Grand Rapids CC discontinues football program
Looks like Grand Rapids Community College has discontinued its football program:

What now for Demar Dorsey?

Guy can't catch a break. That's the only community college fb program in Michigan right?
January 9th, 2012 at 7:00 PM ^
Actually Grand Rapids CC is the only JC school in the tri-state area (MI, OH, IN).

What the hell are you talking about? Obviously you know nothing my friend.
K-Zoo CC has the Hornets. They had 7 players make the All-MIA team. My favorite is Mike Page who is a personal friend. The kid is a beast, too bad he wasnt big enough for us. He thought about playing for M but would have only played special teams.

Kalamazoo is not a JC, it's a small liberal arts college and is NCAA D3 for athletics. The JC down there is Kalamzoo Valley CC and has no football program.

That poor guy can't seem to catch a break. Hopefully he can transfer somewhere close and continue his career.

Poor Demar Dorsey.
January 9th, 2012 at 8:51 PM ^
I still say DD ends up now with RR at Univ of AZ.
AND I hope both do very well.
January 9th, 2012 at 3:49 PM ^
and you thought TP was toxic for football coaches...

I can't help but wonder, what if? What if we gave him the chance to prove he's grown up? Everyone makes mistakes (though not always of the same degree or nature), but I thought it was a person's ability to learn and grow from their mistakes that proved their maturity, and ultimately what kind of person they truly are. If we don't give him a chance because there are no schollies or because we truly don't believe he's changed, then that's fine. But if we don't give him a chance because we are protecting an image, then I think that is pretty sad. Universities are meant to educate and prepare young people for life. I just don't see the problem with giving a young man a second chance. He obviously wants to be here.

I do think his simple desire to play for Michigan alone does not mean Michigan should let him in. If a simple desire to work hard and succeed at Michigan was all it took to get in enrollment would be 150,000. If the University doesn't think he can ultimately succeed here, then they're well within their right. We don't really know all the fact surrounding his academics and how that plays into the school's decision.
I wish him the best, and hope that he does enough to make Michigan believe that he can succeed here.
January 9th, 2012 at 4:08 PM ^
I'd take a kid with a desire to work hard and succeed at Michigan over ... Let's use ole Adolfus Washington
“I know all these schools athletically can offer me the same thing. The academic support at Ohio State, there is no way you can fail. Even if you’re giving minimal effort there is no way you can fail."
I'd rather see Dorsey on the team than Stonum as of right now.
January 9th, 2012 at 6:23 PM ^
LOL, where did you find the Adolfus quote?
January 9th, 2012 at 7:24 PM ^
he gave it in an interview right after he committed
January 9th, 2012 at 8:46 PM ^
I LOVE that quote, it just says it all.
January 9th, 2012 at 9:18 PM ^
I think you'll get at least half your wish because Stonum is probably finished. We could really use Dorsey but don't know if that is even within the realm of possibility.
January 9th, 2012 at 4:17 PM ^
A desire to work hard and succeed AND a 4.3 40 would whittle down the list really fast.
January 9th, 2012 at 4:08 PM ^
I'm pretty sure you don't know why he isn't in AA. It wasn't about character, it was about his going to a very suspect online HS to become academically eligible. It didn't pass the smell test with admissions here or anywhere else.
This was a bad break for DD. I've been rooting for him to get to UM. Hopefully he still has a chance.
January 9th, 2012 at 4:10 PM ^
Sad to see another program get dropped. Sure it sucks for Dorsey, but it also sucks for the rest of the kids on that team who probably won't have another chance to play competitive football.
January 9th, 2012 at 4:39 PM ^
Did anyone see him play this past season? If so, is this kid truly a 5 star caliber talent?
I would imagine a 4.3-40 are the only numbers he needs to get into some D-1 schools!
January 9th, 2012 at 4:43 PM ^
This is Demar's path and if he wills it, he's got what it takes to be a success. Continued well wishes, Demar; pray and keep fighting the good fight!

I thought GRCC had a good history of football and I thought they had just won a national title of some sort this decade
January 9th, 2012 at 5:35 PM ^
I live in Grand Rapids, and GRCC is always dominant in football. This is a big surprise. Lack of funds I'm sure
January 9th, 2012 at 4:47 PM ^
I know public schools in Michigan have larger fish to fry, but they don't support football enough for my liking. There are reportedly now no community college programs in the state and the MHSAA's restrictions on football activities have been a joke for decades.
If you want to know why Ohio produces a talent pool in football disproportionately larger than the one in Michigan, the difference in school system support is the first place to look.
January 9th, 2012 at 5:02 PM ^
I'd agree with many here that we simply don't know DD's character, present academic situation, etc. Having said that, you just gotta' love this guy's desire to be a Wolverine. I'd love to see this kid come in, make a difference on the field while succeeding academically too. I have no idea if that would happen because I simply don't know enough about him. But what a great story it would be if he were capable of doing so and more importantly, did it. If he has that kind of potential, I hope he gets a shot. If not at Michigan, than somewhere he can thrive.

Out of the defacto Junior College National Championship game this year. There are several bowls for the Junior College teams, and for some reason GRCC wasnt picked, although on paper they were the more appealing team and the higher ranked. Heard they travel no one (Fans) though... I read in the link above that Coach Anneese "Sudden departure" is one (Of several) reasons for the discontuining the program, I havent heard or seen anything as to where he may be going which makes me wonder.
January 9th, 2012 at 5:43 PM ^
Anneese is taking over at Ferris State University. I wonder if he will take Dorsey with him.
January 9th, 2012 at 9:17 PM ^
Also ran into some issues with their players and landlords. Apparently there was some misunderstanding about a housing arrangement that caused a lot of players to get evicted.
January 9th, 2012 at 5:22 PM ^
....that he still can get a shot at getting into Michigan based on academics. I don't know how he is doing at GRCC, but it would be great for him if his grades made it possible for him to transfer here. I think that, if he were to come here, then the best way is to come by it honestly, and if he couldn't get in, then I wish him well wherever he goes.
I think he would be a great addition to Team 133 or 134, however it worked, of course. That blows that GRCC is discontinuing football - it seems like Dorsey gets the short end of the stick more often than not, and that's unfortunate.
January 9th, 2012 at 5:27 PM ^
GRCC is always one of the best junior colleges one could go to, and always has a great football program. I go there, and every time i saw a football player they were really down about not being invited to a bowl game this season.
You can't help but feel for that football team. I'm sure quite a few of them will transfer to a place where they can play.
January 9th, 2012 at 9:15 PM ^
I was hoping to see GRCC in the Capital One Bowl
January 9th, 2012 at 6:14 PM ^
Oooooh, let do it!

January 9th, 2012 at 6:27 PM ^
Lansing CC opens a program starting next year.
January 9th, 2012 at 7:17 PM ^
...in the greater Lansing area with football programs.
January 9th, 2012 at 8:06 PM ^
And I know someone who coaches the minor league football team in Lansing. I believe it just started 2 years ago.

Funny his name was brought up. I googled him, and found a GREAT thread about him, highlighting some personal photos of him and his "squad" that he kicks it with. Apparently, drugs, guns, and gang signs are common place in his life.
January 9th, 2012 at 9:14 PM ^
Buddy is/ was on staff there. He pretty much said the same thing. Kid is bad news
January 9th, 2012 at 11:57 PM ^
As somebody from the inner city myself I still kick it with people in whose lives drugs, guns, and gang signs, are common place... 10 years after graduating M with a 3.85 and several years after law school.
You can't condemn someone for not turning their back on home.
January 9th, 2012 at 8:28 PM ^
why wouldn't he be transferring at the end of the academic year to a d1 school?
January 9th, 2012 at 10:28 PM ^
Why can't Dorsey come to the good side after a year of CC?
January 9th, 2012 at 11:10 PM ^
Also, he cut off his dreads, I am no longer intrigued by him.
