OT: Sherman's Explanation

and some of the backdrop to the Seattle cornerback's post-game comments yesterday:

I don't think that Sherman came off well in the event. But--apropos of the thuggery accusations--it's interesting to see that he reportedly refused to be drawn into a fight with Crabtree and (apparently) settled the issue on the field. If all is as alleged, I can see why he might have felt a little wild in the aftermath.

EDIT: Just to add a little fuel to the fire, note that he has a history with Tom Brady, and his twitter comment to Crabtree:

Someone might want to point out that he DID concern himself with the "sheep;" that's what unleashed this whirlwind. At this stage his agent is probably begging him to give it a rest.

The guy has a ego. They stuck a mic in his face after making the play of the game. The emotions got the best of him and if he had to do it over again he probably would.

Sherman is a smart dude who made his way out of Compton. I don't think one blow up should overshadow what the guy has done.

Isn't the fact that virtually no other players in major league sports behave this way in interviews a pretty good indication that's it's probably not the greatest thing to do?

He's not a thug and he's not dumb, and people whose criticism of Sherman on those grounds have their own issues.  But the way he reacted is unprofessional and immature.  It's also selfish to use that forum to brag about your individual skill set in a team game and to demean your opponent while he's down.  Even if Crabtree was a jerk to him in the off-season and all game long - it's called the high-road - and Richard Sherman doesn't use it.

That's just his agent getting involved with spin control. Remember he just lost millions in endorsement opportunities and his agent would be pissed. He's still a fool.

overly excited about. The media put a camera on Tom Brady walking into the locker room. They do that hoping to capture a "moment", and Sherman happened to give them one. If they want a polished interview, let the team shower and come down from whatever mental state they have to be in to play pro football. I'm not especially fond of Sherman or his coach, but come on - he didn't commit a crime. The best way to avoid this is to get rid of sideline reporters and make the players off-limits. It almost strikes me as hypocritical for people to shout about players being tough, or having mean streaks, or playing at a high level, or any number of other phrases, and then complain when a player demonstrates that very thing. Until we have robots with on/off switches, we will witness human behavior.

Kind of hard to believe some people are clutching their pearls over a pro athlete saying he's the best CB and Crabtree is a sorry receiver. I think his statements were tacky, especially after the win, yet funny, but certainly not worth this sort of scrutiny and coverage.

Edit: I don't know what the hell Sherman was thinking when he tweeted that crap about Tom Brady. He's on my list!

not so much.  I get the being amped up thing and being excited that you just made the play to go to the SuperBowl, but his "excitement" seems a lot more like anger to me.

My biggest problem with him is he seems to always insult someone personally in each interview.  He calls Crabtree "mediocre", he calls Skip Bayless "ignorant".

I am certainly no judge on who is the best corner in the league, but I can tell you one thing...

If someone is the best, truly THE BEST at something, they shouldn't have to tell anyone.  Because, if you are truly the best at something, everyone else already knows.  If you have to keep telling everyone in every interview that you are the best at your job, then you must not be the best because you think you need to announce it all the time.

Calvin Johnson is the best example of this.  He is virtually regarded as the BEST receiver in the NFL right now.  The only player that would strongly disagree is Dez Bryant (enough said there).  Calvin Johnson has never done an interview where he says, yells or even hints that he is the best.  He proves it on the field and everyone ELSE is saying it.

THAT IS CLASS.  If you are truly the best, you skill and performance will prove it, you don't need to tell everyone.

I don't know about this: "If someone is the best, truly THE BEST at something, they shouldn't have to tell anyone." Sherman is a damned-good commodity, and he is, perhaps, the best of his type of commodity. He's also his own promoter. Every time you see an auto commercial, you see a commodity that the voiceover guy tells you is "the best in its class." If someone is the best, and he or she doesn't tell you, somebody certainly will. The stats don't speak for themselves all the time. A guy with 35 picks in his career may not be as good as a guy who has 12 and played for the same length of time. Stats don't count the way some players discourage throwing toward them. I have absolutely no problem with Sherman's claim or his anger. I wouldn't do it, 'cause it's not necessarily in my genes to be that guy, but, then again, i've never knocked down a pass against a guy I don't like to send my team to the super bowl. Oh--my bad... I meant I've never knocked a poorly thrown pass away from a guy I don't like into my teammate's hands to send our team to the super bowl.

Bayless isn't ignorant, he's just a troll. I wish I could embed (or knew how to embed) on my phone the clip where Bayless compares Sherman unfavorably to Revis. Sherman puts Bayless in his place, and ever since then I've liked Sherman. Bayless is a hack with no credibility, who does no research and writes and says things simply to get people riled up. Sherman was drafted in the 5th round, an overlooked player converted from WR, who turned himself (with great coaching) into the best in the game. I love players with things to prove and chips on their shoulders. To see millionaires still have raw uncontrollable passion is what makes this game worth watching, and I support the hell out of Sherman for showing emotion after the biggest game of their season to this point.

I think the "who knows what Crabtree did/said to him" argument is hilarious. As if the stuff doesn't happen on every play of every game. Some guys have humility and class, some don't. Some guys can control their emotions and not spout off, some can't. Some people are assholes. It is what it is. I had dinner with an MLB reliever (he was a HS teammate of a friend of mine) a few years ago. He was saying how some guys that fans and media despise are actually great guys and great teammates, they just can't keep their mouth shut. He pointed out that he loved playing with Sheffield and Manny Ramirez, but a lot of people thought they knew what they were like because of the media. He said Sheffield could go 1-3 with a bloop single and another guy goes 4-4 with 2 HR and there would be 15 media members at Sheffield's locker because if they asked the right question, he'd give them a gold nugget. They'd try to tell him to walk away, but that's not who he was. Just the way some people are.

I don't really care what Sherman said as long as he doesn't start making personal attacks against his opposition. Yes, he's got a big mouth, but you can't sit there and say that he doesn't back it up. He does, and he does it well.

He is the best at his position right now, so in my book, he's earned the right to talk some smack. Football is a mental game as much as it is physical, and I think he knows how to get inside his opposition's head. If you could do it, wouldn't you?

Just keep it about what happens on the field, and you won't hear any complaining from me.

and still going strong. Dude, you are the one person I want in Pasadena sticking up for the Wolverines. You could take on all of Socal and not even bat an eye. Trojans suck, Go Blue!
