Arbor.

I think it's great that we're embracing it. Especially after those assholes started parading around and brought it over to taunt our student section in 2015.

Welcome BACK home, Paul Bunyan!

Agreed. I don't want the golf claps of a dignified 1976 24-14 win.

I want straight killers who want bust everyone's ass, tell you they just busted your ass, and then holler at your momma in the stands.

Give me Michigan Men off the field, but between the white lines I want straight thugs who don't care if you get up off the turf for the next play.

"I don't want the golf claps of a dignified 1976 24-14 win."

I was in the stands for the 42-10 asswhupping we put on Sparty that day in 1976, and there was no goddamn golf clapping where I was sitting.

As for the trophy, I don't have any issues with the team hoisting the Brown Jug after a victory over the Gophers, and I don't have any problem with them hoisting Paul Bunyan either.

They're going to continue to act like dirt, and they're going to continue to think of themselves as dirt compared to us, so we might as well embrace it and treat them like dirt too. They're going to continue to say we disrespect them whether we do or not, so we might as well disrespect them.

Stomp on their logo.

Call them Little Brother.

Talk trash.

Don't start any fights, but if fights start, finish them.

Win and celebrate on their field.

Then, in 20 years, don't hire them.

I grew up in Michigan.  UM/MSU was obviously an important game every year but I didn't know the PB Trophy was even a thing until the mid-2000s.

Now it is a thing --- which is fine but it still seems weird.

I also thought Paul Bunyan was more associated with Minnesota anyway.  There's the Paul Bunyan statue in Brainerd, that also shows up in the Fargo movie.

I was shocked when I saw the players parading it around on TV because that's never done.  But....I kind of like it.  Especially if it pissed Sparty off.  Dantonio is such a dickhead that I welcomed the sight.

But I also echo others that I want it to go back to us winning it so much that we hardly care about it.

There is really only one season trophy game in college football and it's the little brown jug.  Great story, part of an actual game.  It inspired endless lame ass copycat trophies that centered on fairy tales and random objects that are embarrassing, frankly.

I think it’s fun to see the players on the field with the trophy and when you couple it with Blaha’s butthurt call about our players running on the field like they just won the national championship, just the state championship, George, I love the idea that Spartan fans have to see it happen.  And fuck George Blaha.

I thought it was great. Staee shouldn’t be pissed off because they made a point of celebrating with it at Michigan Stadium. Michigan needs to be focused on this game every season and if making the trophy a big part of the celebration helps then I am all for it.

I think the rivalry turned personal when sparty made it personal. They played up the so-called disrespekt to such a high degree, even a Michigan head coach apologized for it. Don't say or do anything that might end up on the locker room wall.Treat this game like any other game on the schedule. This Wolverine team said no. We are making no apologies. We take this game personally. We kicked your ass and we are proud of it.

Go Blue.

Never seen our guys celebrate with such venom.

Visceral hate that which they really brought on themselves.

I loved it. I remember hearing Big Jon talk two years ago about how it's a "locker room" trophy and I said F that after last season. MSU brings it out on the field and celebrates like they just won the Super Bowl. It's about time we went out there and did the same.
