From a fellow Toledo-an, good luck Mark. You earned a role in the B1G, but you'd be a star for the Rockets!

USC? Trojans or Cocks?
USC (Trojans) lost in the 2nd round. USC (Cocks) did not finish in top 10 of football.

I'm with you. We pulled together some roster height but need width. There is a brand of 6'8 brickhouse with the footwork and positioning skills to keep opposing bigs off easy buckets in the paint. We have needed that on defense badly at times, even if it doesn't fit the Beilein system. Jordan Morgan (senior year anyway) is the only one I can think of over the Beilein tenure that fits the bill.

Honestly, Walton has come close lately. But he can't do it alone. Mo and DJ have to bring toughness in the paint every night. MSU and OSU had no trouble backing our big men down for points in the last 5 minutes to put those games away.

Volunteered at an animal sanctuary in Villa Tunari, which could be considered the Bolivia of Bolivia, about a decade ago. You can walk in never having owned so much as a dog or house cat and become caretaker for a spider monkey or jaguar. Might leave with some scars but 10/10 do recommend.
Hope your friend likes my cool story.

I actually wanted him to kick the PAT on the first one; I prescribe to a philosophy of going for 2 only when the clock demands it. But the whole point of going for 2 the first time is that you know if you miss you'll take another shot next time at the same ~50/50 odds. So it's really just one decision and a completely defensible one given the circumstances and expected value.

Disagree slightly on "plenty of time" but agree that having more time and fewer TO doesn't necessarily mean our offense can come up with what they need any easier.

How about vs. 1 timeout and 1:30? I will take that over 3 timeouts and :35, or at least argue it's a big difference. You can stop the clock in other ways when you have the ball but only one way when the opponent does.

No mention of not using any TOs before the game winning TD? Seems like that dubious strategy is becoming a theme.

that i understand. but the ball crossed the plane for evans way before his foot landed out of bounds. if we imagine the goal line is instead the 50 in the screenshot below, does the ball get spotted shy of the 50 (wherever it was when it crossed the sideline)? i think so, but what if the players body has not crossed the sideline yet? and doesn't the "plane of the goal line extends infinitely" concept make this unique? football rules are complicated.
harbaugh asked whether that's a TD if his foot had hit the pylon. i think the answer is "yes" since that is equivalent to his toe touching the field in the end zone. chris should have just stuck the ball out a bit but seems like this should be ruled a TD.

right call. bad rule.
another bad rule that needs to be addressed is that you can end the game with an intentional offensive penalty. in a just rulebook, the refs giving CMU a hail mary shot would have been the right call. same can be said for the recent illinois high school controversy where the refs also misapplied the same untimed down rule. and now jim's brother is taunting the football gods with this one!

I'm not worried about next year, I think we can be very good and in the hunt again. But your OP doesn't really line up with this comment.
Hard to see depth at OL, especially since Newsome is totally up in the air. That leaves Cole as the only one with any experience (JBB and Kugler maybe had one start each this year?) and a distinct possibility of playing freshmen. I'll reserve judgment until Spring/Fall but the caveat "young depth" is sugar coating the uncertainty with this position group.
The secondary is "better with Clark" than without but won't be better than this year. I could see our young WR prospects turning out a plus but as of today seems like another group that takes a step back. We will like what we see in 2017 but our starting DBs and WRs will be hard to replace. Realistically, Peppers is gone; Hurst likely as well.
I do agree that having MSU/OSU at home is huge and really look forward to seeing the development from Gary and Speight. It's not that I'm even concerned about our ability to compete, just reacting to what I see on your depth chart versus what this comment says.

Wait... OSU has 4 top 10 wins with two being blowouts?

- Beat Michigan in 2OT
Or are you counting Nebraska because they were #10 at the time? And if so, why are you including Oklahoma? They were #14 in week 3, having already lost to Houston.

I have engaged with Craig many times in his search for the Unified Theory of Football. When he first shared Romer's work, it became clear to me that coaches, as a herd, should be more aggressive on fourth. Dramatically so, even. But it's hard for me to accept the premise the 4th down chart is as context-independent as theorized. Elaborating a bit on the author's examples...
Scenario A: 4th and 3 from the opponent 35. Your Freshman punter hasn't coffin-cornered one all year; your swiss-cheese defense lost its starting safety to a rolled ankle on the last drive; RB has been punishing opponents in short yardage all game; game is tied 45-45 with 8 minutes left in the 4th.
Scenario B: 4th and 3 from the opponent 35. Your All-American punter has pinned the ball inside the 10 all year; your offense has picked up just 5 first downs all game; your DBs have been blanketing WRs all day; game is tied 6-6 with 8 minutes left in the 4th.
The chart is an indispensible reference point, but says "go for it" with equal gusto in both scenarios. I would interpret a decision to punt justifiable in B and abhorrent in A. And the situational context differences here don't even fet into the "human element" that coaches are paid in part to understand with a group of 18-22 year olds. Even if the coach can remain dispassionate when the outcome is unfavorable, he's playing chess with sentient pieces.

Are the wins over top 10/25 based on ranking at time of the game or as of today? For example, do we get +4 for the win over PSU because they are top 10 now? Or was that worth less because they weren't at the time?

RPS numbers won't be good. Iowa offense was actually moving it with good old rock and hit us with a few timely scissors. Defensively they positioned to contain the edge well and stuffed a couple head-scratching runs we sent outside the tackle anyway.
It is beyond my pay grade to say if we got outcoached. I just know we have the better one and still lost. Harbaugh has proven brilliant and this is what he means that every game is a championship game. Every opponent is to be respected. Even Ferentz, target of much mockery here (and for good reason), can rise to the occasion against a superior opponent.
On the fuield the Jimmys and Joes followed suit. Iowa couldn't pass but was solid in the trenches against our monster DL and Wadley was fantastic. Their defense was fine but we had chances. The game was lost on Wilton missing a couple likely TD deep balls and receivers failing to bring in a couple challenging but critical catches.
Positive takeaway: Kenny Allen hits a clutch 51yd FG on the road. At the time I thought he'd miss and was bitching about four down territory and the previous play call.
