SORRY, SORRY, TRYING TO REDESIGN IT

Fine, we'll not do the geocities site for the rest of time. I hope you're happy with a background that does not include animated gifs and zero Victors midis in your life, you philistines.

Anyway, this is the New Site. There will inevitably be some hiccups as with any large complicated activity. Please feel free to email or comment about them and we'll look into it. Here is a bolded alter-ego discussion about it.

Why did it take so long?

We missed an aggressive date in August and then I didn't want to upset the apple cart during football season. Then bandwidth got extremely low for us, the MGoBlog half of the equation, with a weird spate of folks being very ill at the same time hockey and basketball went to their respective Final/Frozen Fours. We didn't really pick the project back up until April.

I thought the August date was going to be a miss because this was a bear of a migration from Drupal 6 to Drupal 8 for a site with millions of comments and hundreds of thousands of nodes, poorly maintained by a web coding dilettante (that would be me) and using various Drupal 6 alpha modules that never transitioned to 7, let alone 8. Some functionality was lost. (RIP hellbanning.)

So what are the bells and whistles?

Step one was attempting to replicate current features and port the site to 8. There isn't a ton of new functionality. The main new feature is a responsive design that will work on phones and tablets in addition to PCs. This means we don't need to have specialized apps anymore. The new site is also a long term platform that we can build new stuff into; features on the old site stopped happening because I was perpetually hoping to have a new site in the near future. Now diabolical plans can transpire.

One new thing: comment threads are collapsible, so when that guy who fights with that other guy starts fighting with that guy you can just click the collapse button and move on with your life.

So there are no apps?

The apps were just a mobile-friendly way to view the site and are currently discontinued. If we have functionality we want to add that requires an app they might come back.

I have a problem with this!

Yeah, if you click on "read more" it doesn't take you to where you left off. That is a known issue. Voting is also missing from some article types.

Where's the midi?

You'll have to ask HUEL… er, Human Element about that. Human Element develops websites, usually well and sometimes very very badly but on purpose.

On phone and tablet.  When clicking on the “person” outline on the upper right hand corner, is it supposed to do something other then change color.

good job everyone involved with the upgrade project.

I'm absolutely loving the new site! I still can't upvote or downvote; LSAClassof2000 posted on the "Death of Posbang?" thread that voting should still work on the main page, yet I don't see it on this thread. I suspect it's a minor issue to be dealt with. Clearly, I haven't been too concerned with my point totals to this point, so NBD. Thanks MGoGods!

Anyone else notice that http://mgoblog.com still takes you to the faux geocities site? Need the "www" in order to get to the updated site. Intentional? Will mgoblog.com eventually just point to www.mgoblog.com? For now, get your geocities fix in, while it lasts.

I had a solid 2 days of "WTF?!!" and cursing everyone who bitched about the old site. This is much better than whatever the last 2 days was.

Yesterday's site was fun!  I would have put on a 80's disco outfit to read it, but remembered we didn't have the Interwebz in the 80's.

Front page looks great.  Looking forward to digging through OP's today.  Thanks for helping fill my time at work today!

Was the Michigan Bar Locator intentionally put under the MGoBoard Tab to keep people from posting "Where to watch the game in XXX" posts?

A few other things, at least a couple of which have been posted already:

  • Changing the post count to 100 doesn't seem to do anything. 25 and 50 work, but not 100.
  • If you're on the main page, you can see the number of comments associated with each post. If you actually go into the post, you can no longer see the number of comments anywhere at the top. I liked that so I could just click the "xx comments" and jump straight to comments, instead of having to scroll down.
  • Need link to browse diaries. For now, can only see the most recently posted diaries.
  • Need a "my account" link somewhere at the top where it shows your username and posting options. It's a pain to have to click on your own name in a comment in order to get to it.

Couple minor bugs on mobile - clicking the profile icon on the top right doesn’t seem to do anything. When opening the internal links on the top left, there seems to be a bit of a hiccup when scrolling through those links (so it’s difficult to get to “where to eat in Ann Arbor.)

I wish I could see who posted a topic on the board. Am I missing this somewhere. UMBig11 made a post and didn’t know until I clicked???

Everything looks great though. I do however prefer using an app as opposed to mobile browser. Hopefully it will come in the future.

Well done, MGoTeam!

As a longtime bitcher/moaner of the old site and the delays in getting the new site up, I offer a hearty "THANK YOU" and virtual pat on the back.

Some minor glitches that have been noted below, but overall the new site looks and works great.  Congrats!

If this is waaay too much ask I understand, but when/if you guys do final tweaking to the new site (which looks great), what do you think about changing the downvote icon from blue to scarlet (or green)?

so you can only see a net total of combined up/down votes?  Not a separate upvote/down vote counter.  Interesting....are they keeping it this way?

The website on a computer looks great.

The website on my cell phone does not look so great.

I think an app is necessary, and I suspect the previous app was used heavily by the community.
