This will be your thread for snowflakes and hot takes for the defense and defensive playcalling.

Defense got it done, just took their sweet time again getting there. D-line is improving well, that was some great pressure. Rotations are not far behind the starters IMO. Didn't see Hutchinson out there tonight any updates on him I might have missed??

Someone should tell our defense they can’t take the first quarter off in every road game. We will be down 14-0 to MSU and lose 14-10 again if that happens.

I think Gary may be a little banged up, but he is great at what the coaches ask him to do in this Defense. He’s also constantly doubled which makes life easier for the rest of the DL.

The press coverage with single high safety on 3rd and vey longs (I'm referring to the 3rd and 13 where the CB holding penalty gave NW the 1st down)...I hope that stops for good now.

NW didn't crack 50 yards in the second half, I believe.  They gave up some yards and got some bad breaks in that first quarter, but they absolutely earned their keep after that.  Plus, guys like Uche and Paye continued to emerge on the line.

The D really stepped up after that first 18 minutes. Uche, Paye and Dwumfour - great game.

Gotta clean up the PI and defensive holding. Those are drive extending penalties which will keep teams in games. I think Rashan's shoulder is limiting him. I agree that he is very good but has not yet taken it to the next level. Bush was quiet today - I think NW was making a concerted effort to get blockers on him so he couldn't disrupt with his speed.

The thing that bothers me about the uber-physical DB play is that it completely negates the advantage in athleticism that our players should have over receivers from a team like Northwestern. Just run with them and find the ball. Jesus Christ.

Realize this is the discussion of defense, but McKeon’s dropped pass allowed NW to maintain early offensive momentum. Last 42 minutes of the game NW offense did nothing. In particular, receivers on slant patterns started  to worry about their personal health.

My happiest moment of the game on defense was well into the second half when the linebackers destroyed receivers on short passes over the middle on consecutive plays. That was after  had said "fucking slant" something like 23 times before then.

Someone needs to tell Don Brown the first quarter counts.

We’re 5-0 and this game is a slow but comfy win if Q4 defense plays for Q1 in South Bend and Evanston.

I just can't understand how people don't understand, that when an offense comes in with 20 scripted plays that they have prepared for you for two weeks, it can be difficult to stop them. Once that initial burst happens, we adjust, and shut down everything. That's football.

Great in the second half, but the defense is going to have to put together complete games if they want to have an opportunity to win the big games on the schedule. And please get the PI and holdings in the secondary straightened out. Play the ball and use your athleticism, stop grabbing.
