Recruiting: Remaining Need, Interest in Michigan, Best Available?
So, I just can't get my mind around having 12 recruits already committed. This is completely unreal, and hard to fathom. That means we only have room for 10 or 11 more recruits in the 2013 class. Almost a year away til signing day. Unbelievable. Tremendous.
Having looked at Ace's "Hello" posts, and the interest from potential recruits still out there, I'm trying to think through how they match up. Magnus & Aquaman already put together a list of who they'd most like to see come to Michigan. There's no point in replicating the work they've already done. However, a corollary list would be remaining needs, and reasonable likelihood of coming to Michigan. Here's a list to start. I'd like to know three things:
- What needs are missing below?
- Who on the list below is unlikely to come to Michigan?
- Who has an offer in an area where we no longer have need. (for example, are we all set at TE, or would we still make room, say, for Breneman?)
Obviously, being a Michigan homer, I want just 5 star and four star recruits. But I also want a sense of who "realistically" might come to Michigan, and who would best fit the needs at Michigan.

Where do you work and are they hiring?

He must be a Professor at WCCC.

has a much higher calling!

O'Daniel is a LB. Mike McCray (Trotwood-Madison) is a top-50 LB who also has high interest in Michigan and doesn't have an Ohio offer yet.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:02 PM ^
Will edit accordingly.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:20 PM ^
Wow...those 3 LB would be better than our haul last year.
And Gedeon isn't even among those 3 on your list. Crazy.
I'm trying to not get too high on these LBs because it seems a little too good to be true. Hopefully it isn't.

Great family, brother at Harvard.

Neither is Alex Anzalone, whose recruitment has taken off in the last couple days. I like Anzalone a lot and would love to see him in Ann Arbor.
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:19 PM ^
Is it just me, or does anyone else feel it is bad form to compare potential recruits to current players? If it is just me, then disregard, if not, I hope our current LBs make you regret your underestimation of them.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:01 PM ^
I think he meant from a rating standpont. Either way, I took it more of "as good as our LB haul was last year, that would be even better" which isn't really a knock on the 2012 guys. People have made the same comment about out OL haul this year vs last year as well.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:07 PM ^
Meyer won't even offer guys ranked below 30.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:26 PM ^
Aquaman, O'Daniel is listed incorrectly as a RB on the Mgoblog 2013 Offer Board. You might want to edit that board, since you are now a mod, right?
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:46 PM ^
Anyone can edit that once they clear some threshold of points.
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:29 PM ^
You get an email saying you're a "trusted user" and you can edit the offer sheet, depth chart, hall of fame, ect.

Another safety... perferably a SS.
And latest updates (primarily from Dukes interview) suggests that they are taking 3 WRs in this class. Maybe a "slot" guy (as in a Borges 5'10" slot guy... not the 5'6" type of yesteryore)
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:14 PM ^
To me Dymonte Thomas seems more like a strong safety. But maybe I am wrong in that thought.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:21 PM ^
I think you are correct. I'm under the impression that we might not take another safety in this class unless he is someone like Cravens.

Is Jarrod Wilson a FS? From what I remember he is...
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:22 PM ^
They are definitely going after slot guys in the Gallon mold....which, if they are trying to emulate the Pats' offense, having a Wes Welker/Troy Brown out there would be beneficial.
Quick is a guy that fits the mold (though he's just a good WR in general IMO), LaRue as well(whose video I really really like....though he showboats a bit too much), and Onwualu all seem to be that shifty bubble screen type guy they might be looking for.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:32 PM ^
What about guys like Devon Allen and James Onwualu?
February 23rd, 2012 at 5:03 PM ^
is where I see this going as well, at least personnel-wise.
February 23rd, 2012 at 5:07 PM ^
let's cut Dileo and Gallon because they are midget slot guys of yesteryore. While we're at why don't we Sabanize everyone RR recruited.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:05 PM ^
How spoiled are we? When Dukes committed, I thought "why are we settling for a 3 *?"
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:10 PM ^
I don't think that was how anyone was at all, at least on MGoBlog. It seemed like he actually got a very positive reception here.
I think the general consensus is that he's pretty underrated at this point, and he has a high ceiling.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:26 PM ^
Agreed. The Scout analyst for Ohio is very high on Dukes. We just got in on him early.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:37 PM ^
A 6'5" ceiling! HEYO!
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:59 PM ^
The general consensus on mgoboard is that he's pretty underrated which like this is a fan site. It doesn't count for much. I personally doubt he's that underrated or OSU would have offered. I'm not someone who can break down a kid's game from a highlight package, but you don't have to be to tell that he has trouble getting separation. I'm not complaining about the commit, it's perfectly fine since we'll probably take another two receivers. But it sure would be nice to get an early impact gamebreaking type receiver in this class and Dukes doesn't look like that guy.

Anyone that is compared to Hemingway is a 5-star recruit in my book.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:36 PM ^
Setting aside the fact that anyone can be compared to anyone the Hemingway comparison is pretty lazy. Hem was an absolute freak at coming down with the ball. There aren't many people like him. Also Dukes is a long strider, unlike Hemingway. I doubt he'll be able to accelerate/plant like Hemingway could. He is a lot taller, though.
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:27 PM ^
So any player Urban doesn't offer can't be underrated, even if he isn't a great fit for their spread offense? Makes a lot of sense to me.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:11 PM ^
1) Your iteration makes no sense because you butchered what I said.
2) Urban's offense starts 2 outside wide receivers. You know how many outside wide receivers we'll start when we're playing BorgesBall? 2.
3) Jaron Dukes isn't any player. He's from Columbus. If he looks like a likely big time player, it's strange Ohio didn't offer.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:36 PM ^
The thing about the star system for WR's is that they typically favor the fast "playmaking" receivers. Outside of a few physical freaks, a receiver who is 6'5" is usually not going to have the speed of a Diggs-like receiver, so he won't get the 5*.
Our coaching staff knows what kind of guys they want for their offense and filled the need for a big outside receiver with Dukes, and due to the early offer, I would guess that we are in no way settling. I can't wait to see Dukes with a Michigan jersey on jumping over little corners in the back of the endzone.
February 23rd, 2012 at 5:20 PM ^
Then we can continue to run the "Chuck and Pray" developed by Denard and Hemingway this season.
At 6'5" with Devin and Shane tossing it up for grabs, I like the addition of Jaron Dukes.
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:48 PM ^
seemed trollish.
It was a gut reaction, knowing only his stars. Heard a good run down on WTKA on him and am higher on him now.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:06 PM ^
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:08 PM ^
And maybe Laremy Tunsil, although I dont know how realistic he is..
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:12 PM ^
Supposedly his most recent top 3 list does not include Michigan. I would not get my hopes up for him. He seems like a heavy Florida lean.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:16 PM ^
I've never thought he would really consider Michigan . . . do you have info otherwise?
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:18 PM ^
Nope. I remember reading somewhere on here a week or two ago to not count him out, and that he liked Michigan. But I just did a bit of research after Wolverine's post and it looks like his top 3 is Georgia, UF, and Alabama.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:19 PM ^
He had some interest early on when we offered. Other than that Florida seems like they are a leader by a wide margin.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:09 PM ^
add CB Gareon Conley.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:14 PM ^
I do not see Kendall Fuller on the list as a CB. He is visiting for the Spring game and is #4 overall by Rivals
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:19 PM ^
Isn't he the one with a brother at VT? I thought he was coming along for the ride with his buddy O'Daniel, but he wasn't really considering Michigan.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:22 PM ^
Fuller has 3 brothers that go/went to VT. It'd be great to have him but I don't think it happens.
He said that won't affect him but that's quite the streak. Sorry if I'm being Debbie Downer in this thread.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:25 PM ^
He does have a brother at VT and may well end up there. However he has stated that his family connections at VT will not influence his college choice and anything can happen once he's are on campus.
EDIT: 2 brothers currently enrolled at VT. Sorry
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:24 PM ^
Yes, Fuller does have a brother at VT. I think there is some interest in Michigan, not sure how much. I think there might be more interest than just coming along for the ride.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:10 PM ^
He has a relationship with Hoke back from his days at SDSU. Fuller is an outside shot for CB, wouldn't be surprised if he ended up with us but wouldn't be surprised if he didn't.
February 23rd, 2012 at 4:17 PM ^
People said that USC might be hard to beat, but anything can happen when we get him on campus.
