OT: Sherman's Explanation

Submitted by MGlobules on

and some of the backdrop to the Seattle cornerback's post-game comments yesterday:

I don't think that Sherman came off well in the event. But--apropos of the thuggery accusations--it's interesting to see that he reportedly refused to be drawn into a fight with Crabtree and (apparently) settled the issue on the field. If all is as alleged, I can see why he might have felt a little wild in the aftermath.

EDIT: Just to add a little fuel to the fire, note that he has a history with Tom Brady, and his twitter comment to Crabtree:

Someone might want to point out that he DID concern himself with the "sheep;" that's what unleashed this whirlwind. At this stage his agent is probably begging him to give it a rest.

Hard to find a guy with more issues than him. He did most of his damage on Twitter because the Lion's haven't played in a Championship game in a while. (long while)

I realize even the Lions didn't keep him long but he had a lot of issues. I'm also not trying to compare Sherman to Young. As has been stated, Sherman went to Stanford so I have to believe he is an intelligent guy.

On second thought, a Lion probably doesn't count when talking about professional football.

Considering the nature of the Sherman-crabtree matchup, with the bad blood and all, the interview was similar to something you'd see in the streets after a fight where one guy wins and somebody asks what happened: "the motherfucker's been fucking with me since last year for no real reason. He's been talkin' for the last hour, so I got sick of it and tore his face off! Tell him and everybody he knows that he better not ever say my name again, or I'll be back to give him some more!"

He didn't swear or say anything nasty so what's the big deal. He just has a big mouth and ud assume they'd have some hate towards each other since they play each other twice each season. I just think he needs to learn to calm down a bit. Calling Crabtree a mediocre receiver makes his defense look bad he burned them a few times. Kinda sad for the best defense to struggle against a mediocre WR

I'm totally fine with all of this, and actually I think it's quite refreshing. Trash talk happens all game every game, and if you don't believe that you're just fooling yourself. Even many of our favorite Wolverines talk a lot of shit. It's a part of sports. Sports aren't a big deal. Trash talking isn't a big deal.

I love what he said about not judging a person based off of what they do while playing a sport, rather what they do for their family and community. Fact is, people are much more upset about this than they have been about any serious off-field incidents of any player in a long time. You want something to be mad about? How about that! The fact that people are getting so riled up at one guy's adrenaline-fueled trash talk after sending his team to the Super Bown is ridiculous in my opinion. Players have personalities and I'm glad that Sherman isn't afraid to show it.

As for Sherman's history with Crabtree, I'm sure it goes both ways. Both players are known to talk trash and I doubt either one is any more at fault than the other. But that's a part of sports, and it's really not that big of a deal.

The guy will be trying to renegotiate his deal this off-season before he turns into a free agent next year.  He has ESPN, CNN and even MGoBlog all talking about him.  Everybody knows his name and will be watching to see how does aganist Manning in the Superbowl.  Every Superbowl needs a story - he just became the story for this one.

Well played, sir, well played.

Sherman's column at MMQB is linked in this article here and is worth a read if you would care for his perspective on the matter. Click here - HERE - to read.

He talks a little about the history of his dislike for Crabtree, and he is even critical of some Seahawks fans for one particular incident:

One thing I can’t accept is what I read after the game about Seahawks fans throwing food at 49ers linebacker Navorro Bowman as he was being carted off the field with his knee injury. If it’s true, it’s beyond terrible. That’s as low as it gets. I’m sure whoever did this is in a small minority of fans, because I don’t think that kind of action is an accurate representation of the character of the 12th man.

These guys need to learn to modulate their testosterone levels.

I'm sure the NFL loved Sherman's outburst, justified or otherwise.

I watched Brady's post-game presser...you could tell he was dying on the inside, but patiently and respectfully answered  way too many silly questions than he shoud have.

Is this one really that hard? The guy acted like an a-hole and reflected badly on his team, the game, etc. He just shouldn't have done it.

But it's sports and he just got caught up in his emotions!  And he's a great player!  And once Crabtree tried to fight him!  And he went to Stanford!

It's amazing what people will try to come up with to disregard athletes acting like children.

it depends on the situation.  i DO feel comfortable taking sherman's side here, because i've watched him and the niners all season long (yay sunday ticket + redzone!).  ive watched every playoff game.  i know how both of these teams operate.  and sherman is an intelligent enough guy that he wouldn't stick his dick out like this if knew it could all turn on him in a second.  if it turns out that sherman was 100% at fault all along, then i'll happily accept my comeuppance.

id need more information to make a proper call on the hypothetical situation proposed here re: dennard, because right now its no different from fairy tales and unicorn farts.

of Sherman's brother in a Seattle paper and don't think there may be some bias involved.  We don't know the whole story behind this, but Sherman's action on the field with slapping Crabtree on the backside and the choke sign both should have been flagged and weren't.  Football is the greatest "team" game in the world and Sherman's interview was all about him.

Trash talk during a game is one thing acting like an a** during a post game is another.  Especially when its from a Stanford grad who majored in communication.

Why should Crabtree refute Sherman's claim to you or anyone else? He can just smile and let Sherman twist out there on his own. I am glad you used caps to emphasize the fact that Sherman said something though. We might have missed it.

"We"? Are you the president of the fan club, or just knight protector?

"We" as in people of the world.

Crabtree would refute to say that he isn't a punk who picks fights during the offseason and then gets all sadface when he gets his ass handed to him...

What if he doesn't? What if manning torches him? What does it mean for this just-passed game or the rant that came from it? Deion's been torched. Charles woodson's been torched. Rod woodson's been torched. Barry Sanders was shut down in green bay. It doesn't mean much, really. Oh, he can't claim to be the best because he got his lunch eaten against manning? Did manning's loss against the saints define his career or did it make him less great? Did tom Brady's loss to the giants that ruined the undefeated season change your perception of him? The one game is a big game and the spotlight is on him, but I don't think it'll break Sherman's career if he doesn't do well. He's what--three years in, right? Long ways to go before he hangs it up...

In Manning's case his career will be defined by this game. If he doesn't get another ring he will be great but won't be the best QB of this era. If Peyton gets another ring he will be relieved more than anything. As for Sherman I know one game won't define his career but if you claim to be the best you have to show up in big games. I guarantee you he gets targeted more than once while checking D. Thomas.

Fuck this explanation. The guy is that douchebag in grade school that baits you into punching him with his antics and then runs and cries to the teacher and acts like he has no part. From coming after Tom Brady multiple times, Megatron, Trent Williams, Jim Harbaugh, the 49ers now, Skip Bayless, Twitter wars against Revis....you name it, he's involved in it.

I love trash talk on the field, ice or court. Kobe, MJ, Reggie Miller....totally fine with it and I embrace it. Sherman needs to leave it on the field and act like he's been there. He's in his 3rd year in the league.
