Pop Evil replaced the Victors???

Submitted by dahblue on

As many are aware, The Team took the field yesterday to a (previously unknown) local heavy metal band, Pop Evil.  Without getting too into the weeds of "are they a good band or not" (one could always check and learn that they play at awesome venues like "O'Shea's Irish Pub"), I'm curious as to thoughts on Dave Brandon's decision to replace the Michigan Marching Band with Pop Evil for the team's entrance.

Now, I'm no historian (I know we have some here) but I assume The Victors has been played for the team's entrance for ages.  I imagine this is the first time the team has touched the banner to a song written, when...last week?  If Michigan State can rise up to avoid a logo re-vamp, Michigan should be able to rise up to avoid a MMB replacement.  There are certain Michigan traditions that shouldn't be tossed away.  "The Victors" as the entry song is one such tradition.  I realize that on TV, it sounded as if The Victors was playing, but that was after the team had entered.

Am I alone is finding this change to be such an offense?  Thoughts of the people...?

I agree its dumb. I'm doing my part and emailing DB about it, and I suggest others do the same. You would be surprised how much influence you can have on this kind of thing when you take initiative and try to do something about it.

Edit: looks like my rage is a bit misplaced. To be honest, The Victors was barely audible over the crowd noise so I didn't hear it in the stadium, but whateva. I still have Pop Evil, though.

... this is the right approach to solving the problem (writing letters).  Whining incessantly on message boards filled with like-minded individuals will do nothing but frustrate you further.

Everybody who hates it -- start a Facebook campaign or an email writing campaign.  Get it in front of the local media so it has to be addressed.

Seriously. I know a guy who was an intern with a local senator, and I asked him how many people had to call in about an issue for it to become a priority for them. He answered "10." You would be surprised how few people actually take action, and how much of an impact you can have by doing so.

I could be wrong, but what I remembered was that the piped in music was played as the team assembled in the tunnel (as has been done for the past several years) but once they actually ran out, the piped in music was cut as the band played the victors (which is barely audible above the cheers of the fans, at least from where I'm sitting).  It didn't seem different to me.

Anyone else there remember one way or the other?

Lots of timing issues!

From my seats we didn't find out the game had ended until 3/4 the way through the 4th quarter.

Michigan was up 48-10 thanks to a blocked punt and blocked FG, both returned for TDs by Herron.

I wasn't at the game so I can only deduce that you are mistaken, but you were the only one to mention this issue last night and the first one to mention it this morning. People who were at the game think you are wrong and the people who seem to be the most enraged are those who admitted they weren't present.

I'm getting irritated with all the hate for "Pop Evil" and their song "In the Big House". I get sick of people on here trying to tell me what kind of music is great or isn't. I can't stand country (that is ALL ear rape) or the complete crap they call "college" music. I like "Pop Evil" and "Creed" and I have nothing against "Nickleback" (although I don't own any of their stuff) 80's hair metal is my all time favorite and I make no apologies for it. We all have different tastes in music, tv shows, movies and other things. What we do all have is one thing in common, our love for the Wolverines. So you've got your opinions and I've got mine they're all just as valid. I like "In the Big House" and I'm really excited a hot up and coming band with a top hit "The Monster You Made Me" are huge fans of my/our team. There I got that off my chest, I feel better.

I was there and my impression was that the team was out of the tunnel and the first players had reached the banner before they cut from Pop Evil to The Victors.  I thought the whole thing was very blah.  For the record I don't actually hate Pop Evil -- I'd take them over Freakbass any day of the week and twice on Saturday -- but I'd much rather hear the Victors.

If they've got to use the Rawk -- and I'm not all that bothered by it -- they should play their Pop Evil, make the switch to the Marching Band, and THEN let the players out of the tunnel.

The victors was played when the team actually ran out of the tunnel.  The anticipation pump up song was Pop Evil.  I think they just let it play over a little.

and I will reply with the point that those that were getting into it the most were the seniors in section 27/26, those that know the tradition the most. I even tailgate with members of the alumni band and I was suprised to hear that the majority of them actually liked the Pop Evil song. I told one of them that I was ashamed that I actually like "In the Big House." It is one of those songs that grows on me the more I listen to it.

Don't belittle those that like the song. It is a different with different taste. Those tastes are no better than yours. They are just different. I grew up with Nirvana and Pearl Jam, and nothing grates me more than someone that grew up in the 50's telling me how terrible those bands are compared to Pop Bands of the 50's.
