Who gets suspended?

Submitted by ThadMattasagoblin on February 20th, 2022 at 11:52 PM

Right now I'm going with

Michigan:

Howard 5 games, Moussa 2-3 games, Williams 2-3 games

Wisconsin:

Neath with 2-3 games, Krabbenhoft with 2 games and Gard with 1.

Will likely be much longer for Howard. They won’t bring him back until he completes anger management. Neath’s should be longer too, though it probably won’t be.

Agree it'll likely be longer.

And Warde Manuel is correct. There is no excuse for this regardless of instigation, and there was nothing near enough to deserve hands being thrown anyway. That's why he is profusely apologizing to our leaders, Wisconsin's leaders, and the Big Ten.

Juwan as Michigan's Head Coach is supposed to be the leader, the example to follow, to represent the team and university with class and dignity. As Alex said in todays review, your coach cannot be the one to go Sonny Corleone when the situation gets heated, you cannot be the one to start a brawl that throws the players in danger.

His conduct was wildly unbecoming of his position, and it's not surprising many around the country are sadly calling for him to be fired, perhaps justifiably so.

If Williams or Diabete get the same as Neith that is garbage. They deserve one game, as they were reacting to Neith. And if Krabbenhoft doesn't get a little closer to Howard that is also BS, he jumped in as a clear instigator  putting his hands on UM players including shoving Faulds.  The reality is it was a really stupid incident that both sides had chances to descalate and share responsibility for getting to the point it did.

After rewatching the two videos of the altercation (CBS broadcast and sideline video) it's clear that Williams threw a Wisconsin assistant coach to the ground at least once and then also threw a punch at Neath, albeit in retaliation to being swung at first by Neath. Williams will likely see the longest suspension of all UM players and it will be entirely deserved.

Krabbenhoft deserves a suspension yes, but his contact with UM players was still definitely a level below what Howard ended up doing and so he will not get a suspension similar to Howard. Expecting an equal suspension of both Howard and Krabbenhoft is ridiculous, Howard had the most egregious action of all coaches involved.

I did not say equal I said at least somewhat closer. There is no way in hell a coach who shoves one player and puts his hands on another deserves a slap on the wrist.

As far Williams the video posted further down the page sure as hell looks like that Wisconsin coach was charging and Williams more or less reacted in self defense. And that initial punch by the Wisconsin player was a straight sucker punch, there is no way in hell someone who throws a sucker punch initially should get the same as the guys reacting to it.

Your characterization of Krabbenhoft's contact as a 'shove' is a little hyperbolic no? It doesn't seem like he fully shoves either Faulds or TWill, though he definitely puts his hands on both players. His main culpability in all this, besides clearly being a generic douchebag, is that he charged in to the middle of scrum and tried to talk shit to Howard, and clearly must have said something provocative. That's the escalation he bears 100% responsibility for, and that will be what draws him a suspension, if any is handed down at all.

Maybe the Wisconsin assistant was charging. Maybe he was just trying to duck under the massive amounts of arms that were shoving around him. But, TWill throws him to the ground at least once (towards the stands) and then it looks like perhaps a second time (back onto the court). I'm sorry, but again TWill's actions are the more egregious here.

Unfortunately, it's just that Howard, and the UM players (Diabate and TWill) ended up acting in the most egregious manner here. Yes, Wisconsin coaches (Gard and Krabbenhoft) and players (Neath) played a major part in escalating the situation and were physical too, but not on the same level as UM's personnel. It was shameful behavior all around and all parties involved deserve some form of punishment. However, UM's personnel clearly deserve the more punitive suspensions in this case.

You can see Faulds literally stumble back a little bit in reaction to the contact. That is a large man getting moved by a much smaller one. That doesn't happen without a decently forceful shove. Unless a player puts his hands on you first, you have absolutely no right to do so as a coach. Not as inappropriate as punch/swipe but still pretty far over the line to do as coach. He also needs to be held responsible for playing a large part in escalation and instigating.

There are a lot of people in that scrum, he almost certainly stumbles on others feet as well. The Wisconsin coaches deserve little if any suspension in this scenario.  Howard started it by trash talking and then escalated it with a punch.  How he is still employed is beyond me and very disappointing.

Juwan will be gone. T-Will will not play this year at least. Moussa will not play this year and then try to go pro. Brooks, Hunter. and Jones are gone. Houstan will probably not play this year and then transfer because Juwan is gone and also he will look at the team and see there is not much left to try to build his game.

Juwan blew the whole team up with this disgrace. I'm pissed at him. You should be too. He just set the program back a few years.

Wisconsin guys I don't care but they will get time too.

What happens beyond this year is anybody’s guess, but if we were headed to the big dance this year it was to get face pounded by a 2 seed in the second round.  Moussa was leaving anyway.  Honestly in this heralded class, Bufkin sparks my interest, the rest are simply not what we hoped.  I think yesterday was a culmination of a lot of frustration from this season, and if anything may result in a change in recruiting strategy away from simply starzzz and to focusing on roster management.  He hasn’t been coaching for long and is still learning.

On no planet are Williams and Diabete getting suspended for the season after reacting to Wisconsin's player punching first. Honestly they deserve a game each but I can see a scenero the Big Ten screws them over with more than one, but rest of the season is pure doom and gloom nonsense.

Maybe extreme but one game for throwing punches. Not a chance.

The point is Juwan trashed this season in those few minutes.
He needs to be removed.

The team had momentum and it's over now. Keeping guys for next year is now in serious jeopardy,,,, and recruiting.....? C'mon. wake up.

What he did tonight was a big deal.

Doubt this will hurt recruiting in any way. Coach standing up for his players. Went over the line but players will certainly see that differently than media and fans.

Do you really think a HS athlete will condemn Juwan for throwing hands when he thought his team was being disrespected? I'm not worried about recruiting.

That is exactly the attitude that got Howard and the rest of the team in the mess they are in right now.  Looking at the two things that Howard say started the whole thing:

During his postgame news conference, Howard said he didn't like Wisconsin calling for a timeout with 15 seconds left and the Badgers leading by 15.

“I thought it was not necessary at the moment, especially being a large lead,” Howard said.   Later he said it was escalated because someone “touched him”.

“Someone touched me, and I think it was very uncalled for, for them to touch me, as we were verbalizing and communicating with one another,” Howard said. "That’s what escalated it.”

Howard said he reacted after someone from Wisconsin put hands on him. He said that “at that point, I felt it was time to protect myself.”   Howard was never physically slightly in danger.   The only thing he was protecting was his ego.

None of that is worth fighting for and getting suspended for.    That is doubly so because:

1. The timeout that got Howard so riled was no more ridiculous a late game blowout move then the full court press that his team ran.   No full court press, no timeout, no scrum.

2. Howard’s inability to control his anger provoked his own players as much as it provoked the Wisconsin side.   His players don’t throw any punches if he doesn’t come into the handshake line all charged about a stupid time out.

It is both a coaches job to de- escalate situations like this and not to create them and a coaches job to model to his players how to react to situations like this.    Unfortunately Howard did neither.

This is not a case of getting fired up and strenuously arguing a bad call in an important game (the fire we all like in Harbaugh).   This is a case of getting fired up and then escalating over something completely inconsequential.

At this point I am pretty ambivalent about whether Howard gets fired or just suspended.   His behaviors harmed his players, put his bosses in an incredibly shitty position and reflect poorly on the athletic department and the university.   All because of a timeout in a blowout loss.

I guess it's late night youngster hour.

If you don't think that is a firable offense, then you just don't understand what the responsibility of a coach at the University of Michigan is supposed to represent.

Teaching boys and girls how to be respectable men and women.

That is job #1.

Acting like a 14 year old when things get tense and you disagree, not so much.

Agree, have no idea where all these Michigan 'fans' are crawling out from, justifying assault on another coach.

Are they in school? Do they have jobs? In what professional environment is assault taken so lightly .This is so extremely rare people are going back decades to Woody Hayes.

Sad to see brainwashed fans defending a coach who committed a fireable offense is something we do as well as any other.

Guess I was mistaken to believe we were better than that.

You have some serious, serious anger management issues, and look at you jumping straight to race.

I've been a victim of racism many times in my life, and it's people like you that scream and cry and throw that accusation every time he can't control himself and throws a tantrum that makes it harder for the real victims of racism.

Get a grip, try to set some higher expectations for your sorry self, and try not living at rock bottom. Michigan has no need for fans who see no problem with assault.

Alright,

Here's my sorry self telling you exactly how it is.

Fuck you you big humongous pussy. A grown man barely slapped another grown man. It was a childish stupid act no doubt, but you fucking crybabies on this website are so fucking soft Nobody deserves to be fired.

And further more I'll be more than happy to discuss my anger management issues with you in person.

Have a shitty day racist

I am curious to know what race you are.  I’m black, so I would to like understand how him bring up the Fab Five is racist.  There are fans that are still alive that hated them for what the looked like.  I know a member of the fab five personally who said the letters were horrible and the way they were treated at times were horrible.  Now one is coaching and those same fans are looking for an excuse to fire him.  Unfortunately, he gave them one.  I went to Michigan for undergrad and grad school.  I love my school, but there is a lot of racism on that campus.  We can compare stories if you would like.

Nowhere else to go but to call someone racist?

Shame. You are a small-minded person.

Expand your view of humanity. If you do, your thoughts will almost never involve race because people are people and all of us have so much more in common than not Darker Blue.

I'm kinda dark too.

This is college basketball. You can be caught allocating funds to recruits on a wire tap by the FBI and not be fired. You sweep sexual assaults under the rug and not be fired. Lightly grazing the side of the face of a grown man who just pushed two of your student-athletes does not get you fired.
