Pop Evil replaced the Victors???
As many are aware, The Team took the field yesterday to a (previously unknown) local heavy metal band, Pop Evil. Without getting too into the weeds of "are they a good band or not" (one could always check and learn that they play at awesome venues like "O'Shea's Irish Pub"), I'm curious as to thoughts on Dave Brandon's decision to replace the Michigan Marching Band with Pop Evil for the team's entrance.
Now, I'm no historian (I know we have some here) but I assume The Victors has been played for the team's entrance for ages. I imagine this is the first time the team has touched the banner to a song written, when...last week? If Michigan State can rise up to avoid a logo re-vamp, Michigan should be able to rise up to avoid a MMB replacement. There are certain Michigan traditions that shouldn't be tossed away. "The Victors" as the entry song is one such tradition. I realize that on TV, it sounded as if The Victors was playing, but that was after the team had entered.
Am I alone is finding this change to be such an offense? Thoughts of the people...?

And I'm sure DB will have that worked out next week!

So you think it was a mistake? I wasn't there, but the OP makes it sound like it was clearly planned. I had no idea this went down from watching on TV. But it kind of chaps my ass.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:07 AM ^
It was defiantly planned. They did it again after the first rain delay too.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:25 AM ^
Was the planning defiant or definite? Either way, that sucks.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:59 AM ^
I don't believe the band was in the stadium when they came back out after the first rain delay.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:16 AM ^
I agree its dumb. I'm doing my part and emailing DB about it, and I suggest others do the same. You would be surprised how much influence you can have on this kind of thing when you take initiative and try to do something about it.
Edit: looks like my rage is a bit misplaced. To be honest, The Victors was barely audible over the crowd noise so I didn't hear it in the stadium, but whateva. I still have Pop Evil, though.

... this is the right approach to solving the problem (writing letters). Whining incessantly on message boards filled with like-minded individuals will do nothing but frustrate you further.
Everybody who hates it -- start a Facebook campaign or an email writing campaign. Get it in front of the local media so it has to be addressed.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:33 AM ^
That's a good point. A letter shall be sent. I'll include a copy on this thread later.

I like you

You are my hero.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:03 AM ^
I could be wrong, but what I remembered was that the piped in music was played as the team assembled in the tunnel (as has been done for the past several years) but once they actually ran out, the piped in music was cut as the band played the victors (which is barely audible above the cheers of the fans, at least from where I'm sitting). It didn't seem different to me.
Anyone else there remember one way or the other?
September 4th, 2011 at 11:07 AM ^
Im with you. The piped music was cut well before the team started their run, the victors definitely played when the players touched the banner. I actually kind of liked it.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:29 AM ^
Nope. That's just not how it happened. It appeared that way on TV, but the team was mostly past the banner when the band started. The band was standing silently as the team emerged from the tunnel. Zero doubt about that.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:35 AM ^
Nope that's how it was. I was at the game and the piped in music was cut before the team started their run to the banner.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:43 AM ^
That's wrong. At the game, the piped in music was cut as the team ran and Victors was played.
If anything what you are bitching about is a timing issue.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:44 AM ^
No...the band definitely played The Victors when they ran out. I only heard Pop Evil once and that was during the first half highlights.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:52 AM ^
You could still hear Pop Evil being blasted as the team was running out.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:56 AM ^
Not from where I was sitting.
September 4th, 2011 at 12:57 PM ^
could please state where you're seats are located, maybe we can determine if it's a matter of distance the sound had to travel.

Lots of timing issues!
From my seats we didn't find out the game had ended until 3/4 the way through the 4th quarter.
Michigan was up 48-10 thanks to a blocked punt and blocked FG, both returned for TDs by Herron.

+1 to you, sir!
September 4th, 2011 at 1:11 PM ^
Pop Evil played as they ran, and was cut off when about half of the team was out of the tunnel. Then and only then did The Victors start. I was seriously pissed.
September 4th, 2011 at 1:13 PM ^
So the kid in the band is lying?
September 4th, 2011 at 8:09 PM ^
If you watch the video in the full game thread, you'll see what I mean.
September 4th, 2011 at 8:11 PM ^
I originally thought you meant that the band didn't even start playing. They did, but the PopEvil was still going through the speakers. I guess that extra second or two really upset some people.
September 4th, 2011 at 4:19 PM ^
My seats are on the east sideline (visitors) and your recollection is exactly what I witnessed. Terrible. Terrible. Terrible.
September 4th, 2011 at 12:25 PM ^
and The Victors definitely played as the team was hitting the banner. Pop Evil could be heard before hand but the Victors quickly overcame it and the whole crowd was singing, which means they heard it too.

I wasn't at the game so I can only deduce that you are mistaken, but you were the only one to mention this issue last night and the first one to mention it this morning. People who were at the game think you are wrong and the people who seem to be the most enraged are those who admitted they weren't present.
September 4th, 2011 at 4:21 PM ^
Well...your not being at the game makes you a pretty poor source. You also seem to have missed the many comments from folks who saw and heard the same thing I did...and many folks appear upset.
September 4th, 2011 at 4:29 PM ^
I was at the game. I look for things like this. Your recollection is completely wrong. RAWK stopped as soon as they ran out of the tunnel, MMB started playing The Victors.
September 4th, 2011 at 6:30 PM ^
September 4th, 2011 at 11:10 AM ^
Yes I believe youre right. Also the piped in music isn't over bearing during the game- I thought it was a good mix but mostly MMB. Then again I was right next to the band but definitely felt no shortage of MMB.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:14 AM ^
That is definitely correct. Pop Evil was cut off as the team ran onto the field and Victors was played. I could carely hear the victors as well due to the fans cheering.

September 4th, 2011 at 11:27 AM ^
im not going to argue if pop evil is good or bad, but it isnt metal, its rock. inflames, sepultura, opeth, those are metal band
September 4th, 2011 at 1:00 PM ^
I was there and my impression was that the team was out of the tunnel and the first players had reached the banner before they cut from Pop Evil to The Victors. I thought the whole thing was very blah. For the record I don't actually hate Pop Evil -- I'd take them over Freakbass any day of the week and twice on Saturday -- but I'd much rather hear the Victors.
If they've got to use the Rawk -- and I'm not all that bothered by it -- they should play their Pop Evil, make the switch to the Marching Band, and THEN let the players out of the tunnel.
September 4th, 2011 at 5:20 PM ^
But they had started running, then it cut right before they hit the banner, then the band went.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:04 AM ^
The victors was played when the team actually ran out of the tunnel. The anticipation pump up song was Pop Evil. I think they just let it play over a little.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:07 AM ^
Ya but it played over just a little too long, I mean I was getting ready to pull a Brian Kelly. Thankfully they cut it out.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:05 AM ^
Just say no to Pop Evil and stadium rawk music!
September 4th, 2011 at 11:12 AM ^
I don't mind it and neither did the majority of the students. Different strokes for different folks. I also noticed the stadium got louder when the rain chased away the blue hairs.
September 4th, 2011 at 12:17 PM ^
The students don't know and therefore cannot appreciate tradition... and as students it is their duty to learn and our duty to teach them!
September 4th, 2011 at 12:29 PM ^
and I will reply with the point that those that were getting into it the most were the seniors in section 27/26, those that know the tradition the most. I even tailgate with members of the alumni band and I was suprised to hear that the majority of them actually liked the Pop Evil song. I told one of them that I was ashamed that I actually like "In the Big House." It is one of those songs that grows on me the more I listen to it.
Don't belittle those that like the song. It is a different with different taste. Those tastes are no better than yours. They are just different. I grew up with Nirvana and Pearl Jam, and nothing grates me more than someone that grew up in the 50's telling me how terrible those bands are compared to Pop Bands of the 50's.
September 4th, 2011 at 1:43 PM ^
And I'm grateful for everyone bringing their in game experience to this message board. I'm stuck in Seattle all this year (summer vacation burned through the travel money) and I'm desparate for the live experience of Hoke era football.
