of course you would doubt that
how dare that fat ass offer a player that went to MSU? does he now know the rules?

We can hate on Dantonio all we want, but the guy has been able to take some so-so recruiting classes and put together pretty solid teams. Maybe we should wait until we beat them to trash their recruiting ability.
Luckily for Dantonio, he has had the benefit of playing three RR defenses.
and last year does not count because it was in east lansing. the games only count when it is in ann arbor
which is why michigan fans brag about the overall series record
Legitimately. As much as Sparty hates to hear this, the bottom line is it's true. They try and retort that when they lost 6 in a row it was because of their shitty coach, which, fine, but shitty coaching doesn't explain away the all time record. It does, however, along with a host of other factors, explain the current streak. Let's look at the years.
2008 - there's no debate that we were terrible. We were Indiana bad. Do you really want credit for beating Indiana? Probably, because you're State, so go ahead and take it.
2009 - two freshman QBs, still adjusting to a completely new system, etc. Losing record, no bowl.
2010. The defense, goodness gracious.
2011. Clearly the most legitimate win. Trash tornado, crazy Borges, bad Denard, and, to be fair, a good MSU team.
What's crazy is that they think they're world beaters under Dantonio the last 2 years. Legit wins:
2010 - Wisky, ND (final play but who are we to judge that), kinda PSU, Mich (sans defense).
2011 - OSU (in the ugliest football game ever played.), Mich (under new staff, which no coach has ever from eitehr has beaten the other in his first year), Wisky, Georgia.
Now, losses to good teams in those years:
2010 - Iowa thumping, Alabama hahahahahaha woodshed sodomization.
2011 - ND, Nebraska, Wisky.
So before we go heralding Mark Dantonio as this magician with subpar classes, realize that the only wins against better recruiting teams are '10 ND, '10 PSU, '10 Mich, '11 OSU, '11 Mich, '11 Georgia.
ND is easily explainable away given that mess in South Bend recently. OSU '11 is clearly explicable.
Sparty fans like to say "well Rich Rod had great classes and we kicked his ass," which completely misses the point. When adjusting systems, it clearly takes time. Great recruiting classes aren't going to contribute right away. And Lloyd's classes from before Rich Rod arrived were clearly mismatched for what RR needed.
The bottom line is that Mark Dantonio is Kirk Ferentz. Good coach, liked by a program who is clearly on a level well below elite. Some success, but will always be unable to take the next step. Partly because of a lack of program resources and tradition, and partly, I have to assume, because he is an unlikeable prick who spends more time hating Michigan than he does anything else in his life.
I would like to beat Sparty this year, badly, but I understand the OL and DL garbage Brady Hoke was given. I don't have a single ounce of doubt that the future matchups between our two schools will turn out they way they always have, heavily in favor of Michigan.
This is rambling, awful, and riddled with errors and inconsistencies, but the point stands. Within a couple years, we'll be far ahead of them again.
Actually, I like your post. Not that I agree with it all. But it was a good read. Thanks for sharing.
Many of the others make me think that crotchedy old bastard Ortega y Gassett could have been right.
Scarn,
Ok, remind me to bump this thread after UM plays Alabama this fall. The team MSU played in their bowl game had seven NFL draft picks, including a couple of first rounds. It was a complete mismatch, kinda like the woodshed sodomization dished out to UM by Miss State that year...
And you're wrong to say "it takes time". Dantonio took that horrid, absolutely embarrassing John L defense and turned them around in one season, from 4-8 to 7-5 and a respectable (although not impressive) defense. In one season, he plugged in starts who had been previously riding the bench and went to a bowl game. So it doesn't always take time. Like it or not, it's similar to what Hoke did in his first year. Took a bunch of kids that didn't fit and worked his magic. You're right, UM has almost always outrecruited MSU so respect the rivalry to an extent and give Dantonio credit for what he accompished with AT BEST fair players and recruits.

What does "bump this thread" mean? Did I say Alabama was a bad team or even not elite? Did I say Michigan would beat Alabama this year? All I know is that was legitimately the largest gap in talent and athleticism I've possible ever seen between two BCS conference teams. I'm not kidding or serving up hyperbole, I was afraid for the safety of MSU players.
Is anyone ignoring that Michigan got beaten down by Miss St.? No. That loss was the straw that broke the camels back and got RR fired. Meanwhile, Dantonio was lauded as the savior and greatest coach in the world for that season by your fanbase at large. Did they have different seasons? Absolutely. But my point ws simply that the whole "look Dantonio beats all these great teams with less talent" thing is a little overblown when you really examine the results. Like I said, he's a good coach, but the ceiling is clear.
And let me say I have, by no means, puffed my chest and celebrated this season. Really, I think you won't find a lot of fans around here who are real fired up about last year. Sure we're happy that we won a BCS game (how's that quest going for your squad?) but we understand the schedule, breaks, and way things shook out. Am I glad Michigan beat OSU and ND? Sure.
Respect the rivalry? I start losing respect for opponents when I witness players with intent to injure and hear people in your Soviet era concrete parking garage stadium scream "rip his head off" about Denard and 40 year old men try to fight me in front of their 6 year old kids because I cheer when Michigan scores a touchdown. Besides, I acknowledge that Dantonio is a good coach.
I just think that it's hilarious for State fans to assume that because they were able to beat Michigan the last 4 years with classes lower rated (under completely different circumstances), that it's going to continue to be that way. State fans should be acknowledging the domination Hoke has done in recruiting, especially in the Midwest, especially in head-to-head battles with Dantonio's, and especially the style of player Dantonio wants.

Scarn, FWIW - I'm an MSU grad, and I have almost no problem with anything you've written here. As I said above, I may not agree with all of it, but it's mostly respectable (perhaps minus the "domination" part, which really sounds like two school children on a playground making "I'm better than you" claims about things outside their control [IMHE, I "shouldn't" be "acknowledging" anything other than my excellent degree and job, and my good relationships with M and MSU grads alike]).
April 16th, 2012 at 10:46 PM ^
You'll have to forgive me, arguments with rivals get me a little heated sometimes. Appreciate the reasonable contributions you're making. My "acknowledging" was just in response to the above poster's want for Mich fans to acknowledgeg what Dantonio does, which I thought I had. FWIW, I also have many friends with MSU degrees, it's just some fans that I deal with that are unbearable, as I think everyone would acknowledge also applies to some M fans unfortunately.

You had your best season in decades, got cocky, and got massacred by a team's 2nd stringers in a non-BCS bowl. We were coming off of a disappointing 7-5 record and basically in the middle of a coaching search. Do you understand why you're still referred to as "little brother"?
You said "bump this thread", like we're some sort of second-class citizens and this is RCMB. Go back to where you came from.
Luckily for Carr, he played Bobby Williams and John L Smith defenses. See how that goes? Can't simply forget history. MSU was also one of only two losses UM had last year, so again, can't just forget these things whenever it's convenient. If you want to lessen the team MSU put together than you have to lessen UM's Sugar Bowl season too.
who are the Spartans?
Jones looks like a beast. Luckily by the time he gets there, we'll have five donkey-riding monsters up front.
Terry looks pretty good in his highlight video, but I have no idea what the competition level there is. Seems to run well and pass decently, but not spectacular at either.
Damn, another recruiting win for dantonio. Oh wait...
good thing he sucks on the field too. oh wait...
How come RCMB gets such frequent mention here instead of TOC?

A much better Michigan State site, but with far fewer readers and crazy, fanatic, MSU fans.

The comments that I was responding to were all remeoved. Thus, I look like a random dick. Not just a dick. A random one.
That QB is a pretty good pickup, if you watch his film he looks like a natural thrower along with being athletic enough to kill teams that forget about him.
April 16th, 2012 at 10:34 PM ^
but I do know this: if Dantonio had been hired to "coach them up" for the movie, if would have been great instead of just pretty good.
I'm sure the rcmb would agree with me on this.
I like our Shane better
If Shane Jones' YouTube promo video is any indication, he's a good presence in the backfield - pretty fast, disruptive and a decent tackler. He wouldn't be a bad pickup for anyone really, if that's a fair representation of his skills now.
Damion Terry looks like he's got a pretty good arm on his video, but the video seemed to overemphasize the passing skills. The few running plays in the one I saw made me think he could burn a few teams.
I suppose I was disappointed that they did not choose to bring on another scholarship longsnapper. Obviously, depth is an issue at this position in East Lansing.
and Dantonio hasn't played a Mattison defense yet
Yes he has.
lolwut? He is 1-0 against a Mattison defense.
I'm sure he's solid, and Sparty will rightfully be pretty pumped to get him... but think of how spoiled we are at this point to think that he may not have made the cut in either this year's or last year's LB class... Hoke and Mattison have been absolutely crushing recruiting at LB, hopefully it will start paying dividends soon.
Who gives a shit? Can people stop the threads about these twats? Unless it's something funny and gives more reasons to laugh at state, I rather read about MICHIGAN.
Hey, as recently as today MGoSoftball was posting about the dominant softball wins over MSU. As recently as today he has called them "moo U" and "Spartina", so there you go. Talk to him about obsession.
April 16th, 2012 at 10:04 PM ^
Maybe because that's something that actually pertains DIRECTLY to Michigan. It was their 7th straight win and 5th straight shutout of state. Having shut out state 31-0 in their last 5 meetings.
While I don't care for the names because they aren't really clever, he has a right to call them that. We do as Michigan fans. I mean, look at their record in conference play.....
April 16th, 2012 at 10:47 PM ^
"Talk to him about obsession," says the MSU fan with an MGoBlog account.
I don't know if everyone who reads this board is aware, but once a year we play a game of football against Michigan State University. These 2 players are currently Juniors and in 2 years they will join the MSU football team.
It's not like this thread is about a water polo recruit picking Texas Tech.
Mattison has more national championships than Narduzzi so I'll repeat my statement of wait until they go up against a Mattison defense.
That has... nothing to do with anything. And they did go up against a Mattison defense last year, and won.
April 16th, 2012 at 11:11 PM ^
When does the defense become a "Mattison defense"? Mattison was the defensive coordinator last year when MSU won. We make fun of people for saying stuff like this on RCMB, but few of them go as far to deny that the game ever occurred. Essentially, stop. You're making us look bad. While you're at it, refer to the post about contacting recruits on twitter.
At least we beat VT, and did not play in a big ten third tier bowl game against a so-so Georgia team.
so-so? lol. The sports world unanimously agrees that UGA was a harder team to play than VT. No one out there was saying VT deserved a BCS game and it shouldn't have come down to the last minute. UM should have trucked that team by 50.

Wah wah wah. Go drown your BCS-rejection tears in your outback steak.
