OT: Offseason Time Sinks

Submitted by JeepinBen on

Well, it's happened. There's no more college football until August. Sure, there's the NFL playoffs, draft, etc. but there's only a few games at a time now. There's basketball and hockey both collegiate and pro, but besides watching my teams I don't get into the national broadcasts like I do for football.

The question is: what are you spending your time on  moving forward? Fixing up that old muscle car? Going to BBB & Home Depot for nice little Saturdays? Exercising per your new years resolution? New season of the Bachelor? What do you do with your newfound free time?

Thank god it's the off season. Now I can find some shelter from crushing disappointment. Oh, wait, there's still recruiting and we find ourselves looking at a #4 ranked UW basketball. Oh well. Guess it never ends. Sports!

I'm happy that offseason is here.  After a season full of watching our quarterback get sacked 10,000 times, our defense massively underperform and have a crap record ending in a crap bowl game against a crap opponent where our guys played like crap.  Aside from the Notre Dame game, the happiest I was during the college football season was during Michigan's two bye weeks.  It's sad but true.  That's why I'm happy to welcome offseason with open arms.

Ten years ago, I wouldn't dare say this but I'm happy to have a break from football for a while.

I really liked the guitar response. All of the rest sound fairly boring. What do you do? Live life super hard. Get outside of the box you've built around yourself. Find new friends that question the way you think and challenge you. Quit your job and go on an adventure to a place you never thought you could go. Fall in love. Get your heart broken. Feel more than you've felt in the previous years of your life combined. Take part in a shamanic ritual with peyote or ayahuasca. Reach as far as you possible can and then reach even further. After all of that make your way back to the states at the end of August so you can once again take part in the greatness that is Michigan football.

got reaquainted with my rock n roll self a little over a year ago (after about 38 years - haha).  Been playing out in some local bars with 4 other "old" guys, doing classic rock.  But they all cringe when I put the football schedule as NO PLAY DATES.  Every home game plus usually 2 away games.   Its great fun - never thought I'd be doing it, but what the hell.  Not sure the wife gets the "full appreciation" as I'm the only married dude in the band .... all others are divorced.  Hmmm think that has anything to do with hanging in bars ?

I fashioned a brew room in my basement utility room and jumped back in to brewing my own beer.  I've done renditions (clones) of Bell's 2 Hearted, Weihenstaphner, and New Castle Brown.  They aren't exact replicas because I need to hone my skills a little more.  I've also started making other types of alcohol that aren't exactly legal to make.

I hope to wake up to find that it is not -17 degrees. I would miss the restart of the Americans series (with a backwards K), though. How they can make you sympathize with a Soviet sleeper agent- or a meth cook for that matter- is beyond me, but I like it.

I actually like this time. I love the anticipation of a new team and a new season. Who will sign? What will happen at the spring game? Who will be the breakout star? Our record is clean and I can be excited again.

To fill my days I'll keep rooting for the Patriots and 49ers, cheer for Michigan basketball and hope the Red Wings find ways to win. Oh yeah, and take care of my two kids.

There's no sport that's less satisfying to watch. You wait all year for it to finally come again and by the time you get into it and teams settle into their groove, the season is over and we're back to waiting.

We just got a club started last summer in Kalamazoo and finally have the funds to order our uniforms. The order should be placed by next week and we should have them by April. I'll be working on some more fundraising as well and getting our equipment ready for year #2. Plus no football means more weekend time for grad school homework.

Out here in Oregon I am hoping for some cold weather and snow. It has been very dry and mid 40s all fall/ winter. Mt. Hood barely has any snow and my ski stuff is gather too much dust for my liking.

I am also looking forward to watching the Olympics. I have always enjoyed the Winter Olympics more than summer due to the unique sports that are showcased.

For me I am at a bit of a crossroads. When I got married 12 years ago we moved into an apartment. It took me all of two days to figure out that renting was the worst scam imaginable. We stayed the month and bought a house.

When I bought the house it was supposed to be a project ofr me and my father, something that we keep us close even though I no longer lived under the same roof. I loved the house and thought once I got it finished I would increase the value to about 4 times what I paid for it, but always figured I would live there until I retired.

7 years into the project my Dad passed away and I pretty much lost the will to complete it. I have wallowed in this state for the past 4 years and now I just want out of here so this off-season all my spare time will be spent finishing what I've started and hopefully selling this house. A house I always liked in my community is coming on the market in a short time so I want to complete it soon, but if it doesn't happen I guess a new build is up for the next off-season.

As far as games go, I'm with most others in the CoD Ghost multiplayer feedback....it sucks! I wish you could play your PS3 games on the PS$, what a scam! I have to keep switching back and forth!

Besides our basketball team, the spring game and soccer (the World Cup and a GREAT Prem season), I have a few thoughts.

First, if you want an addictive iPhone game, download MyTown 2. Fair warning though, it'll take over your life.

And my question. I haven't gotten a new gaming system in probably eight years, but I'm going for one of the new ones. So: PS4 or Xbox One? What say you, MGoBoard?
