Video: Friday Scrimmage Highlights

In addition to sucking, the mgoblue audio matched third party content on youtube, forcing me to lay a track over it and re-upload. Not sure why there's music in the first place. I'd rather listen to pads.

Every time I watch these practice highlights, I ponder whether the O is doing well when thy break off a big play, or if they are struggling when the play gets stuffed. Off the cuff, I'd say we aren't quite there yet when it comes push from the OL. The plays that worked well seemed to be misdirection/read plays. I'm still concerned about our ability to run a DoubleTight I, 32 Dive.

Me too...but I'm not too worried, because I doubt we'll run that play very much this year.  Next year, I think we'll see some good old power football, but not this year.  In fact, I think we might be even more shotgun-based than last year.

And next year, we'll have added some beasts to our O-Line that will have a year in the program...so I'm not too worried about the future of our I-form plays.

Compare to Alabama's spring game- Commence overanalyzing- Develop hugely inflated level of confidence- Eat out of Saban's hands.

In all seriousness I like seeing the mashups that make the offense look good rather than the defense, because I think the offense is going to have the harder time against Bama.  I have full faith in Mattison to get the defense up to speed.  Same with Borges but there's just more moving parts in the offense and a screw up can lead to a 14 point swing rather than just 7.  That said, I think they looked pretty crisp for a spring practice.

Vincent Smith had some really nice runs and Hayes had a beautiful run on that second to last play. I can't wait for the spring game next Saturday. Hopefully the weather is nicer than last year.

Did anyone else notice that in addition to Fitz, the rest of the guys taking handoffs were fighting hard and churning out extra yards.  Vincent Smith did a good job getting into the endzone with a few white jerseys on him. It's good to see the backs fighting through that first contact.

Craig Roh appears to be picking up his position very well.  The LBs looked pretty good too.  I'm actually pretty disappointed in our tackling from our secondary, Kovacs included.  I know it's a highlight video, but those guys are getting run over on every play.  That's a recipe for big plays against us...

Seriously, that was better than most of the bowl games I saw last season. Hoke talking about never making the mistake of complacency again after '97 and Mattison talking constantly about setting the bar is so evident in this video. We're gonna see something special from team 133 this fall, and something new from team 134.

Denard is Denard.  Which is obviously a good thing.  Especially if 2012 Denard has a few of the 2011 mistakes cleaned up.  Denard was probably 5-8 mistakes away from being a Heisman contender is 2011.

DG looks like a QB.  I think we'll be OK in 2013.

Rawls is starting to live up to his MGoBlog hype.  He's a load, but he looks a lot faster than I expected him to.  He had a couple plays where he burst through the hole, and another where he got clocked but didn't go down.  That's a great combination for a RB.

Hayes only had a handful of carries, but looked agile.  I think our RB spot is looking good for a while.

The RBs look great.  That is a deeper group than people think.  I love how Rawls run with such low pad level and forward force.  Hayes looks like a slasher too.  Borges used all the RBs and even FBs in this vid.

It looks like both Denard and Devin are more comfortable in the pocket this year, and in their decisions. The play where Denard runs around, then sets his feet, finds a guy and rifles it 30 yds to him was very nice. Its surprising to see them go live and hit Denard.  Russ Bellomy sighting!

These tapes are so offensive focused that you dont see much going on defensively.  It looks like they are getting multiple hats on the ball at times though.

I think it was on Rawls but not sure.  Rawls had a full head of steam and came to a complete stop.  That was impressive and could be huge on 3rd and short.  If this team can hold up on 3rd and short like last year's defense did I think we will be fine.
