Damien Harris Decommits
This is very 2013 of you, recruiting.
Sam Webb is reporting that Damien Harris is no longer a Michigan commit($).
For what it's worth, his mom says that "Michigan is #1, and that hasn't changed," but that he wants to make sure he goes through the recruiting process and whatnot; also Borges's departure was a factor. (His high school coach used to be a GA for Borges.) Time will tell whether this is like the Jabrill Peppers wavering or more like George Campbell. Nussmeier made his first stop as OC Madison Southern, Harris's high school, so Michigan is on it, insofar as they can be on it.
I suggest we immediately move Fred Jackson to Beverage Coordinator and hire Mike Hart but that's just me.

Seconded! (Also, FJ would be great at that job, with his experience and all.)

He's really interested in rowing the boat. It might be tough getting him to coach at Michigan

strictly for the username. Welcome to the Blog.

Been lurking for years. Today was the first time I felt like I could actually contribute.

IMO he's the best option with Hart #2.
Wheatley is also going to be out of a job in the next couple of years because the Bills will continue to suck and the head coach will eventually get fired.

As long as Hart's streak as a player against OSU continues with his coaching tenure.
Any chance he can be an honorary MBB coach on 2/11? His involvement is the only chance I give our guys, at this point.

Can't say this was unexpected. Best of luck to him and hopefully he still ends up with the good guys.

Don't worry. Damien just forgot to flip the page on his calendar from December 2013 to January 2014. Once he realizes that this is 2014, he will be be back in the fold and solidly Blue.

Gotta respect his loyalty. Just the sort of character trait an OC would need for a program in transition.

I mentioned this on the Mgoboard, but I really need to understand why we are not taking a RB in the 2014 class if the coaches knew this was coming.

What's the big deal if we don't take a running back in this class? We still have 6 backs on scholarship even after losing Toussaint.

Ohh well. That still leaves plenty of depth, and if Rawls leaves now...........I don't think we lose anyone after the 2014 season. I'd gladly welcome another O-line or D-line guy with that scholarship as those spots are much harder to evaluate talent. The more depth the better on the lines.

Could this be because M is chasing 2014 running backs all over the place? I wondered out loud a couple days ago what kind of affect the might have on Harris' psyche. It could be the Borges thing but if we get J. Jones, as it seems we may, you have to wonder if that's not seen as a 'threat' to his playing time.
January 21st, 2014 at 11:38 AM ^
You are a little behind the times. Sam Webb said yesterday that it looks like Michigan will strike out on all three 2014 RBs -- Jones, Mack, and Ballage. Partially due to academics, supposedly. Harris' HS coach is friends with Borges, which is why the Borges firing had such a large effect on him.
January 21st, 2014 at 12:02 PM ^
Is his official visit still on? If so then I'll wait and see, Sam Webb is less then perfect. Doesn't sound promising at this point I guess but as of now we get the last crack at him.
January 21st, 2014 at 12:09 PM ^
He said they are going to stop pursuing the RB targets. Much different than striking out on them.
January 21st, 2014 at 1:55 PM ^
He also says were going to land Mcdowell, which we clearly are not.
January 21st, 2014 at 2:12 PM ^
Why? Because he doesn't text "Coach Brown" back?

gonna happen...I'm ALL in.
January 21st, 2014 at 12:35 PM ^
results from last year, this almost seems like a better situation for Harris. I understand why they say that, but it can't be the complete reason.
January 21st, 2014 at 12:55 PM ^
that Harris wanted to lead the nation in TFLs.

-srsly.
edit: And if it was a joke, I would cast some doubt on your sense of humor.

The kid needs to do what is best for him. Alabama has had alot of running backs drafted, and playing for coach Nuss can't hurt. Hopefully he comes back around. There is alot of time to go.
January 21st, 2014 at 11:40 AM ^
"Michigan is #1"
That's kind of like when a girl dumps you and says she still wants to be friends.
I'm not expecting a re-commit, if it happens that would be cool, but probably not.
We're going to have to get some running backs now in the 2014 (maybe) and 2015 classes.
January 21st, 2014 at 11:43 AM ^
We should worry more about the development of existing RBs rather than dudes who will be in college in 2 years.
January 21st, 2014 at 11:48 AM ^
So you can't develop what you have AND recruit kids that will be a part of the team in the future?
January 21st, 2014 at 11:51 AM ^
when was the last time we "developed what we had" at that position? Obsessing about a guy 2 years away won't fix that problem.
January 21st, 2014 at 12:26 PM ^
Nor will not focusing on recruiting the position and focusing almost entirely on development. It's not like you take away from developing players by recruiting.
January 21st, 2014 at 12:30 PM ^
Okay then, but you do realize that it doesn't matter how many stars a player has if you can't develop anyone.
January 21st, 2014 at 12:38 PM ^
And you do realize that you can't develop anyone if you don't recruit anyone?
January 21st, 2014 at 12:55 PM ^
In that case you can relax, we'll end up with a RB in the 2015 class. Whether or not that RB will receive adequate coaching is a different and a far more important question.
January 21st, 2014 at 1:14 PM ^
i agree with you. right now, i am not phased that we lost our two best players in the 2015 class, because in all honesty it doesn't matter. In my opinion, our coaching staff have not shown the ability to maximize anyones potential yet. I know I will get attacked but that is my opinion and wont change till i see significant player improvement happen married with results. I am worried more about our coaching capabilities, and how our program continues to stand still while other programs are passing us by. I would like to see from Hoke more position coaching changes. but i am sure we wont see it, but whatever. I will see how hoke does in year 4 and whether the fan base will be still saying next year in our year. and next year never coming
January 21st, 2014 at 7:09 PM ^
Coach Hoke was in Saginaw today, going after Cole, 2015 Heritage running back. Dantonio was there too. We need to send Lloyd Brady to seal the deal.
January 21st, 2014 at 12:02 PM ^
They could hypothetically have Green and Smith around through the end of the 2016 season so there will be guys here that are really good. But I think it will be important to have RBs in the 2015 class so they can take over for those guys or to add depth, espically if one of them leaves early.
January 21st, 2014 at 11:45 AM ^
No pressure, but anything less than 9 wins and recruiting is going to get harder and harder.
January 21st, 2014 at 1:17 PM ^
9 wins isnt enough to change anything in recruiting top end players. You have to go to indy and be able to beat your rivals. None of which see happening next year with this coaching staff. I am expecting us to go 8-4 next year
