Who was the worst journalist throughout the search?

Submitted by GoWings2008 on

I found this news story just a bit ago....

http://www.inquisitr.com/1712800/don-lemon-named-to-worst-journalist-of-2014-list/

...and it got me thinking about who was the absolute worst reporter/journalist throughout UM's recent coaching search.  We've had plenty of candidates, plenty of discussion over one guy's comments or another guy's comments.  So, now I'm asking...who takes the prize now that it's all over.

For my money, it's not the obvious answer...Schefter.  Its Tim Kawakami...not just for the inaccuracy of his "reporting" but for the ego and trolling he displayed along the way.

Anyone have any other inputs?

Kawakami, but on a national level La Canfora.  La Canfora was so obviously gettiny played by agents and his information was so far off.

At least Kawakami admitted he was wrong last night. Schefter took until just now to finally claim that it's a done deal. Which is clearly a new development. And isn't Rapoport still trying to say it's the Raiders?

Greg Gabriel was an asshat!!! Kawakami consistently looked like a sad clown trapped in the circus biz!! All I have to state to the haters is Harbaugh, Harbaugh Harbaugh... and Harbaugh. Harbaugh!!!

Corner of the internet guy, Greg Gabriel. But he did graciously tweet this:

Looks like the Michigan fans got their guy. Happy for them. This should make Ohio State week interesting.

I'd say Drew Sharp, but I wouldn't want to insult actual news writers by calling him a journalist. Cowherd isn't a journalist, so he doesn't count, so... Kawakami? Schefter, I have to say, has been pretty derp as well. Rapoport might be the worst. Those three were bad enough I'm probably going to disregard anything they report after this.

Just saw fox sports say " it's not official yet. Falcons still have time to take a shot at Harbaugh. " Wow. Maybe they should just give it up. He's gone dude. Get over it.

NFL guys reported their NFL stuff.  Okay fine.  They were wrong.  Then they began to get the sense they were wrong and started hedging.  Now they will begin writing stories of the evolution of the hire and will credit Michigan for its pull or denigrate Harbaugh for leaving the NFL.  Besides the really fringe guys though (Brandt, Garbriel etc), most were at least civil and at least had the guise of professionalism.

Henson, on the other hand, was merely one of the first to report what this and other blogs considered a probablilty for quite some time.  I strongly suspect  Brian, JUB, Sam and others had more and better sources than Gregg Henson, but they were too professional to call the race because they just didn't know.  Hence the % meme.  Henson went ahead and called it because he is a blowhard (if you doubt me check his twitter feed) with nothing to lose  He is now selectively using MGoBlog message board posts to celebrate his own greatness.  He's not great.  He's lucky.

There is an evolution quickly forming amongst InterwebzMedia.  There is a clickchasing mentality that minimizes accuracy for sensationalism.  Traditional media can't afford this.  When the NYT or the WSJ are found to be wrong their wrongs are pointed out for years.  Their reputations are truly everything.  When Gregg Henson or Drudge or Huffington are wrong they shrug their shoulders, chuckle, cash their checks and move on.  On the other hand we have MGoBlog where being right meant a great deal to its leadership.  Great job Brian!

Sorry for the long post.  Cheers.  Go Blue!  Harbaugh!

...that a former Michigan co-captain had sent an e-mail to the Board of Regents that included in its list of Brandon grievances

20)Reminds me of Adolph Hitler

Just a start boys, you and I have lots more

That's Gregg Henson. He's got some people in the community passing him information and either he doesn't have the mental capacity to parse it or he's capable but simply doesn't bother. It should have passed credulity that anyone, however temporarily incapacitated, would send a Godwined e-mail to the Board. And the very next line makes it clear that this is still in draft form, "just a start", and not sent in this form to the Regents, who are not "boys".

That would have been an embarrassing career-crusher for an actual reporter concerned for his reputation. It wouldn't have been that hard to present this as what it apparently was, an e-mail being circulated to drum up ideas for a petition to the Board. Getting it right wouldn't even have lessened the impact, in my opinion. But getting it right is way above Henson's pay grade.

Lots of people know somebody that used to play football at Michigan. Most of those people know how to read a purported e-mail and figure out the likely context. What makes Henson uniquely great and/or lucky is that he can't. Or doesn't, anyway.

Maybe it's because I just don't like his personality but I think Jeff Moss has been the worst of the beat writers. He's been awfully petty and has resorted to name-calling on his twitter account a few times. It's not that his coverage has been crap, just his attitude during the whole thing.

Kawakami takes the cake for the whole thing though. Not getting bent out of shape either way. We got what we wanted.

Kawakami, for being a petulant bitch throughout.

Greg Gabe who said it was a FACT Harbaugh wasn't coming to Ann Arbor

Mike Silver who is still teweeting out that Mark Davis will meet with Harbaugh this morning before he boards the plane.

FootballScoop for kicking it all off with their infamous tweet about how Hackett and Michigan were blowing the search ON THE DAY HOKE WAS FIRED.

Jeff Riger (97.1) - for claiming Kyle Whittingham was in Ann Arbor back in early December

Mike Valenti- because he's the consummate Sparty ass-hat.

I would have to say Kawakami for his behavior toward anyone that asked him for facts to support his position during the last few weeks. There are others of course.

I did see this article written by Kawakami that I found interesting. He really lays into York and Baalke for lettting Jim go.

Kawakami: Electric Jim Harbaugh shows why 49ers will regret this

http://www.mercurynews.com/tim-kawakami/ci_27220375/kawakami-electric-harbaugh-shows-why-49ers-will-regret?source=infinite

Loved this comment by him;

"For 20 mesmerizing minutes, Jim Harbaugh stood at a podium and commanded the room, the building, the nation and the football universe

Anybody watching this performance should've sprinted to hire a coach like that -- and that's exactly what the University of Michigan is doing."

I've read several of his recent articles, and the guy's a good writer and puts some real content into what he writes, at least in the ones I read.

The main problem with him is that, like so many people, he should stay the hell away from twitter and other social media because he's as thin-skinned as a spoiled three-year old.

I don't give a shit that he's a UM grad—Schefter's just a hack.

throw out an off-the-cuff statement that his "over/under" for JH to leave is 3 yrs.  I thought this was laughable to say this when JH hasn't even said a word yet about his reasons for taking the job, WHEN/IF that happens.  Typical NFL viewpoint.  Get ready for JH to be rumored as a candidate to fill every NFL opening that arises, it may not even take more than a year or two for this to occur.

As a bay area resident over the last 20 years, I've had the unfortunate experience of reading Kawakami off and on over the years. He loves to throw stuff out there, get under readers skin and then act like the smartest person in the room when something sticks. He's that annoying kid in middle school who kicks your chair to get attention, until you have to pound him into submission. His article was hardly "eating crow", and he would've scorched Michigan fans if the decision didn't go our way.

At least he's not afraid to call out ownership, York and Baalke however, to his credit. Ratto continues his character assault on Harbaugh and says he needs to grow up, change his personality, etc. or he'll wear everyone out in Ann Arbor in three years like he has everywhere else he's gone. Wth? I don't remember USD or Stanford clamoring for him to leave? In fact Stanford made a substantial offer to try and hold on to him.

Then when Dave Feldman and some ex Niners were lauding Harbaugh for taking the high road against the media leaks by ownership, Ratto claimed that Harbaugh was doing the same thing! When Feldman called him on it, his bloated face stammered and said his agent is probably saying stuff and guarantees it will begin to happen in the future. It's amazing the bs he comes up with without any proof!  and I commend Feldman for not going off on him and keeping his cool.

I'm inclined to take the high road for most of these guys, however the second you start berating the fan base for being fans and, in most cases, doing nothing other than asking fair questions, you deserve to be on lists like this. I was blocked by Kawakami for commenting on how many people he blocked. I was blocked by Gabriel because the day after he wrote an article calling the entire fanbase asinine I called him out on it. He then continued to send me messages even though I was blocked because he's a child, and one such message claims that Michigan fans are dumb. I'm not sure where Greg went to school, but I find it hilarious that he believes a fanbase made up of a significant amount of alumns from a near ivy level school is comprised of stupid people.

These guys know that if they register an account on twitter and use that to "break news" they will be exposed to people who disagree with them. Those who respond smuggly and then act incredulous because someone dares stand up to them deserve any and all less than gracious responses they get. I know the thread above from Rapoport was kind of douchy, but overall he's at least been professional, even though he was dead wrong. The same can be said for Schefter, although last evening's post was kind of ridiculous.

Oh, and Drew Sharp is still a shithead.

Where else will these guys be called out for telling everyone to 'STFU I have sources'. These guys are making a career of being reporters and supposedly being a trustworthy source of information, but several have proven to be unreliable trolls who may be so trollish that they are now actively denying the full truth of the matter.

Guys like Rappoport, Schefter, Kawaski, Brandt, etc. should all be held accountable in the public sphere for their poor reporting. It's literally why they have jobs so don't get all pissy when you get called for being bad at your job. It's another example of the Michigan bloggers being lightyears ahead of the MSM. Brian, Sam, JUB, etc all crushed their mainstream counterparts. If this was a sport, those other guys would've been mercyruled.
