OT: Narduzzi Turns Down UCONN HC Job
Apparently Narduzzi has turned down UCONN. I personally think that was the beter call. I figured this was important info since he is one of the best defensive coordinators in the BIG on a team in our division. Can't wait for the who cares posts.

This isn't MSU's first good year. They have played in two of the 3 B1G championship games. And IN MY OPINION, Dantonio is every bit the coach as the guys you listed. he has consistantly had a top 5 defense with 3 star players. Guess we'll find out a little bit more regarding Shaw v Dantonio in about a month. I would have to go with Dantonio overall cause he's doing it with less talent at a school that's harder to create a dominant program. Mike Gundy has won the B1G once since 05. Jimbo Fisher has been productive, but look at the players he puts on the field, 5* galore.

Dantonio was a successful DC at OSU before he became a head coach. I doubt anyone's that worried about his defensive bona fides, more that he's on the older side and the trend has been going against that.

MSU will be headed back to the high-middle to middle of the pack in a couple years as Michigan's recruiting continues to dominate and the team dramatically improves. Narduzzi should move on to a better school when the opportunity arises.

In case you haven't noticed, recruiting is at most half the equation. Coaching and their ability to develop talent is huge, and our coaching staff has not shown they can produce yet. Until then, where's the threat? IMO it's not in this state.

Edit: Not sure if this was supposed to be a reply to my comment or the one above, but he said our RECRUITING has dominated. I didn't say anything about dominating, so your comment still wouldn't make any sense.

You really think Narduzzi wants to begin his head coaching career when he's in his mid-50s? If so, he's not too bright. You cash your chips in now. His stock isn't getting higher.

This cannot possibly have been a surprise to anyone. It would be nice if someone else came calling and got him away from MSU, but I have a feeling we're cursed to live with him and his magic Borges voodoo until something in the dynamic changes(hint it won;t be Narduzzi going anywhere).
December 11th, 2013 at 2:24 PM ^
I understand all the "he can do better" sentiment. He is from the northeast though right? If he wants to go back to wherever home or family is at all, what programs are there opportunities at?
December 11th, 2013 at 2:27 PM ^
Saban went to contract re-negotiation school on Les Miles. Everytime there is a big-time opening at a competing program simply buy a airline ticket there for you and the misses. Spend the day with whatever realitor is available and make sure they know who you are and where you are from. Talk to no one from the school with the opening but look at five or six houses, grab a lunch and head home.
When you return the AD will ask you where you were and what were you doing there. You can say, without lying, we were simply looking at homes and didnt meet with anyone (again without lying). Say you were considering a second home there (again, not lying).
Sign your 15MM contract extension and go home.

Moving from an MSU DC to a UCONN HC is a downgrade.
December 11th, 2013 at 4:12 PM ^
I completely agree with this. UCONN is just another dead end job. Why leave the best defense in football for a crappy head coach job that will be incredibly difficult to succeed with?
December 11th, 2013 at 4:23 PM ^
This belief that "UConn is a horrible" job needs to die. Randy Edsall won at UConn. You can win there especially in that conference. UConn gets good athletes and has wealthly alums. While not MSU it is akin to a Cincinnati, where Mork got his first gig.
December 11th, 2013 at 5:06 PM ^
To be fair, Edsall "won" at UConn to the tune of a bunch of 8-5 seasons. That's fine, but it isn't necessarily a place that has immense upward mobility. You can recruit there somewhat, but (a) it will probably always be a basketball school, and (b) it plays in such a mediocre conference that the perception of it being second-rate will hurt going after kids that give you a chance at the top. I think it is a good enough job for most guys, but if you are Narduzzi this probably going to be your one chance at a top job unless you absolutely blow up at UConn; I'm not sure that will happen and if not, you'll just be the guy who presided over a 7-8 win team for years.
December 11th, 2013 at 5:26 PM ^
And they have won 2 conference championships in the past 10+ years. I would argue that for Narduzzi, it would be a "horrible" move. Purdue will come knocking, if not somebody else.

The head coaching job at Texas isn't the best job in college football...That would be your opinion.

Places like Bama and Texas will look at *names* before they look at non-names and hot coordinators. Narduzzi obvioulsy fits the latter category. Dantonio fits the former, imho.
On the other hand, places like UConn (practically a mid-major) will look at anyone with a major college pedigree.

Did you hear Herbstreit throw Jim Harbaugh out there on ESPN last night? Typical Kork Herbie wild speculation.
December 11th, 2013 at 4:09 PM ^
I wonder what the odds are that those sources are Narduzzi's agent? Coaches who feel they are not going to get a job often "withdraw" from a process before a decision is made. It seems very odd there were no report of him being offered the job until the report came out that he had turned it down.
December 11th, 2013 at 4:10 PM ^
Damn. I was hoping he would GTFO of East Lansing. That guy has owned our team and I am really sick of it.
December 11th, 2013 at 5:28 PM ^
I really hope somebody poaches him. Really tired of getting manhandled by their D.
December 11th, 2013 at 4:11 PM ^
Thats a smart decision by Narduzzi. UConn is probably not a job you want to take, and once the coaching search musical chairs begin with Texas Narduzzi may find a much better spot once the dust settles.
Either way he could just hold out until next year where I am sure Nebraska, Illinois, and Purdue will all be looking for new HC's.
December 11th, 2013 at 4:21 PM ^
Is there any chance Narduzzi wants to wait until after the bowl game and weigh his options? I think he's loyal to his players and won't make any decision until after January. UConn might be a step down, but it gets his feet wet as a head coach.
December 11th, 2013 at 4:47 PM ^
What jobs would you anticipate opening up after the bowl season that he would be willing to look at? Not being a dick, genuinely asking.
December 11th, 2013 at 5:09 PM ^
I'm not sure about the poster, but let's not forget that the UM job opened up after RR's bowl loss. And more importantly, when a major program like USC, Texas, etc. makes a move, that can set off a ripple as schools have to fill moving coaches. It could well end with Narduzzi getting a shot at a team you don't even think about because the popular HC moves somewhere else. For example, Boise St. had to find a new HC when Peterson left; that could happen other places without warning.
December 11th, 2013 at 5:00 PM ^
I'm a bit surprised that he passed UConn because it has potential of being a pretty good team in the future with the right recruiting, but I'm guessing that he is either waiting on a better offer or he honestly wants to stick around in EL. But looking at the roster for next year, that team will undoubtedly take a (smallish) step back, but that might be enough to eliminate many of his options.
Regardless, he's a good DC and if he wants to be an HC, he'll get his chance. I do remember a particularly senior poster around here saying he spoke to Narduzzi on a flight or something and thought he wasn't quite the type to handle the alumni events, politicking, recruiting, etc. related to coaching, so he might be content to stick around under Dantonio and just be a coach. There are worst futures than getting paid to do your job well.
