DL Stephon Herron flips his commitment to Stanford
What everyone feared has come to fruition per Brandon Brown:
Former #Michigan commit Stephen Herron has flipped to Stanford.
He kept saying "something would have to happen" for him to look around decommit. That was always sort of know to be "getting accepted to Stanford."
Honestly I think Michigan is an awesome school and great football team and has a super-powerful alumni base, but with all of the action and network of Silicon Valley, I'd go to Stanford too. Become a multimillionaire whether you get to the NFL or not.
Can Stanford football players get those mythical $100k internships at Google and Facebook without violating NCAA rules?
Yeah, that how it works:
1. Attend Stanford.
2. Dig that Silicon Valley action.
3. ?????
4. Become a millionaire
Unlike some others, I'm not going to wish Herron good luck. He lied to us. It may or may not be understandable or excusable, and I'm not saying he's necessarily a bad person, but I'm just not going to wish him well.
There's no position about which I'm more confident the staff can recruit and develop talent than DL. Next up?
Good reminder that early commitments should always be viewed skeptically— should probably be seen as leans or possibilities
Would guess that Michigan knew this would be a possibility and planned accordingly. Better that he did this now than in Feb.
Feels like the T. Battle situation....which is unfortunate.
I'm just glad he went and fucking did it already. He yanked the staff's chain long enough. Now they can safely recruit someone else for that spot.
Frankly anyone counting him as part of the class was going off of insane optimism. This has been coming for a long time.
Hard to fault a kid for going for the Stanford degree and given the composition of the class and the players still being recruited, it's hard to say that the coaches were really counting on him remaining in the class, so no harm no foul.
There is a thread on the Rivals board saying that Zach Harrison may delay his decision to after the season. From what I saw, it's written by someone who apparently has contact with the family and was speculative, but it says that he doesn't want to commit in August if he is not 100% sure of his decision (which he is not) and does not want any distractions for his senior season. Purely a rumor at this point but worth keeping an eye on.
As many have stated here, the longer Harrison delays his commitment, the more likely he is to go blue.
"the longer Harrison delays his commitment, the more likely he is to go blue."
Why? Do you have data to support that notion?
It is intuitively obvious. If he was going to stick with the "easy" choice he would go ahead and commit to OSU early-as he originally stated he would. Can you imagine the grief he would face this Fall if he "flipped" to Michigan now!!! I don't know if he would qualify for an early admission but if he does he can flip at the early signing, head off to Michigan and not even have to show his face back at his old HS. On the one hand I don't think this kid likes conflict and will avoid it at all costs but on the other he has the will to follow his heart. He's 17 for goodness sakes!
Otherwise, the Herron flip is pretty inconsequential...maybe even beneficial.
The best thing about this decommit is the timing. It's early enough that there are other options that aren't yoinking a 2 star from the MAC.
Good luck to the young man, except when/if playing Michigan.
The part that bothers me is that he is a highly ranked player who used Michigan for a buffer. Up until 10 years or so Michigan was always the ones who could get most players to flip etc: part of me is upset but the other part of me knew this was coming as did the staff at Michigan, hence the many other offers on defense that went out the last 2 months.
This trend is annoying as I feel like we are now considered the bridesmaid and not the bride for most Kids. We are the 2nd option for most elite kids and it’s showing w the kids who spurn us more and more.
All it would take is for Harbaught to win the B1G! Then we will be getting all the late firsts and there will be a lot of sad 2nds on LOI day!
Womp womp
What a surprise.
Well...bye...
Have to say based upon his Opening performance this is not a huge loss. His stars are too high and film from the Opening showed he is not near his composite rating. Good luck to him, seems like a nice young man.
Now it is up to Harbaugh to win his first B1G championship and make the playoffs. If he does we will not miss Herro
How long till we see 'Zach Harrison chooses Ohio St' so his name can finally be out of comments and posts?
Good luck to Herron. I thought Ojabo was a better prospect so I'm not losing any sleep over this.
This is just part of the grand destiny that results in Zach Harrison being a Wolverine.
A little late to this party (and most parties).... Anyone know what “philanthropic endeavors” refers to in his decommit tweet?
I can't blame him. He is probably going to be Stanford's highest rated recruit and immediate PT is probably in the cards. At Michigan the competition for PT on the DL is more intense and not guaranteed early on. Stanford has the edge in academics. Better weather there for sure. Not an insane decision.
I wish he didn’t flip but if there is one unit I have the most trust in for Michigan to recruit, it’s the D-line. So I’m not terribly concerned. With our depth we should easily survive this hit.

But can we easily survive the octuple posts?
