We are all so lucky.  You…

We are all so lucky.  You correctly pointed out what Brian's creation meant to all of us. However, you left out the additional gift we get with writers like you, Seth, BronxBlue, etc... Truly great writers.

Brian is so unique. I had never heard of David Foster Wallace, but after his piece I looked him up. Glad I did.

As we age, we all experience life differently yet there are so many similarities. Your piece reminded me of how awesome life is, the ups and downs.   Thanks.

Once again, I am amazed by the quality of the content we receive for free. As a grammar challenged person, it is like magic.

My "MgoBlog" moment was the Roy Roundtree fumble against Illinois. I swore I was done. No more MgoBlog, no more Michigan football.  Within a week, I bookmarked the site again.

BTW Desmond Was Tripped, you have a top 10 moniker!!!!

That is so true.  I have…

That is so true.  I have hired a few people at my new company from where i worked previously for 18 years.  I knew what they made.  They were people who spent 10 - 15 years at the same place.

I think overall I am.  But…

I think overall I am.  But at some point, if we don't have Harbaugh, not getting 5 stars is gonna kill Michigan.  He is truly an elite coach, with an elite staff.

There has got to be a way to induce players to come to Michigan, while maintaining a pay for performance.

One of the possible answers…

One of the possible answers is unionizing or collective bargaining.  I am not advocating for it, but it may make sense. However, if that happens the superstars will theoretically get penalized, if you have a standard pay scale.  Maybe Qb's get paid more than place kickers (my two college roommates were kickers so sorry to diss them but they are not as valuable), but it still may not work fairly for all.

The NFL model works, but how do you put a salary cap into college athletics?.

Thanks.

Thanks.

Not an MGO Lawyer, but doesn't Michigan have exposure here too?  I do believe an issue here was timing of the filling, but this could be a problem for a lot of universities, which is good.  Curious if MGO lawyers can assist on long term ramifications for other entities that sweep these issues under the rug.

Uh No.

Vaccine definition…

Uh No.

Vaccine definition was changed as COVID-19 virus shots weakened

How, some readers ask, can this column, written by a mere layman, assert that the COVID-19 vaccines aren't very effective?

First, it's because the COVID-19 vaccines are not really vaccines at all as vaccines were defined prior to the current epidemic.

That is, vaccines previously were defined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as inoculants that "produce immunity to a specific disease." But last September, as the failure of the COVID-19 vaccines to "produce immunity" was realized, the CDC changed the definition. Now the CDC defines a vaccine as "a preparation that is used to stimulate the body's immune response against diseases."

Wow, thank you for the content.  This is great.

I am too lazy to do the research but always felt this was the case.  Would love to see our DB's against their receivers. Same story I would imagine.

This really is an indictment of Day and his staff.  You look at GA and AL with similar talent to OSU and they produce year in and year out (GA more recently).

Sorry disagree.  Today is a special day so my “shit post” is OK.  You must be fun at parties!!!

Glad you said that.  I loved that show. Season 3 was pretty damn good too.  Season one of true detective was intense.  Matthew mcconaughey (?) was amazing. His character was unbelievable.

I think GOT house of dragon is pretty good. Very underwhelmed with LOTR rings of power.  I have to say the lord of the rings trilogy was my favorite every.  Blew me away, still great to watch today.  Rings of power is just blah, don’t really care about the characters.

Do agree on the money but if they expand playoffs and other conferences are not doing it. Definitely at risk.

I don't think there will be a big ten title game. I would expect to see expanded playoffs very soon.

My girlfriend at the time…

My girlfriend at the time had a brother in law who was a state cop.  They had a joke (poor taste but hey it is kind of funny) about this

Sad I know but cop humor.

Thanks for doing this.  I am…

Thanks for doing this.  I am sure we can all debate your assumptions but it is great way to start the conversation with a little more meat on it.

That being said, there has to be some form of cap or something. I know baseball does not have a salary cap.  But the luxury tax acts like one.  The competitive balance is already out of whack in football but that is really at the very top.  I don’t know how many programs could afford to do this in the us10 -15?  When does it end? Much like yankees of the 70’s if an owner is not interested in return or willing to put his personal money into the business you can buy the market.  HOw long will it take for the 5 star freshman to make more than a second round draft pick on a rookie contract. A first round contract?

Once again, thanks for doing this. Will be interesting to see all the angles none of us have really thought of brought up.

Ojabo only played half the…

Ojabo only played half the snaps?  That is strange for a first rounder.  Was he dinged up?

In a weird way could this be…

In a weird way could this be good for the big ten (not a panacea but an improvement)?  With Miami (YTM), Florida, Florida State, Texas, USC and other big time schools being down. It has potentially helped Alabama and Georgia.  If they all start competing for the 5 stars and force Alabama and Georgia to overpay eventually Alabama and Georgia get watered down a little bit?  I know it is a stretch but there are only so many 5 stars each year and if other schools start taking a cut, maybe Al and GA only get 3 or 4 a year instead of 5 or 6?  Wishful thinking?

I do think Michigan, ND and a few others will always be at a disadvantage because there are only so many 5 stars (high 4 stars) that can qualify academically.  So they are competing with the big boys on a limited number of athletes. Not saying Michigan does not stretch on some academics but some of these athletes are never gonna have a chance to get admission. Transfers are a whole different story.

Michigan will probably still get beat by the SEC champ but maybe it is closer?

Honestly thank you.  I don't…

Honestly thank you.  I don't think we agree but I really appreciate how you handled it.  Thanks for at least listening.

Sorry if links are not…

Sorry if links are not perfect. first time trying to include link in post

Per the CDC:

The viral load of vaccinated people with breakthrough cases is the same as in unvaccinated people, the CDC said Friday.

Link to article:

https://www.rollcall.com/2021/07/30/cdc-report-shows-vaccinated-people-can-spread-covid-19/

I am sure there will be some loophole where you ignore this or it is tied to a specific variant that does not currently apply

Also, it is comical that natural immunity is not taken into account for these mandates.  I have done a t cell test and I still have immunity from my t Cells. I was fully vaccinated in April and got a severe case of covid in August. I did go to the hospital because I had trouble breathing but got the monoclonal antibodies along with albuterol and started improving in 24 hours.

Here is a link to 92 studies, most are pre prints I know and some are probably not very good.  But the Israeli study is at least as good as any that show vaccinated people have longer lasting immunity than those with natural immunity.:

https://brownstone.org/articles/79-research-studies-affirm-naturally-acquired-immunity-to-covid-19-documented-linked-and-quoted/

I agree results currently show that the vaccines do help prevent hospitalization and death. However, I am curious how that will hold up over time with the new variants.

Finally I don't understand where people say the vaccines were never designed to prevent disease.  That was in the CDC's original definition of a vaccine until this year.  Plus we have all seen the videos of fauci, and the rest saying it is highly effective at preventing disease or Biden saying you won't get the disease if you are vaccinated. Also if we were really worried about hospitals being overrun, why did we fire so many good nurses and doctors who had natural immunity? Plus if we didn't get overrun in March/April of 2020 ( I know NYC was very close) then how in the heck when we have 60% plus vaccinations and natural immunity are we going to get overrun now?  Unless vaccines don't work...

Agreed. Not saying it is…

Agreed. Not saying it is good or bad but it is reality.

I am hiring two internal  candidates for these roles and we have to bump one of them almost 40% of their base to make them in line with the other sales people.  They have both been with company over 10+ years. Most people still like comfort and are afraid of risk. But if you don't burn bridges and are willing to take some chances it is a great market for employees.

I work for a very large…

I work for a very large Japanese manufacturer.  Have 5 open sales  positions right now. Job with benefits and bonus is about $175 - $200k.  Financial services.

I have had 3 people in last 5 months accept and sign offer letters only to contact me near start date and say their current  employer upped their salary, bonus or provided equity.  It is very hard to get good people. In addition, our main office in Dallas area and there is a competition between finance companies for talent in credit buyers, funding analysts and customer service folk.  Very strange time.  But great if you are looking for a job.  The old days of working for a company for 30+ years are gone.  People need to be willing to leave their company and they can make big money.

Have a great time. Jealous.  Although I hope the weather is even worse than predicted.  Get colder and snow!!!!  It can only help the team with the better running game!!!  Which I believe is Michigan.  Haskins will be the key.

Agree on DG. Him and Sam are a great listen.  DG is real.  You really need to listen to the whole podcast ( I know it is hard). I am lucky driving to INdy so I have time.  I can see why people think DG is blaming Cade.  But I don’t see it that way he points out why he expects more from Cade.  He has high exactions for a M QB and he should.  The key point he made is it was clear that MSU was giving up the passing game and played a very basic defense that was pretty easy to exploit.  He really hammered Cade on leaving the pocket early on the offsides by MSU where Andrel Anthony was on a post route that looked like he could get open. Just throw it up there and give him a chance.  Instead he bailed with very little pressure.  Also he makes the point that Cade has to to be more aggressive in Red zone on obvious man to man. He is not happy with Cornelius Johnson on the drop but he makes the point that he played receiver and it is not an easy job either.  Johnson was open by 3 yards, make the throw.

I think Cade played great.  No fumble late in4Q and we are not having this conversation. Also DG is tough on McDonald and the tempo problem.

I do think you learn something if you listen to him.  Yes he is proud/arrogant but he did it and now he teaches it.  So I tend to listen.

Thanks for doing this. I am…

Thanks for doing this. I am a masochist. I just looked up big ten website for tie breakers. Confused on the non division opponents.  You cleared it up nicely.  I believe years ago who had gone last. Was used in a tiebreaker ( the team that went last did not go this time). Could be wrong.  But M would be sure to win that tiebreaker against any team with a pulse right now.

Stephenrjking agree 98%.  My…

Stephenrjking agree 98%.  My only quibble unless Cade was hurt was putting JJ in again after first fumble.  He was too amped up.  But I don't think you can blame the coaches for this one overall.  I think the depth at DL caught up to us.  Hinton and SMith were gassed in the 4th.

Agreed on benching Cade. …

Agreed on benching Cade.  Not the time.  He has actually looked good for extended periods of time and the hit he took appeared to be in the chin.  Getting hit in the chin sucks.

Having no real evidence to back up. I really think the hit might have shook him up.  Maybe even concussion.  However if that is the case why was McCarthy not put in? The coaches are not idiots they can see what we see.  So that negates the hit being the cause of poor second half, or points to worse things.

My only concern is that if he can't get out of the funk, putting JJ in at Madison this weekend is gonna be really tough

Thanks for posting this. I…

Thanks for posting this. I listened yesterday and was curious why no discussion on this was taking place.  Devin is awesome.  Smart, funny and raw.  He is tough on the players but I think really fair.

Not sure how you felt, but I felt that he was strongly hinting at getting McCarthy more involved in the games.  He did not say bench Cade but he is not happy.

Once again, he did not say anything specific about Cade being benched, it is just my opinion.

Curious what other's think

I enjoyed it too. Ron Artest…

I enjoyed it too. Ron Artest really reminded me of Rodman the way he spoke.  I actually feel bad for him.  I don’t think he is right mentally and he needed help.  He just looked and sounded lost. Not excusing him, I did not like him and think he was wrong, but he was a pile of dynamite waiting to explode.  However, he was also a great bball player so no one cared

Shocking.  It would be news…

Shocking.  It would be news if it was not!!!!

As a retired Daimler…

As a retired Daimler employee (MB).  You picked the wrong German sports car.  However, buying used or new in next 6 months is not a good idea.  The market because of EPA engine issues and computer chips is insane.  Maintenance is high on MB and BMW.  But if you buying bmw you should be ok with that.

Thanks so much. Great info.  I am in auto finance and truck finance. Know car/truck dealers very well.  You are correct some will run it like a corporation, but some of the car/truck dealers are huge alums of the big boys.  They will drop 6 figures easy if they can get a player. They do it now.

BTW Nick Saban owns a mercedes store in AL?  Conflict of interest?

I have only done bone in chicken, chicken breasts, pork tenderloin and pork chops.  all were under 3 hours.  Going to try brisket this week end!!  The recipe I am going to follow is about 16 hours I think.  ( a you tube video).  Really excited, but man I don’t want to screw it up, brisket is not cheap.

What did you watch/read to do the pulled pork.  That is next after brisket.

Brian

your writing skills are incredible and the fact you use them to talk about my favorite subject (Michigan sports) is such a bonus.  Truly this blog has been a blessing, even during the rich rod years.

I too have struggled mightily this year with anxiety.  It is such a motherfucker.  How unbelievable is it that we can’t control our own thinking??

Either way we all get up and we all keep going.  You unfortunately have an added burden.  You bring joy and happiness to thousands.  Sorry.  Please stick with it and kick the shit out of what you are dealing with.

What a pleasant (relative) surprise.  I did not expect any UFR after the continuing debacle that is Michigan football.  Thanks for doing this.  I can't imagine how painful it must be.

Trying to find any nuggets of optimism right now.  This may not help, but searching for anything.

Sincere thanks for taking the time.

Thank you for some excellent perspective.  I am a 55 year old white dude and racism is all over.  The problem I see is in how we solve it.  Very little being discussed today will actually fix it.  We need to get better schools in the cities, address the lack of family structure, provide capital to small business and just admit racist assholes are out there and blow right past them.  Unfortunately it will take time because too many generations have been so screwed over by the system.

The police for the most part are just cleaning up societies mess.  Plus unions don’t let cities get rid of bad cops. I am not anti union, but changes need to be made ( just like in teaching and my wife is a teacher)

One of the best posts I have ever seen on this blog.  Thank you
