When watching UM teams on television the bright yellow on the team and the crowd and Shirts etc POP on the screen and you can see the Michigan crowd in vast numbers at any venue and it just looks great...Go back and watch the Michigan-Syracuse Final Four and the bright yellow was everywhere you looked.
Its just a visual thing..The ND game under the lights is another example..It looked Massive and Impressive because the entire stadium was bright yellow..
but thats just my two cents worth

Everyone on this thread is attributing the uniform change to Harbaugh, but perhaps they have the wrong Jim.
UM AD Jim Hackett graduated from Michigan in 1977 and would have played on the football team from 1973 through 1976. That means he would have actually worn that uniform when he suited up for the maize and blue (and white).
The last appearance for this uniform combination was the 1976 Orange Bowl. According to Coach Schembechler, "if maize pants can get done at home, they can get it done on the road too". Michigan was back in the maize pants for the 1976 season.

With a tip of the cap to the past. Probably a combination of Hackett being there for them and Harbaugh seeing his idol Leach wearing them.
