It just seems odd that Jim would labor so long and hard to get this team/program "right" again... just to risk letting it collapse again now.

SDW, you are dead wrong and i challenge you to find a post of mine that does anything other than state my opinion and the reasons for it.  no name calling, no snide comments like, 'only an idiot would think otherwise'.  never and that's not my nature or my posting history.   when anyone made a comment along the lines of asking if i was sure, my response was always something like, 'i realize there is a non-zero chance' or 'i know its a possibility, but...', etc.

This isn't exactly a "him or us" scenario.  He has a better situation here, now, than perhaps any other time in his tenure - with pay comparable to any NFL team (not like he needs the money anyway).  How long would Minnesota stick with him if he doesn't win the division and/or conference?

Did push really come to shove right here at this point though?  That was last year. This year the program has the most momentum it's had since.... '97?

More likely, he realizes this may be his last chance to jump to the NFL because his stock is high right now and if he signs his UM extension he's going to have a significant buyout if he leaves.

Complete conjecture on my part, but I have to think he's not pleased with the contract he worked on this past year and is reluctant to agree to huge buyout on his end as his reward for getting UM to the playoffs when he wasn't valued a year ago and knows he'll never have much influence on admissions, NIL, etc.

I hope like hell we don't find out down the road that his UM offer was significantly less than Tucker, Franklin, etc. just signed, but with a higher buyout on JH's end.  Something tells me that's a real possibility though.

When Harbaugh says he loves Michigan and would coach for free, what he really means is, this is what the fans want to hear, but he couldn't give a rat's ass about them. It’s all about him and what he wants, and if it screws Michigan over, screws recruits over, upsets the fans, he obviously doesn't care.

This is the kind of stuff I'm worried about.

Hopefully it's much ado about nothing, but if Johnson ends up leaving, Harbaugh's name is going to be mud with a wide span of the Michigan fanbase.

The people whose names should be mud are Warde Manuel and the university administration. Manuel created this train wreck starting last year with his incompetent decision to embarrass Harbaugh by cutting his pay in half. It's become clear that Michigan's ceiling is beating OSU once a decade and winning the B1G once every 15 years only to get crushed in the CFP and the university and athletic department are just fine with that.

This sucks.  It's sort of hard to tell how good you are, or even how much to enjoy each victory until the year is over.  Had we lost to OSU and our bowl game this would have been a 10-3 year. Good but not great.   ...but we beat OSU and then Iowa and it was a great year.  When you have a great year, you really enjoy for most of the next year until you either win or lose to MSU and OSU.

I hope Harbaugh stays and that he brings us another decade of great years and I will sing his praises.

If he leaves F him.  Not even getting to enjoy this great year for more than a couple of months sucks.  Gattis might be a great coach, but he has one good year as a coordinator.  Gattis is not a HC coach-in-waiting.  If we get a new coach our recruiting class and coaches scatter to the wind.
