Is quite possibly one of the most pathetic teams I have seen this year. They can't run the ball, they can't throw veritcal, they can't stop the rush or generate any pass rush, and their secondary blows coverages all day long. I took them as they were given 24 points, and I'm at a loss of words with how bad they are.

Wow. That's a bad call.
September 21st, 2013 at 6:19 PM ^
Wow ND must be paying these refs.
September 21st, 2013 at 6:20 PM ^
That one however, looked like a bad call.
September 21st, 2013 at 6:21 PM ^
The big time PI calls I've seen were not even close to PI including this one. If there have been more by Sparty then so be it but the calls close and near the redzone have been terrible calls on great defense.
September 21st, 2013 at 6:23 PM ^
You can't put your hands on the receiver 10+ yards downfield and not expect to be called. That one was good defense though.

Two in the first half. One in the endzone "in the corner" and the DB was called for I don't know what. Faceguarding (though not a penalty) even though he turned his head at the end. And another that was in a similar place as this one if I recall where there wasn't much contact beyond handsy play by BOTH players.
I know, not the best way to exemplfiy but those two I remember from the first half and remember them to be very bad calls.
September 21st, 2013 at 6:20 PM ^
Oh my God what are these referees calling on SParty!!! These are atrocious penalty calls. It's ruining the game.

all the other PI's have been legimate. That is the only one that looked like bad call.
September 21st, 2013 at 6:22 PM ^
if M doesn't play like a pack of pussies like against Akron, they'll probably be fine.
September 21st, 2013 at 6:25 PM ^
good lord, let it go.
I swear if M goes 11-1 and wins the Rose Bowl people are still going to crap on the season for the Akron game.
September 21st, 2013 at 6:28 PM ^
You have me mistaken. I wasn't pleased with last week but a W is a W. Could care less about how it's done. All i'm saying is if they wheel out a shithouse performance like that again, they'll lose to Staee.

It's in the EULA.

Are these ACC or B1G refs? Because they really blew that call.

Well, at least we can say ACC and B1G refs call the game objectively (even if poorly). Now about those PAC refs .. .

September 21st, 2013 at 6:22 PM ^
Who is Rees throwing to in the end zone on these red zone plays? I mean, he seems to find someone eventually, but still...
...and ND goes up 17-10 (PAT pending) on a nice little run by McDaniel. Once again, the end credit music for "Airplane!" can be heard in the background.

it's bad when the ND announcers think calls are questionable
September 21st, 2013 at 6:24 PM ^
Boy, the officials don't respect the MSU secondary at all (and with some reason). I like it. Once you get a rep as a DB that can't cover without interfering, it's hard to shake it. I hope that continues when we play them.

a good call, but I agree with your overall sentiment. MSU defensive backs are known for being overly physical, they are simply being called out on it by the officials in this game( who are a Big Ten crew). I find their bitching pretty funny in that context, though I do understand their frustration with that last call.
September 21st, 2013 at 6:34 PM ^
Don't mean this in a snarky way...But you're okay with that call going against Michigan DBs?
I am not. Recievers these days are able to touch and "push"/nudge and it's okay but when a DB happens to slightly do anything of that nature it's an automatic flag and I personally think it's lame. Like many things it'll differ from person to person on their interpretation of PI but I prefer the days of old (as if I was around then) when some contact was okay and recievers weren't gifted calls, as IMO they are today.
September 21st, 2013 at 6:42 PM ^
are probally given too much leeway nowadays, but the fact of the matter is that is how it is and teams are aware of it. No team can claim that their ignorant of that fact. MSU's dbs see that the refs are calling it tight today, but yet they foolishly keep on pressing the issue anyways. That is not on the refs, that is MSU rolling the dice at their own peril and not adjusting to the way the game is being called.

Disagree. MSU has built up a reputation as a dirty team and now it's simply biting them in the ass. What is Dantonio going to do? Some of these calls are weak, yes, but his team's gotten away with a shitload of dirty crap in years past, and opposing teams can easily find tape of that.
September 21st, 2013 at 6:29 PM ^
are basically asking for it. When you play overly physical, as they do, you risk being called for PI's. Just because they get away with it most of the time, doesn't mean those aren't legimate, with the exception of that last one which was pure bullcrap.
Not sure what is so hard to understand. You get 5 yards to bump the receiver, past that you risk PI if you put your hands on the receiver.
September 21st, 2013 at 6:29 PM ^
At some point you have to adjust to officiating. They're not laying defensive backs play physical, bump, and grab coverage all the way down the field. MSU's players haven't seemed to figure it out.
September 21st, 2013 at 6:45 PM ^
games, MSU's defensive backs are allowed get it away with it. The refs in this game aren't having that, but yet MSU's defensive backs still keep on doing the same things over and over again.
