OT: Looking for a good movie
So I'm looking for a good movie, now before you tell me I should watch the A-Team or something, you should know I'm kind of an indie movie buff. The last two newer movies I've seen and liked were The Sunset Limited and The Vicious Kind.
Thanks for your help board.
EDIT: Jesus I can't spell today.
but if not, Pan's Labyrinth.
District B13
The Painted Veil
Not sure if they're indy enough for ya though
Watch it.
Darjeeling Limited if you haven't seen it. Wed Anderson directed with Adrien Brody, Owen Wilson, and Jason Schwartzman. Very very good.
the last rites of ransom pride...a newerish western with dwight yoakam
If you are looking for a new western then rent True Grit, not as good as the original but still good.
The Machinist with Christian Bale,he did this movie in between Equilibrium and Batman Begins so the had to gain and lose a lot of weight in 3-4 yrs. crazy
Bridesmaids
Despite the girly title and theme of the movie, I actually found it to be pretty hilarious.
Gonna check this out, sounds like a pretty rad movie.
Perfect selection for Dark Blue, it seems.
Anthony LaPaglia, Danny Aiello. About Frank Pesce, the first winner of the New York Lottery.
Check out Moon. It's a great movie and it isn't very sci-fiy if you're worried about it.
i was going to suggest this, so i'll just second it. if there is one time people need to take what I say seriously this is it.
also scott pilgrim vs. the world, but make sure you watch the alternate ending, it is waaaaaaay better.
also brotherhood of the wolf is really good, but its in french so im not sure you will like it, very action-y
and if you want space sci-fi check out sunshine with cillian murphy
This is a great movie, but I think Dark Blue would have to watch a fair amount of the tv series first.
Oldboy
Bunny and the Bull
Oldboy is great but at the same time one of those, "oh god why did I just watch that" kind of movie; Audition is in the same boat.
Oldboy was one of the most horrifying movies I've ever seen. Really well made, but just awful.
My suggestions to the OP:
- Leon / The Professional (I never have figured out what the ACTUAL name of that movie is.)
- Micmacs
- If for some reason you haven't already watched "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels" and/or "Snatch," do so immediately.
You guys make it sound like it's Samurai Princess or something (last I checked, also available streaming on Netflix - not recommended). Maybe it's because of the "twist" in the end? If that one little detail was changed, I can see the movie not being as horrifying, as you say. But I still think it's good and worth watching.
For something much less offensive but still Asian, I'd suggest to the OP some Kurosawa films like Seven Samurai and Yojimbo.
Oldboy is great. It's very intense and graphic but it has my favorite scene in a sushi bar ever. About 6 years after seeing it, my friends and I still reference that.
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is not as good but it is still alright. I haven't seen Lady Vengeance yet.
so i actually go and find this on netflix per your suggestion and it's available for streaming but apparently they only stream the dubbed version instead of korean w/ subtitles. unless anyone knows a way around this i guess i'll have to get the physical dvd. bummer.
A good bit of the movie is narration in the main character's head, so a dubbed version really isn't that bad because no one's lips are moving. I think you should try it out and see if you can handle the dubbing.
Super with Ranin Wilson and Ellen Page.
Just watched The Black Swan. It's kind of a indie movie. It was great. Portman was spectacular.
If you're into trippy movies check out anything by darren aronofsky especially his first movie pi.
I think they should revamp high school health curriculum to just include a screening of Requiem for a Dream.
Great movie though, one of the best I've ever seen.
It might be one of my favorite movies of all time but holy crap, it's a hard one to watch. It's so well done that it's hard to watch the end of that movie.
IIRC it's the only film to ever get two standing ovations at Cannes. It lives up to that, but you're right, you have to be in just the right mood to even sit through Requiem.
The last minute or so might be the saddest I've seen in a movie not involving mass death (the end of Saving Private Ryan is worse, for example).
High School health class should use this movie as drug deterrant. Great movie, and great acting all around especially with Ellen Burstyn.
If you wanna go the dark route, Requiem for a Dream is your ticket. HOLY SHIT i needed to wash my eyes and brain out after that one.
Black Swan was very good and Portman was excellent, but the parallels to The Wrestler were a bit too similar IMHO.
"I Spit on your Grave." If the wife or G/F is around you might wanna check out another film.
Should have won best picture....
Extract - Mike Judge movie with Mila Kunis and Jason Bateman
Flo was voted the most annoying tv personality of the past three years.
I remember that guy.
A classic...also Deuce Bigelow because I am in it.
Nailin' Palin?
Way too big of a chick flick for any one man to handle!
I'm not sure if this is "indie" enough, but if you're into dark comedies, you need to check out "World's Greatest Dad" w/ Robin Williams... the writing is top notch and it is absolutely hysterical.
I don't think it ever came out in theatres b/c it isn't exactly a "mainstream" comedy
One of the funniest movies I've ever seen for sure.
city of god
