Programs dominant in the 90's are now historically terrible

Seems rather fitting that with the matchup we have upcoming that I post this article from FiveThirtyEight. Mostly about the struggle of Nebraska and the Florida schools, but we do get a brief line: "Florida and Tennessee play on Saturday, while Nebraska will play Michigan — a fellow titan of college football history that, while not quite on the same historically bad trajectory as the teams above, also finds itself out of sorts over Jim Harbaugh's record against top opponents against top opponents"

I reckon some of that is because the 90s had a lot of historical blue bloods playing kinda ass-y didn't it? USC sucked, Notre Dame fell apart late in the decade, Ohio State was kinda shit for a lot of the 90s, Texas was outright crap until late in the decade when Mack Brown got there, Oklahoma was a disaster, Alabama was up and down and then got real crap at the end of the decade. Throw in strong 80s programs Georgia and Clemson completely collapsing and yeah, things were kinda open for programs like Nebraska, Florida and Tennessee and such to be dominant in a way that was probably unsustainable.

It's the lack of bagmen at these titans ... Alabama would be on that list post Bear Bryant but they said "if you can't beat$ them, then join$ them".
