01/28/2018 - 10:28pm I've thought about this a bit over the years.

I always figured 1970 would be the ideal year to be born as a Detroit sports fan.

You have:

1976: Summer of The Bird.  You're probably a young kid just getting into baseball at this time and the dude captures your imagination and fascination.

1984: Tigers.

1984-1990: Buildup of the Bad Boys.  That had to be the most satisfying titles of all time.  You go from losing in the first round, second round, first round, conference finals, NBA finals (the latter two in heartbreaking fashion), to winning.  Great life lessons in their struggle.

The Lions actually win a playoff game in your early 20s!

Assuming you go to Michigan, you get Desmond Howard, the 89 title, and the Fab Five all during your 4-5 years.

12/06/2016 - 12:57am Beilein sets - killer set

You might remember this from a few years back.

Half Court Hoops listed this as 25 UCLA DHO.  You have the 5 making a UCLA cut off the 2, who pops open to the top if their defender helps too much off the 5.  This progresses into a dribble handoff with the 3.

05/03/2016 - 12:10pm Usage

How are you calculating USG?  Rate seems to differ from kenpom or something b-ref would use.

03/03/2016 - 12:55am Jordan Morgan

Developed after his redshirt year. What are you even talking about? He was outstanding for us down the stretch in 2011.

03/03/2016 - 12:53am Right

Having the top offense in B
CBB and a top 25 one this year isn't efficient.

02/17/2016 - 12:59am This is absurd

2 Big Ten titles in the past 5 years.

2 Elite 8's

1 Final Four

Since having his own players, Beilein is 66-38 in Big Ten play.

12/14/2015 - 10:59pm Sample size

38 is really small. Let's see after 120 attempts.

12/13/2015 - 11:04am The Lineage continues

Merritt & Lee to Person & Bartlestein to Dakich.  The bench mob has a role.

08/24/2015 - 1:30pm You're right

The Big Ten can't hold a candle to the Pac 12.  It's been worse for 5 years now.  Casteel would have been fine, his defenses have been in the top 30 in CFB pretty much every year he's been a DC.

03/18/2015 - 1:41pm Academic Gameplan

I'm really curious as to what it entails and how it differs from what we had in place before.  Seems all coaches place a premium on academics, but I'm not familiar with the classes and schedule the athletes take, along with what sort of support system they have.  Can anyone shine light on this?

Moreso on Baxter's plan, can it be applied for regular students?  He talks about the syllabus and taking notes... what does he suggest that deviates from what others suggest?  Is it a gameplan just to get good grades, or a gameplan to give the student-athlete full knowledge in that class (without emphasis on grades)?

03/13/2015 - 7:44pm 2014 Charlotte

Michigan scored on a BLOB play to take the lead late.  You can't remember one?

03/13/2015 - 7:42pm 2013 @ home against Illinois

First play of the second half, McGary got a wide open layup.  You obviously haven't been watching if you haven't noticed one post-timeout/half play that's been open.

Be a better fan.

03/13/2015 - 1:25pm Agree to an extent

Beilein obviously tweaks his offense year to year, lessening or emphasizing the role of certain positions.  There does seem to be a common theme, but some of your positions and descriptions of those positions are off.

Walton, Burke, Morris, and Spike have always been ones.  These are the guys bringing the ball up the floor and initiating the offense.  They run a ton of ball screens, moreso in 2011-2013.

Twos have been Stu, Tim in 2013, Levert/MAAR/some Irvin.  They'll run up with the one and have some primary ball duties, but also some screening.  They'll throw the pass on the pindown.  Run the middle PnR on the screen the screener action.  Overall, they're a blend between the 1 and 3.

Threes start from the corner where they can use their right hand as the dominant hand.  This could be Stauskas and THJ early in their careers where they sit in the corner drawing a man out of help.  Or Nik last year where he sprinted into ballscreen action or cut backdoor.  (Nik did play the 2 occasionally when they were bothering him mid-season).

Fours start where their left hand can be dominant.  Think Novak and Chatman in the future.  The action, the evolving offensive structure, and the fact that GR3 wasn't strong with his left hand have resulted in less ball screens.  They'll be used in pindowns, coming off the shuffle screen, and drawing help away on the strongside when the 3 (Irvin, Nik) is coming off a PnR.

Fives are pretty obvious, but it'll be interesting to see how this evolves with Donnal/Wagner.

In summation, here's a generalized view of this year:

1 - Spike 2 - MAAR 3 - Irvin 4 - Dawkins 5 - whoever.

1 - Spike 2 - Irvin 3 - Dawkins 4 - Chatman 5 - whoever

Seem to be our most popular lineups.  Dawkins runs more PnR as the season has gone on.  But he'll do this as the 3 (as I type this, he hit Doyle while playing the 4)

Different stimulus most likely.

I'm a runner and rarely lift. If I were to begin a lifting cycle, I'd see improvement no matter how objectively efficient my routine was.

Guessing Tolbert is working in a different fashion than Wellman and we're seeing a quick improvement in certain areas that will plateau over time.

02/26/2015 - 12:20am Dakich has found his calling.

Dakich has found his calling.  He'll be coaching someday.  He's no longer a Bench Mob member, now just calls out plays and motivates.

Donnal won't play it for us. So can't see him moving back to it.

01/30/2015 - 6:03pm Ice/Locking the Rails

Is a 4th option. Ohio State and the Bulls are both advocates of that strategy. See Zack Novak's interview on umhoops for an example.

01/08/2015 - 7:53pm Awful slate

Burning money if you get started with the NFL this weekend.  Much freer money in NBA, golf.

10/17/2014 - 6:58pm He does it every year.

He does it every year.

10/08/2014 - 1:00am lol bulk stats

Too high:  Irvin, Walton rebounds.  Donnal points.

Too low: Chatman points, rebounds.  Walton points.  Levert assists.

10/05/2014 - 10:08pm Good lord

I need help getting up in the morning tomorrow.  Someone needs to hold my hand as I grind through the work day.  Some emotional support in the late stages of my run would be nice.

10-10 in the Pac 12 is what... 14-6 in the Big Ten?  13-7?

10/03/2014 - 7:11am Scoring defense

Scoring defense sucks.  Use better measures such as YPP, FEI, etc.  Might as well say Verlander has been great with his 15 wins this year.

08/07/2014 - 5:11pm Greg Oden

Oden was born in a time when hitting your woman was socially acceptable.

03/28/2014 - 8:55pm I want to say

Morris was a Michigan offer.  IIRC, it was 3 offers to Demetrius Jackson, Walton, and Morris.  Whoever committed first got the spot.

03/27/2014 - 12:43pm Putting people on blast...

I love it.

What really saddens me is the players are from a similar class of many of the commenters.  But these people side with the administrators and their own rooting interest, rather than the players trying to negotiate.

Why don't people understand that you don't need to be a fully polished product for it to be a great decision to go pro?

02/25/2014 - 9:06pm I've been wondering this too.

In theory, MSU should be really good.  Senior PG, Valentine and Dawson decent complementary pieces, two top 20 picks.  But looking back, that's not an impressive preseason.  Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Texas are solid wins.  But nothing to write home about.  UNC waxing them at home isn't a good look.  Struggled against Columbia and Oakland.  Empirical evidence suggests a healthy MSU isn't a final four favorite.

01/24/2014 - 7:28pm (full Iowa game)

You'll see Michigan run that wide pindown 4 times in the first 6 minutes.  Designed to put Stauskas's defender in a bind.  You see Iowa denying the catch, which opens up the backcut (which Michigan didn't really exploit).  But anyway, Stauskas by the third time seeing it has figured out how to use White's positioning against him.
