Derrick Walton Mr. Basketball runner-up
Trey Burke's eventual replacement (e.g. next season), Derrick Walton, has finished as Michigan's Mr. Basketball runner-up. The winner, Monte Morris out of Flint, is headed to Iowa State and, incidentally, didn't have an offer from either UofM or MSU.

Edit: Well, many seem to think Morris did have a Michigan offer and I defer to their knowledge of the situation. It is not listed on Morris' Rivals or Scout page, thus the confusion.
Pull his scholarship!!!!!!!one!!!11!!!
may be getting a couple of new envelopes in the mail soon (rules permitting).
He's already signed his LOI though.
These guys are signed on the dotted line, not just committed, so they will be attending ISU (Morris) and UM (Walton) unless they want to sit out a year.
Derrick Walton finishes in 2nd place for the 2013 Mr. Basketball Award. Morris & Walton were both offered by Michigan. Walton took it

he can Bogenshutz the hell up!
not really
Bogenschutz the hell up!*
Rivals disagrees with Mr. Bogenschutz. http://rivals.yahoo.com/basketballrecruiting/basketball/recruiting/player-Monte-Morris-112003
So does Mr. Bogenschutz's employer, Scout: http://michigan.scout.com/a.z?s=162&p=8&c=1&nid=5388376
after Michigan camp. it's basically first come, first served kind of offer. Walton just happen to commit to Michigan before Morris and Jackson (Beilein offerred to three PGs). Once Walton committed to Michigan, the offers disappear.
This is what we heard from the ISU side as well.
It's well documented that Walton, Morris, and Jackson were all offered by Michigan, and "first come, first served" was the exact approach. This umhoops.com post has a good summary of Walton's recruitment.
But it was only the beginning of what would turn out to be a high-pressure recruitment for Walton. Walton was one of the best point guards in the area, but he had competition: Monte Morris, a talented point guard from Flint, was also being hotly pursued by Michigan.
The Michigan coaches needed to know if they were going to be getting a point guard in the 2013 class. So the Wolverine staff offered both prospects – and Demetrius Jackson down the line – waiting to see which prospect would jump at the offer.
And James Young just another 56 points behind that.
What was the story on James Young - why did he never seem to be a serious possibility or target for either UM or MSU?
I could be wrong, but I thought I remember him having grade issues.
He had an MSU offer but Izzo never pursued him that much because he played the same position as Jabari Parker. He said a while back that he didn't feel MSU really wanted him. Oops.
`would have been nice for Derrick to win, but doesn't change his status as a player.
No doubt about it. I'm excited to see what the team looks like with a fresh face at PG. Trey is an unbelievable player and will hopefully lead the team far in the tourney this year, but a frosh PG that defers to his more experienced but ultra-talented teammates will be fun to watch next season. Maybe more of a return to Bielien ball instead of so much iso.....at least I hope so.
Am I missing something? Does Morris play in a much better division? Their stats:
Derrik Walton - 26.2 ppg, 7 apg, 7.3 rpg, 7.3! steals per game
Monte Morris - 18.3 ppg, 6.4 apg, 5.4 rpg, 3.5 steals per game
"named for the former Free Press sports writer who covered high school athletics for more than 40 years."
Just sayin
Walton's Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy is a Class B school, Morris' Flint Beecher is Class C.
All that means is that in the playoffs, Walton faces larger schools that are, presumably, better than smaller schools.
As far as conferences/leagues: Chandler Park Academy is in the Charter School League and Beecher is in Gennesse Red. Granted I was in high school from '92-'96, but no schools in either league stand out as traditional powers.
Both Beecher and CPA played some good non-conference games though - Beecher played Pershing, CPA played Rochester (and James Young).
This is garbage..CPA played Country Day twice and Rochester.. Class C bball is a joke. I know because I go to state finals every yr.. Flint Beecher was not impressive at all.. This is garbage. lIke when the kid ( who also happend to go to a Class C school) that went to MSU and then couldnt handle the pressure.
There's a lot of politics involved in the voting for Mr. Basketball. It doesn't always go to the best player in the state. Players outside the Detroit area sometimes benefit when there are several Detroit area candidates.
Walton got robbed.
Walton did get screwed.
i watch Flint Beecher last yr at state finals and was not impressed at all.... This pisses me off.. when i read the title i thought young won.. This comes as a big surprise..
Morris has been a known name since his freshman year while Walton wasnt very well-known until his signed with Michigan last year. Also working against Walton is James Young. Both are in the Metro Detroit area and likely split the vote amongst the voters, while Morris likely took the Tri-Cities, Thumb and Northern Lower.
And the fact that Morris has a state title and has been to at least the semifinals in each of his first 3 years doesnt hurt. Barring any crazy upsets this week, he will likely win his second straight state title as Beecher is Class C #1 at 23-1 with that lone loss coming to Class A #1 (and undefeated) Detroit Pershing.
I was hoping Walton won to inch M closer to MSU in Michigan Mr. Basketball attending their school. As of now MSU has 13, Michigan 10 and the field has 10

Good one. I thought he did. I will leave it for now, but it's definitely going to committee
It looks like Michigan got the best of them.
Boy, that sums up where the two programs have been. We had the edge, 8-4, as late as 1998. Since then they've clobbered us, 9-2. Also, they've recently pulled two Detroit guys (Nix and Appling) whereas we traditionally dominated recruiting there.

does any body know if this is the Jerald Robinson we all know. Looking at the shirt in the article and that he is from canton im guessing it is
Right age also. I guess it's not impossible that there is another Jerald Robinson who is a 21 year old Michigan fan in Canton, Ohio.....but not likely.
Walton may have finished second in Mr Basketball, but the way JB is putting the Wolverines together, Walton may get some much better awards, trophies, and memories at Michigan than Morris will at ISU.
Walton averaged a QUADRUPLE SEPTUPLE in high school. Just wanted to write that. Thank you very much.
