Who will QB Michigan this season?

Submitted by rockydude on September 28th, 2021 at 2:30 PM

Nothing against Cade, all he’s done is win. However, I’m just wondering what peoples’ opinions are, regarding who will QB M throughout this season.

After the first game or two, I thought we might go to a two QB system. And when the run game looked unstoppable, I thought Cade was pretty safe. Now, I’m less certain.

I don’t think a change would happen soon, if it did happen, and I’m definitely not trying to say that a change should happen.

But I would like to know who people think WILL be the starter, not who deserves it or what M SHOULD do.

So, if you think Bowman wins the starting job the night before the OSU game, chime in. I like to hear peoples’ thoughts on how this will shake out.

Bowman was projected by some sportswriters as the likely starter heading into the season. They were wrong. I used him as an example just to show that any opinion is worth hearing. I don’t think that my use of him as an example was ideal, given that it seems to have confused (just a few) people more than it clarifies anything.

Question remains the same: who’s going to be the starter later in the season?

Not to be a negative Nancy.  But it doesn't matter who the QB is if we don't fix this offense then we are not going to win more then a couple more games.   Rutgers knew our game plan and stopped us and forced us to do something different and what do we do the same ol shit we have done since Harbaugh has been the coach run same play after same play and be conservative as hell.   With the way college football is you need a dam good offense to win games now.   This isn't the 70s or 80s.  We rank with the service academies with throwing the ball.   And before people start saying we ran so good.  Well there are plenty of other teams who run for 250 -300 and pass for 300 yards.   Gattis needs to go and Harbaugh needs to stay the hell out of any offensive game plan or play calling.

...and this would be the correct assessment. Year after year Saban seamlessly changes out his OC and his roster. The excuses made around these issues are simply that-excuses. Elite coaching can mitigate most of the recruiting level differences Michigan is now experiencing-relative to that "elite" group of programs. The margin of error is much smaller but if the raw talent on this roster is well-coached they can challenge Alabama. Michigan has the physical talent available to "shock the world" and  I would surely love to see it happen. At this time there is nothing that warrants such a "shocking" expectation-that last half of last week's game gives all of us great pause.

@FanNamedOzzy nailed it.  It is truly that simple.

Look no further than Henning on punt returns.  They didn’t throw him back there in the night game against Washington because they wanted to break him in during a less stressful situation. The staff even said so!

Barring an injury, the only realistic time to give JJ a start or significant playing time would be home against Northwestern.  In theory, that is either after Cade leads the team to victory at Wisconsin and at Nebraska (which, at that point, anybody calling for his head should STFU) or we lose or are losing one of those games and JJ goes in during desperation mode.

Everyone should be hoping for the former, not the latter.  If JJ was close, he would have played meaningful minutes against Rutgers.

This is Cade’s team.

Another is that you introduced a potentially interesting question in a less than well thought out fashion that not surprisingly generated more ridicule than thoughtful conversation.

There is plenty of thoughtful conversation to be had around Cade and JJ.   Bringing Bowman into it seems like quite a reach.   Is there any evidence at all that suggests that the coaches have confidence in Bowman as a starter.   There is currently a clear starter in Cade and a clear backup and potential competitor for the starting role in JJ.   Then there is everyone else.   At this point Bowman has seen less game action than Villari this year.   Barring an injury, is there any evidence at all that the coaches consider him a candidate to start?   I have plenty of questions about the handling of our qbs.    The only ones that involve Bowman playing a significant role involve injuries to Cade and/or JJ.   Questions I have include:

1. What happened to the confidence that Cade had against Rutgers in 2020?Was that just a function of not having time to think about being the qb when the game was on the line, or has the lack of confidence that Harbaugh and Gattis have shown in Cade undermined his confidence?

2. Was Cade’s poor performance in the 2nd half against Rutgers a result of lack of confidence or injury?

3. What would it take for Harbaugh to pull Cade when the game was in the line?   Is the fact that he didn’t give JJ a chance an indication that he doesn’t think JJ is ready yet (that the risk of him making a mistake outweighed the chance of him doing something good), or is it Harbaugh showing too much loyalty to his starting qb?

4. Is Cade’s confidence totally shot, or can he bounce back against Wisconsin?   If he can’t, will Harbaugh pull him for JJ?

5. In a world where Cade does remain the starting qb,what happens in the off-season?  How many qbs stick around?   It is hard for me to imagine Bowman sticking around.   Do both McCarthy and Cade feel like they are going to get a fair shot or does one of them transfer?

I suspect one of two things happens: Cade gets his mojo back and leads us to victory against Wisconsin cementing the starting job and bringing back optimism or Cade’s confidence is shot, we get down to Wisconsin and JJ is the starting qb for Nebraska.   Personally I am rooting for #1.

I included Bowman and Vilari just to show that you can include a dark horse. I considered just editing that out, but I don’t see it relevant at this point. As far as eliciting ridicule, when I check in on the board, which is admittedly more and more rare, there’s a lot more snark and ridicule than discussion. So, I’ll take responsibility for a less than perfectly written question, but I’m not taking a bit of responsibility for ridicule or snark or whatever. This is turning into the whiny bitch board. But you had a number of good points relating to the actual substance, which I appreciate.

Not accepting responsibility isn’t the same as not being responsible.    If you want thoughtful answers, right more thoughtful posts.   If you want to start a conversation about when and if JJ will replace Cade, just say that.  Throwing out Bowman’s name doesn’t make you seem more open minded, it just makes you seem less serious.

Agree with the your comments. It has increasingly become a feature of this board to come out and ridicule. Agree bringing in Bowman in the post was not ideal, but honestly when I read it the first time it was clear that it is just an example. But somehow folks just latched on to it and took the whole conversation in a different direction. I don't agree with the topic of this post to begin with but my thought is people are posting because they care, and seeing them being put down is sad.

Cade this year vs Rutgers has nothing to do with Cade last year.

Cade was rattled because of a nasty hit.  Harbaugh stayed with him because we were ahead by plenty and pulling him would damaged his confidence even more, and

Harbaugh needs Cade to get his confidence back by Wisconsin.  Leaving him in would have hopefully allowed him to make some throws. If the game was on the line, it wasn’t, we might have seen something different.

If we are behind in a game, the run game isnt working, and Cade can’t make or see throws, you can bet he’s gone. It will be during a game if it happens.

The off-season depends on what happens in November.

I knew the negs would come. I still held out hope that some people would give a well reasoned take on how things will play out. It’s a known fact who the starter is today. I don’t at all find it obvious who will start the last game of the season.

I’m sure that if McCarthy (or whoever) is given the job before the end of the season, the members of the cyber lynch mob will all apologize though. ?

I don't see Cade making it through the year as the starter.. hard to listen to Gardner break down the game and not get the impression that Cade is very much limiting the offense.  No team chooses to be one dimensional unless it has to and my guess is eventually this will become unavoidable at which point you go with the guy with A) more upside and B) a future you want to have remain in AA.

Well cade proved last year and this year he can throw a deep ball fairly well, and he threw it a ton against rutgers last year so pretty sure it's not cade that's limiting our offense.

It's either the play calling or our wide receivers are very good.  They may be fast but their ability coupled with the play calls are holding the pass attack down

I don't think Case ALWAYS limits the offense. I think Cade seems to get rattled and at times he does limit the offense. Against NIU and Western he was dialed in and throwing well. We ran the ball that much because we could. Against Washington and Rutgers second half, Cade was uncomfortable and killing drives with missed throws and missed reads. The offense truly goes as Cade goes. The only times people have bitched about the play calling have been the 6 quarters of football where Cade seemed uncomfortable and sped up.

Devin Gardner breaks it down pretty wonderfully. When you've got a 6'10" TE wide open on a dig route and you can't even throw a ball he can get his hands on, that absolutely limits how a coordinator will call the game.

Watch the 2nd half O tape against Rutgers as McNamara missed 4-5 passes with bad throws.  We called pass plays, he failed to execute them.  Now the question is, can McCarthy or Bowman do better?  Bet we’ll find out the answer to this if McNamara struggles against Wisconsin.
