Internet Sleuthing: Rashan Gary's Injury Status
I was perusing The Victors Club board over at 247 and saw some discussion on Tarik Black's injury. In the discussion thread umbig11 chimed in with this:
Which of course is good news in regards to Black, but the additional news about Gary is very concerning. Another poster responded to him and this was umbig11's response back:
Not good, Bob. There was an additional thread on the board about Gary being shut down for the year ala Bosa and umbig11 chimed in yet again with this:
So at the very least, it seems Gary won't be back this week :( and is possibly considering shutting it down for the season... Why can't we has nice things?
Hopefully, I am not breaking MGoRules by posting these screenshots from a paywalled thread. I figured umbig11 posts inside info here regularly and he doesn't work for 247, so fair game?

There is no "bargain" and there is no "contract." NCAA rules state explicitly that a scholarship is not given in exchange for a player's labor, and that the player is playing for the love of the game only.
October 17th, 2018 at 5:17 PM ^
This take is unfairly speculative. We don’t know that Rashan has been medically cleared to play and is choosing not to. Bosa’s recovery date is mid December, so all he would be able to return for is a bowl game or the playoffs.
October 17th, 2018 at 6:31 PM ^
When you insist that the players need to be much more closely policed and disciplined than they already are, you reveal a lot about yourself.
October 17th, 2018 at 11:17 PM ^
No different than NFL players holding out for a contract. They’ve got one shot for life changing money, if they’re lucky. Don’t hate, congratulate.
October 17th, 2018 at 6:25 PM ^
I’ve been very impressed with Uche too, a heathy Uche might be better than a dinged up Gary
October 17th, 2018 at 7:34 PM ^
Except probably not.
Gary is a run-crushing SDE. Uche is a DE/LB tweener with suspect coverage skills. Their roles are completely different.
October 17th, 2018 at 10:29 PM ^
If Uche is on the field more because Gary is out then I still think a healthy Uche is better than a banged up Gary.

Once again I have gone years and my AC joint hasnt recovered. PT did nothing. Surgery isnt an option. Cortisone helps for a time.
October 17th, 2018 at 4:58 PM ^
Yep, and the tears and scarring lead to inflammation and arthritis. Does not help when you sleep on your side at night.
October 17th, 2018 at 5:03 PM ^
omg i have bad shoulders and I swear this is the reason why. I'll wake up in the middle of the night and I can't move my arm.
October 17th, 2018 at 9:03 PM ^
Same here. My wife found a sweet pillow made for this. Really helped my shoulder pain at night.
A bit expensive but worth it. Remember to use the philanthropy link for mgoblog if you get it from Amazon.
October 17th, 2018 at 4:58 PM ^
Why is surgery not an option?!
October 17th, 2018 at 6:09 PM ^
The AC joint is where the clavicle meets the shoulder blade. Its not a joint in the same way that a knee or elbow is a joint. There is connective tissue between the two bones. I actually broke my clavicle at the AC joint and tore the connective tissue between the bones. Another injury in this area is a separated shoulder. I am unclear whether that is surgical but my injury was not.
October 17th, 2018 at 7:40 PM ^
Its not a joint in the same way that a knee or elbow is a joint.
This. The AC joint is a complex pivot point between the clavicle and scapula and to my knowledge, there's no reliable way to surgically repair it without a high degree of risk of complications (tendon grafts) or severely limiting ROM in the affected joint (screws, plates.)
But I'm not an orthopod so TIFWIW.
October 17th, 2018 at 9:31 PM ^
You made me just realize I probably had an AC joint injury last year. Lingered for 6 months or more. Doctors just gave me ibuprofen and that was that - I don't think mine was too serious, just an annoyance.
October 17th, 2018 at 11:28 PM ^
Sounds like a really painful injury. Hope the guy is okay.
October 17th, 2018 at 4:46 PM ^
He only posted it there because it was the behind the paywall. Not good to take screenshots from there. Also not good about Gary but I got nervous about that when he didn't dress last week since it was obviously worse than we originally thought.
October 17th, 2018 at 4:52 PM ^
I get that he posted behind a paywall, but I pay for the content that 247 insiders provide, not what other users provide.
If this was wrong of me, I apologize to umbig11 and hopefully, the moms take this down.
October 17th, 2018 at 4:47 PM ^
If Gary is done for the year, and hoping his injury is not career-threatening. The first question that comes up for me is does he go pro.
October 17th, 2018 at 4:47 PM ^
lol okay.
Kwity Paye has done a great job since he's been out.
October 17th, 2018 at 4:54 PM ^
What is lol worthy about that?
October 19th, 2018 at 12:13 PM ^
Because people wanna concern troll when in reality we haven't missed a beat without Gary.
Great credit to the DL unit and the coaches.
October 17th, 2018 at 4:56 PM ^
This is true, but it certainly doesn't mean we don't need Gary.
October 17th, 2018 at 5:04 PM ^
Paye does not require a double or sometimes triple team like a healthy Gary does. It changes the whole scheme Don Brown has to use. Did you not see the push Wisconsin was getting running the ball? Thankfully they were dumb enough to throw so much.
October 17th, 2018 at 5:57 PM ^
DTs were the issue, not DEs.

It's not nearly as bad as losing a starting QB. Gary was a very good player, but if we're being honest, he's probably the 4th best player on the defense right now. He's terrific, but Winovich, Bush and David Long have all played better. And please don't use the "double or triple teamed" excuse, because while he did draw extra attention, he's not consistently getting that. If he did, our defense would be significantly better.
October 17th, 2018 at 7:55 PM ^
Very simplistic. You clearly don't understand the battle of the trenches and how that part of the game is schemed. Gary is very...important. you don't think he "consistently" gets double teamed?
October 17th, 2018 at 8:09 PM ^
I've played and coached offensive line in college. I very much understand the nuances of offensive and defensive line play. I think Rashan Gary is a very good football player, but saying he gets consistently double teamed is wrong. Sure sometimes teams will use a TE or RB to chip in Pass Pro,and he's a good run defender, but he's not a refined pass rusher and doesn't have the bend around the edge that great pass rushers have, which leads to most of his sacks being coverage sacks. He's probably played like a 2nd or 3rd team All Big Ten DL this year, which is very good, but he's not an irreplaceable cog to the defense.
October 17th, 2018 at 7:43 PM ^
That's a pretty simplistic way to think about it, but ignores the fact that Gary (when even close to healthy) requires a double team. That takes another guy away that would otherwise be working on our DT's (like Wisconsin did).
October 17th, 2018 at 5:19 PM ^
Check Chase Winovich's stats with Gary on the field versus Gary off the field. You'll notice a difference.
October 17th, 2018 at 5:22 PM ^
Same with Bush
October 17th, 2018 at 6:12 PM ^
lol create another account loser
October 17th, 2018 at 4:53 PM ^
Don't worry about the screen grabs because I can't read any of 'em.
October 17th, 2018 at 4:55 PM ^
you have to squint really hard
October 17th, 2018 at 5:01 PM ^
Take a better look at Don's avatar and then explain to us how he is going to be able to squint.

You use those two fingers and enlarge
October 17th, 2018 at 4:55 PM ^
It will be interesting to see where Gary gets drafted if he decides to sit out. Is he maybe the third DL taken behind Bosa and Ed Oliver? Maybe a Clemson or Alabama guy that I am missing?
October 17th, 2018 at 4:56 PM ^
yea a couple Clemson guys, 1 bama guy, ive seen gary mid to late first round actually past couple mocks which is probably accurate if he ends the season with a shoulder issue
October 17th, 2018 at 5:04 PM ^
With a current first round grade, there isn't any reason from his perspective to come back quickly and play at less than 100%. I don't think the Bosa route is going to be common, but the safe 1st round guys probably will handle things that way.
October 17th, 2018 at 6:37 PM ^
The differences in guaranteed money between high, mid, and low first rounders is pretty significant. Gary isn't a top 10 pick at this point so he has incentives to play if he's healthy.
October 17th, 2018 at 6:12 PM ^
Mid second round.
October 17th, 2018 at 11:33 PM ^
Worst case he will KILL it at the combine and move firmly into the mid-1st rd.
October 17th, 2018 at 7:28 PM ^
I think this is actually a deep year at DL. All of Clemson's potential early departures last year came back to school, and Clemson may have 3 DL who are potential 1st-round picks. It is hard to tell what order they come off the board until teams get a closer look at them at the NFL Combine.
October 17th, 2018 at 8:18 PM ^
It's a deep DL class. NFL are looking at him as a DT. I know some has him as the 7th best DL in the draft which speak to how deep it is. It's a great year to be looking for DL at both edge and DT positions. Gary will be drafted at 1st round because of his physical gifts. Ultimately, it'll be his medical evaluation that will determine where he'll be drafted so better hope that his shoulder is okay or he'll be a draft day fall.
October 17th, 2018 at 11:36 PM ^
Maybe with it being such a deep draft for D-line there is at least a possibility he comes back? If he’s healthy and productive next year he could easily be a top 10 pick. Hard to see that happening after this season.
October 17th, 2018 at 5:00 PM ^
Been hearing since before Wisconsin Gary has people whispering in his ear to put himself above the team. Harbaugh and Brown want him to play. I sure hope Gary returns. My guess is he returns for PSU, but if not by then likely done.
October 17th, 2018 at 5:06 PM ^
That might help explain Harbaugh's recent, terse, non-responses about injuries during pressers.
October 17th, 2018 at 5:30 PM ^
As opposed to when he would give answers with all sorts of details and timetables for return?
