Is anyone rooting for MSU to win the Rose Bowl?
Is anyone rooting for MSU in the Rose Bowl? I suppose you could make a case that we ought to. The Big Ten's national perception is really bad, of course (thanks in part to ESPN's intentional submarining of the conference, IMO, but that's perhaps another post). A victory by MSU might have a positive ripple effect for the rest of the conference next year, especially when it's time to select the four teams for the Kodiak Smokeless Tobacco College Football Playoff Presented by Lloyd's of London and Kia Motors.
I know that I simply can't bring myself to root for MSU, though I have to respect what they've done with their program. I remember being a kid and seeing MSU go to the 1988 Rose Bowl and thinking that something just wasn't right about the situation, and I feel pretty much the same way now. Sure, they've earned the right to be there, but just a surely, the football gods must be offended by this current state of affairs. It is not right, in some fundamental way, like a household in which two dogs watch TV and use kitchen appliances while humans scamper around on the floor begging for scraps.
But anyway, is anyone rooting for MSU? I don't blame you if you are. As I said, it makes some sense.

Ah, yes. Hating on State won't make me love Michigan more nor will it win any games for Michigan. Besides, I love their D. Too much hate for State--hell too much focus--just turns us into our characterization of them.

for the schoolyard retort. Did you go out of your way to make my point? In fact, I know I have read that very response on Spartantailgate.

Having grown up in Ohio and loving Michigan my entire life I got a new perspective when I lived in AA for 5 years in late 90s early 2000s. Growing up I thought the Michigan/ohio game was the top but I feel now it is mich state then notre dame (personal but I feel accurately represents many Blue fans) THEN ohio.
I would rather see ohio when vs. Clemson than mich state win vs. Stanford. As bad as that seems "little brothers" should never win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Never.
It would be interesting to know how many of the no vs. yes votes live in Michigan. I suspect most Michigan residents who are M fans hope Sparty gets pounded and most M fans rooting for them are non-Michigan residents.

wants State to win because it would be good for the B1G and the state of Michigan. The other part of me wants them to lose horribly. Hmmm, I guess it's going to ultimately depend on which team I put my money on!

I'm SO tired of hearing people (mostly MSU fans) say they hate people who cheer for Michigan who didn't go to school there.....SOOOO....I didn't go to school at MSU (Michigan grad here); and therefore, I will not cheer for them.

I hate that argument too. How is it a good thing that your school only appeals to people who attended there?
But the world is full of bandwagon jumpers. West Michigan, where I live, used to have the rep of being full of Wolverine fans who never went to UM. But now all you see is Sparty gear everywhere. So go figure.
Looking for a huge Sparty loss today.

I just don't get this concept of rooting against MSU and OSU except when they play us or if a loss in conference helps us win a division title. Guys, that is the kind of thinking that prevails in places like Columbus and East Lansing where they remain focused on how we do instead of how they do. Like it or not, we are living through the tear down and rebuilding phases of Michigan football since Bo died in 2006. A little humility and grace might be a good thing to acquire, before we get all arrogant again (boy, I hope we get good enough to be arrogant again someday!).
But, if you have to define yourself by rooting against your big rivals, I guess that is your choice but not mine.

Seriously, your parents never taught you that ohio is the number 1 enemy and that state was not as bad?

I am rooting for Sparty. I guess I don't have to, but I do buy into the whole "Go Big Ten" meme. I always want to see the conference do well. I think that it becomes less of an issue when we suck. This year has been painful and I am glad that it is over.

yes and i usually would say no.
somehow, they won me over by playing good football. perhaps i have seen so little of that lately is why it affected me...

I always root for the B1G teams in bowls. It's something my father taught me.

Hell no. I hope they get stomped by Stanford, and I hope that OSU gets bitch-slapped by Clemson.

Since when did our dislike of MSU become so great? 5 years ago, sure, nobody (in the Michigan fandom universe) liked MSU but I don't remember people wishing for them to lose to other teams. They beat ohio, which we all desperately wanted to happen, they kept those a-holes out of the MNC, the least we can do is wish them well in their bowl game, no?

No. Never.
I'll be rooting for Nebraska (despite Pellini), Wisconson, & Iowa.
To Hell with Sparty, Ohio & Notre Dame...forever.
