OT: Saturday Drinking Thread/ Open Thread
Well, it's later than usual and there isn't one up on the board. Tonight I'm drinking Rolling Rock out of 24oz cans, not good stuff, but I bought fifteen of them for fifteen bucks, so what the hell.
Meanwhile, the power is out at my apartment until Monday; I'm over at a friends sitting on the couch while two girls watch One Tree Hill by the season and I attempt to keep my sanity by 1) Booze and 2) MGoBlog. On the other hand, there's air conditioning, light, internet and refrigeration. What's everyone else up to this evening?
Nominated for the "Best Comment/Avatar Pair of the Night" Award.
watching Ortiz/Lopez and it's a great fight to be honest. However, Ortiz will get clowned by Canelo Alvarez. His defense is to bad and Canelo has more than enough power to end it quickly.
Homebrewed mango-saffron mead. I call it a-Maizing Mango Mead. Naturally, my blueberry mead is MGoBlue-berry mead.
and that should be the end of ortiz and his career. No one will waste their time with him anymore.
Out of curiosity, what were you ranting about? I missed it.
I was at the Detroit City FC game against AFC Cleveland, and when they scored to tie it up in the 85th minute the whole team ignored their small group of fans and ran over to our supporter's section to taunt us. I still think it was utterly classless (and fitting of a team in Ohio), but now realize it wasn't thread worthy.
Devil's Cut (neat).
I have had most every bourbon I can get my hands on, in all ranges of price, and I never thought something by Jim Beam would top my list. This stuff is amazingly smooth with excellent flavor.
I do drink Jim Beam when I have an Old Fashioned (I like JB better than Makers [I know, I know, commence with the negbangs] and I'm a creature of habit), but the best I've had neat is Pappy Van Winkle 23. Way out of my price range, but my uncle had some around Christmas this year and I loved it.
Edit: Now that I'm looking at it, I think it was actually the 15. Spending $175 or whatever on a bottle of liquor is out of character for him (he's a wine collector), but not as much as a $500 bottle.
Never tried Pappy...not only expensive, but it can be hard to find as well.
Stopped drinking Makers after the banner they put up in Columbus a while back to toast M's dismal season. If you have regular JB around, take a sip of that before you dive into Devil's Cut. Amazing they're made by the same company.
and has something where he's alerted about the yearly (or bi-yearly, whatever) shipment. PVW might have something on their site, or maybe he just asked someone at Morgan and York (again, fuzzy on details but that would be my guess for where he'd go) to let him know, but even then he said there's a big line and a lot of people go home disappointed.
I haven't had a lot of really good bourbon, but it blew me away.
Fun fact: I live 4 miles away from where they distill PVW, pretty interesting tour they have. 1 of only I believe 3 distillerys that stayed open through Prohibition as they had a "medicinal" license.
I certainly hope no one here would neg you for preferring another whiskey over Makers. Others may have forgotten about this banner (put up in Columbus during the midst of the RR era), but I most certainly have not. Not a drop of MM has touched my lips since. That being said, although I'm not the biggest fan of American whiskey, white label JB gets my vote as well.
Edit: Didn't see 707oxford's earlier post, so I apologize for the redundancy.
I don't think more or less about anyone from their choice of brands, but I know I'll rip of friends of mine who like "crappy" types of beer, and I definitley expect to hear an earful on a reply about good bourbon when I say I regularly drink Beam.
FWIW this advertisement has always bothered me, not only for the obvious reason but also because it seems to be such a dumb marketing decision. In the Age of The Interwebs it seems stupid to think that this would remain a "local" ad, and given the economic demographics of the respective alumni bases it wouldn't seem to make economic sense as well. And MM prides itself as a KY whiskey so why get involved in any MI/OH rivalry?
In any case I've sent out a respectful inquiry to MM to see if there was any follow-up to this ad. I know, should probably just drop this but I"m curious to see what the customer service folks will have to say about this. If it's anything interesting I'll post it here and the next time I see that ad on the blog; otherwise I'll let it drop for good.
Most normal people have already forgotten about it. If they drank Maker's Mark before, they probably still do. They probably lost a few bat shit crazy Michigan fans, but picked up a similar number of bat shit crazy Ohio State fans.
Anyone who seriously alters their drinking habits because of this ad has a completely different set of issues.
I've tried (regular) Bulleit, which I do like, but I've never been as fond of ryes in general, so I haven't tried theirs yet. Will have to check it out.
That's been my go-to drink of the last few weeks, and its tops! Love it!
were basically two different types of spirits? That said, I have tried Bulliet Rye based on previous comments here; jury is still out. Forgot about the Makers Mark issue....
I used to really enjoy single malt scotch, but the prices have skyrocketed. Looking for alternatives among American whiskys (whiskies?). Really fine tequila (Don Julio 1942, etc.) also under consideration.
Watching the MSU vs Jawja Gator Bowl game on the BTN drinking some Old Milwaukee. Looking forward to getting on the lake tomorrow to do some long over due fishing.
Now, I've heard of a Guinness shandy, but I'm not sure how I feel about Guinness mixed with Summer Shandy...
It seems to resemble a soap opera for teen girls about a ridiculous group of people from the same high school. I had never heard of it before tonight, but I'm confortable saying it's terrible after not much viewing. They have actors that appear thirty-something playing high school kids. That terrible.
Guinness. From the draft can.
Just tried my first summer shandy... poured the second half down the drain. Now drinking a Miller High Life while watching Ice Road Truckers.
Yes, you guessed it... the wife and kid are asleep.
I'm going to bump you to +5 because you mentioned my 2 favorite beers but WTF the Shandy is the shit. I was going crazy here in KY as it took a good month to migrate south after it was released.
I JUST TRIED A SUMMERSHANDY MYSELF FOR THE FIRST TIME EARLIER. I WAS HIGHLY DISAPOINTED. IT WAS LIKE SOMEONE POURED HALF A MIKE'S HARD INTO MY BEER.
DAMMIT CAPS LOCK.
OH WELL. I'M NOT GOING TO CHANGE IT NOW.
OK, I am done venting.
....but, what are you drinking??
Drink a few more and then pull out the Electric Slide to change things up.
When I was stationed in Germany, I used to go to the fests religiously. The traditional German um-pa-pa music was hard to get used to at first, but after a few liter mugs of fest beer I started to enjoy it. Was a really good time.
I would like to go to a Jewish wedding. They look like a really good time. Breaking glasses, crowd surfing on chairs ect.
