Scandal News Watch Consolidated Thread for Monday 8/20/18

Submitted by jamesjosephharbaugh on

Since more rumors will inevitably start surfacing as we approach decision time, and there's potential for actual news to occur, here's a consolidated thread to post anything about the situation in Ohio, or Maryland, or students selling shoes, or whatever, hopefully to keep from cluttering up the board with every new screencap of twitter or bucknuts.

Nothing is happening today with Urban Meyer fiasco as the board isnt meeting until at earliest tomorrow to review the report. (They have not yet posted a time for the meeting and have indicated they will give 24 hour notice).

LOL there's already another thread on OSU.

I still think it's likely that Meyer is gone. I also think you could damn near bet your house on Durkin being canned.

Not that Maryland was some big threat, but let's say Durkin and Meyer are both let go just a handful of days before the season - does anyone else feel like things are crumbling very nicely for us to have a special year? Major scandals at OSU and Maryland causing one of the greatest coaches in modern CFB history to be ousted, Penn State loses most of their on-field talent and their best coaching talent, Wisconsin has lost starting DEs and WR this offseason. The only team without a major loss/scandal has been MSU, and they just reinstated a known racist to bolster LB depth. Meanwhile, Jim made seemingly great coaching moves in the offseason, and we return almost everyone from an incredibly young but talented team and add an elite QB prospect.

I'm getting too into feelingsball here, but I'm starting to get strong, positive vibes on top of what I think is a great team on paper.

All big ifs, Mantis. I'm on the other side of the coin where I think Meyer is coming back. This is a school that only got rid of Tressel because the NCAA forced it to. They were perfectly content with a liar running their program until he was slapped with a show-cause. I just don't think OSU will part ways with its golden goose unless it literally has no other choice. No one is forcing them to get rid of Meyer, and I doubt many donors have called in saying their donations are gone as long as Meyer is coach (in fact, I'd argue more donors say the donations stop if he's let go). But I'm a cynic so there you go.

Honestly, if our QB play improves even just slightly from where it was last year (which it should at a bare minimum), and if the OL play can improve and get to just being average (which is certainly possible because of Warriner's presence), there's no reason we can't win against anyone. Regardless of whether Meyer stays or not.

I can obviously see them retaining Meyer as well, just not what I would guess today if I were betting a dollar. As I recently told someone, "never overestimate Ohio".

And I agree with you - I think we have a lineup, assuming good health, that can beat every team on the schedule. Meyer is obviously not untouchable, as we've had him against the ropes in the last two years with what I think will prove to be inferior teams (2017 certainly) to the one we will put on the field in 2018.

The AC is out in my office. I think there are some people - people who think it's "too cold" - who may have disabled the AC intentionally. Can't prove it yet, so I'm just gonna get it fixed until the true rat reveals himself.

Just gonna throw in my two cents. Open threads for emerging news are not a good idea. I think it's better to have a new thread when news emerges. It's a pain in the arse to comb through these open threads for news.

Hate to break it to you but each scandal is going to get its own thread.  No way people are going to try to find the breaking news in an old thread discussing other things too.

I seriously doubt he's getting fired, but I want it so badly to happen. Not because it makes things easier for Harbaugh and Co. to win, but it's because that program and fanbase fully deserve to have a huge setback.

I think what infuriates me most about OSU is not them beating us so much over the last 15 years. Don't get me wrong, that does piss me off, but Michigan has often beaten itself in those games so Michigan often has only itself to blame in those games. No....what pisses me off the most about OSU is that any time it needs a break, it gets one. And it gets a BIG one. The stars seem to always align for OSU whenever they seem even somewhat cornered.

Even the bad shit that happens to them ultimately becomes the best thing that could happen to them. Tressel gets fired and Urban Meyer just somehow happens to be available fresh off a one-year sabbatical. They lose two starting QBs in one year and still win a national title. Got a huge break on that 4th and 1 call that would've completely changed the perception of the rivalry between Harbaugh and Meyer. They almost NEVER get a bad break. Spoiled rotten fanbase that has no idea how good it's really got it.

They need to be kicked off their perch and dragged through the mud. They need to taste mediocrity, see a less than full stadium, because literally every other school in America, save for maybe Oklahoma, has experienced extended periods of down time for their football program. They need to know what its like to go into a game against Minnesota and seriously contemplate if that's a game they're going to win.

From Albert Breer (OSU Alum) in today's MMQB on si.com

2. On Friday night, it seemed like the reporting on the Ohio State football situation took a turn from confronting a very serious issue to rubbernecking a really ugly divorce.

The longer it takes to have the meeting, the more likely it is that Meyer is going to resign.  They are probably done with report or at least have an executive summary done and -- if it looks like they found cause to fire him -- he will resign.  If he resigns, I believe the report does not have to be released and the Board does not meet.  He can save face rather than get terminated for cause.  I predict this and I predict that Meyer is the coach of LSU at this time next year.

Here's a fun one, probably won't be seen on this thread because it's buried.  But in the realm of "I don't know if this person is credible, but..."

This person on 11w says 1. Zach is a diagnosed sex addict, 2. on one bender he blew their entire down payment on a house on strippers and call girls, 3. OSU knew about the DUI and 4. OSU covered up the DUI because 5. OSU was "helping" Zach and Courtney, 6. Courtney met w/ Urban and Shelley about the abuse, 7. Urban said he'd fire Zach immediately if she showed them evidence of abuse, 8. She held back because she needed his income. 9. OSU also obviously knew about the affair, maybe the reassignment and keeping him on staff was part of them "helping" Zach.

If this is all true, this doesn't look good for Meyer.  "Helping" Zach by reassigning subordinates, covering up a DUI, handling the domestic stuff at the Meyer + Shelley level instead of outside the building...while they may spin it as a sex/alcohol addict who they were trying to help, also looks like enablement depending on your viewpoint.

Hey bros I’m at work so don’t have time to check this thread so I’m just going to drop this.

My buddy who is a member of a pay site sent me a screenshot of a post saying all the action for buckeyes has been frozen or odds have severely changed. You can infer what that might mean.

another fun drop from 11w:

one person making their first post says some boosters were floated a preliminary decision that urban got axed and they replied with stern threats to stop giving money.

another person says the strong consensus in the WHAC and from Urban's family is he expects to be reinstated with no punishment and wouldn't even accept a suspension for PR purposes.
