Who's going to the Slippery Rock game?

Submitted by HELLE on
I'm just curious who's going to the Slippery Rock game? I was in the stadium for the announcement of the game and there wasn't much of a reaction to it. I'm only going if I don't have anything else better to do that day. I really can't see over 70,000 showing up, but I've been terrible lately at guessing things like that. I didn't think the soccer match would have as much demand as it does.

This might sound bad, but in all seriousness, I'd rather see a good local high school game.

If it wasn't such a money grab (aren't tickets around $20???) then I might consider it.

Yes, it is.

$20 for a ticket.  $5 for a pepsi.  $4 for a slice of pizza.

For what?  A D2 football game that will have no excitement, no emotional connection, no gameday atmosphere.

Like I said, a high school game would be more fun for a fraction of the cost.

Exactly - that's my point.  It might be fun... if the weather's nice and the cost is cheap.  But I'm not at all emotionally invested in the outcome of the game which makes the enjoyment of the game tough.  And, it's not like going to a regular game where your team isn't playing but your surrounded by passionate fans.  It's going to be a lot of fans that are like "eh, whatever" if SR loses.

To me, it's a game that if I were a student I would go catch the first half because it's free, but then leave by half because I'd be bored.  The only difference now is that I would be compelled to stay because I've dropped $20.  So, I'm not going to drop $20 on something that's not that interesting to me.

Especially when I can take that $20 and get a ticket (or two?) to the Miami game.

I think the whole Slippery Rock connection is something only meaningful to those over 50.   Unless they are going to have UM players signing memorabilia for middleaged dudes to sell on eBay I can't see this game pulling more people than Fan Day.

I'm a man.  I'm 40 and a UM alum and fan for the last 34 years.   I remember as a kid hearing the SP score being announced at the game and people sort of mock cheering but as time has gone on I don't recall this really getting much of a reaction anymore.   However, I haven't been to a game in seven years so perhaps the kids have latched onto it in a fit of hipster irony.

I'm 22 and love the slippery rock connection. Never fails to be a conversation piece at the game. And love wearing my maize and blue slippery rock shirt around.
I will be going to the game and hope to bring a few friends to a cheaper day out.

Living in Western PA, I can tell you that non-Penn State college football isn't big in this part of the world.  Pitt doesn't draw well and I'm in the minority in that I'll give up entire Saturdays to just sit and watch football.

That said, I think you'll have a decent to strong showing from Western PA.  I bet a lot of SRU students caravan up to AA for the novelty of the game.  The smaller schools in the area (SRU, D-III schools Westminster, Grove City, Allegheny, etc) draw attendance pretty well from their smaller towns as most aren't staying home to watch Pitt, and I could see a lot of those kids meeting up with their friends from high school who go to SRU to tailgate and spend the day together.

These folks won't think twice about giving up a Saturday for the novelty of SRU football.  I surely won't make the trip up, as I don't want to miss out on watching a day's worth of football

Stubhub prices for the Man U - Real Madrid game are down under $100 with 4600 tickets available.  They've dropped about $8 a day over the past week.  I think they will be available at less than face value by the middle of next week. (hope so anyway, as I told my kids we would go but didn't buy tickets when available earlier).

but I'm being asked to pay premium prices for a not so premium season ticket package this year.  Figuring in food, gas and ticket costs a Saturday in AA for a Michigan game  is about $250 for two people and I get to do that 7 times this year, and I consider my trips to be pretty no frills adventures.

Even with $20 tickets Slippery Rock would run me about $150.  8 trips to AA at those costs is a bit much for something I might not really enjoy that much.

Remember, though, that it was a "Band Day."  (OK, you probably don't remember, but I do).  "Band Day" meant about 5,000-10,000 high school band members with probably 2-4 family members each.  Without a draw like Band Day, it wouldn't have hit 40,000--note that the Slippery Rock v Wayne State game in 1981, which was not Band Day, only drew about 35,000.

Actually, that 1981 game with Wayne State only happened after the athletic directors at Wayne State and a few other Michigan D-II schools complained loudly in the papers that Michigan was hosting 2 teams from Pennsylvania, and Michigan should be promoting football in their own state instead.

I am 26, a new UM fan, and I would DEFINITELY go if I was still in Ann Arbor. $20 is not a big investment, and it's one of those "go for the experience" kind of deals.

The Slippery Rock tradition is fun, and the crowd goes wild every time they show the score DESPITE the fact that half the people have no idea WHY we care about them (I only know because I did some Google searching).

Yes, it isn't going to be great football, but who cares? SRU only plays at the Big House once in a blue moon, and if the choice is between going to the game or sitting around catching up on your favorite new show on Netflix, I don't see why you wouldn't go.

Also, the idea that there won't be energy has got to be false. Everybody there will be rooting for Slippery Rock. They are America's favorite non-D1 team.

I'm going. With the family pack it's an easy way to get my (at the time of the game) 10 month old daughter to the Big House without having to actually worry about having to stay, etc the entire game. (No real stakes in the game so I can pay attention to her, the crowd won't be big which makes life a lot easier, and it'll be fun.)
