"Where were you when...?" (Michigan Edition)

Submitted by MaizeBlueA2 on April 13th, 2022 at 1:37 PM

So I'm watching the UFR loop of the Haskins run on the front page for the 19th time in a row, and to this day I can't believe how unbelievable that game was. It gives me chills. I remember where I was, but thought to myself, "I wonder what everyone else was doing at this moment?"

So...I thought it may be fun to play a little game of "where were you when...?"

Where were you when:

  • Haskins hurdled that fool in the OSU game this year
  • Trey Burke made "The Shot"
  • Braylonfest became Braylonfest
  • "I can't believe this! Roy Roooundtree!"
  • "TOUCHDOWN, MANNINGHAM! MICHIGAN WINS!"
  • Jordan Poole ripped Houston's heart out
  • Jabrill's Heisman return against Rutgers was called back by a bogus flag
  • DPJ streaked down the sidelines before hitting the Paul Bunyan pose.

...feel free to add your own!

Davy Found

My dad had just had a stroke 4 years ago, and I was back in Ann Arbor staying with my Mom. At the time we didn't know if my dad would live or die; he was still at UM hospital, given a 3% chance to live.

My Mom, my brothers and I watched all the Big Ten Tournament games and NCAA games in his hospital room, hoping our energy would be a boost to him. The Big Ten Tournament run was thrilling and miraculous, but then Houston and that tough guard they had looked like they were gonna take us out in the 2nd round. We were all completely deflated... when suddenly, Jordan Poole hit the most incredible and dramatic shot I've ever seen in a Michigan game. Bedlam! I think it woke my Dad up from his semiconsciousness.

These days, he is back at home - severely diminished, but happy to be alive, meeting new grandchildren, creating new memories, and watching more Michigan football, basketball, and Tigers games with his wife of 54 years. He has overcome the odds at the same unbelievable level that that Jordan Poole shot did.  GO BLUE

I was at the Big House in absolute disbelief for the Haskins hurdle. Before that play, my BPONE was getting annoyed that we were going down the field so fast on that drive; I wanted us to try to run the clock out or score as close to 0:00 as possible to avoid letting OSU have some crazy comeback opportunity. But that run and hurdle is what finally broke my BPONE. I was absolutely delirious and finally believing that we’d win. And then I wanted paydirt for Haskins TD #5 and to the run up the score.

It's funny you mention the BPONE at HH's hurdle because I too had not yet been convinced we were going to win yet.  It was the next play, when OSU let HH walk in, not because they'd given up, but because they knew they had to get the ball back.  When that hail-mary-like desperation registered in my brain, I gasped because I knew then it was over.

My BPONE was high in the 4th quarter.  I was at a family gathering and I rose to my feet during the run, then loudly cheered after the hurdle.  We were already watching late because getting the family together means we never start the games on time.  Just after the hurdle, my sister in law received a text, and her body visibly relaxed, but she tried to hide it.  I knew Michigan had won at that point and could relax and enjoy the rest of the game.  My favorite call of the game was the emphatic "O-Ja-Bo".  After the game we replayed the last few minutes of the game so many times and just soaked it in.

Haskins hurdled that fool in the OSU game this year

Watching the game at home on my new giant TV. My family (dad, brother's in law) usually watches the game together, but we grew tired of having a depressing post-Thanksgiving day so we decided not to watch together and honestly, it was kind of nice.

 Trey Burke made "The Shot"

In a 15 passenger van on my way to a college rowing regatta. Was getting updates from my smartphone (thank god I finally got one).

 Braylonfest became Braylonfest

I was 13 or 14, watching it at home with my dad. Awesome game.

"TOUCHDOWN, MANNINGHAM! MICHIGAN WINS!"

At a Chilis with my dad and high school friend.

Jordan Poole ripped Houston's heart out

Bachelor party in Arizona. Was a great weekend full of golf and Michigan basketball making a run.

DPJ streaked down the sidelines before hitting the Paul Bunyan pose.

Watched that game in my apartment in Boston. My wife (then girlfriend) was sitting next to me, barely paying attention but definitely noticed the anxiety I had until Michigan pulled away.

The other ones I don't remember. 1 that I do remember was the '06 PSU game when Branch almost killed Morelli. Had just gotten home from the hospital after breaking my leg. Watched the game on the couch with my mom and dad, who went out and got me crab legs from Outback because of the previously mentioned broken leg.

I watched The Game from home (Switzerland) via a Skype call with my friend in Albany who pointed his laptop at his TV.

The moments I hold onto most:

1. very early in the game, Haskins had a burly run up the middle that went for something like 12 yards. It was the second or third like that. And we both blurted out “Biakabatuka.” This was the moment when we could see that it could actually be one of those games.

2. The Josh Ross 3rd down stop early 3rd quarter. This was the moment we actually felt real hope.

The hurdle was also a wonderful  moment of elation. But for me the two above had the power.

  • Haskins hurdled that fool in the OSU game this year
    • At home which is nothing special, but I will never forget my feelings during that game. I don't really count when Hoke beat Fickell, so this was the first time Michigan had beaten OSU since I became a fan of football in 2005.
  • Trey Burke made "The Shot"
    • Probably at home again.
  • Braylonfest became Braylonfest
    • This happened the year before I really got into football.
  • "I can't believe this! Roy Roooundtree!"
    • At home, screaming at the top of my lungs and pissing off everyone in my home who was trying to sleep.
  • "TOUCHDOWN, MANNINGHAM! MICHIGAN WINS!"
    • At home again.
  • Jordan Poole ripped Houston's heart out
    • At home, but I had actually turned that game off with a few seconds left because I assumed we were going to lose and was too frustrated to keep watching. My friend texted me about it, so I turned it back on and was astonished.
  • Jabrill's Heisman return against Rutgers was called back by a bogus flag
    • I don't really remember this one at all.
  • DPJ streaked down the sidelines before hitting the Paul Bunyan pose.
    • At my in-laws, happy as can be.

I was in my seats in section 44 when Haskins hurdled that fool vs. OSU.

Was alone in my family room for Burke.  The scream/noise that came out of my mouth was probably indescribable.

Was in my seats for the first UTL.  That was a great atmosphere!

Was watching in my buddy's media room for Poole.

Was sitting in the rain at Rutgers for Jabrill's return.  Was comical to see the student section completely empty after halftime.  By the 4th quarter, all of the Rutgers fans had departed.  The Rutgers band even played The Victors toward the end of the game.

Was in that tacky EL stadium for DPJ's Paul Bunyan pose.

Not sure if I was at Braylonfest or not.  Not sure where I was for Manningham.

EDIT:  If Braylonfest was the game where Drew Stanton got injured, I was at that game!

exactly.  Not even a mention of the 1997 OSU Game in Ann Arbor when the students stormed the President's House and sang to him?

I was working at the Burger King on South U.  I got out of work at 4pm and there were Ann Arbor Police and Washtenaw Sheriffs in full riot gear.  They were on every corner and didn't know the score of the game, because cell phones were still very new.  I walked back to W. Quad to watch the end of the game.  Amazing times.

Yes, intentionally wanted to keep it within the last 20 years.

I could obviously done both punt returns, the Brady/Bama game...if I wanted horror, I could've done Kordell Stewart or the Timeout.

But then people would complaining they weren't alive. Cause that's all people do, sarcasm and complain, lol.

Haskins: Watching at home with my son who was home from college.

Poole: My son had gone to bed when it looked like Houston had won the game. He was just drifting off to sleep when I ran in to get him for the final play. Everyone else was sleeping, so we ran around the living room silently screaming and trying to keep quite and not wake the house.

The rest I don't remember.

Where were you when Rumeal hit the FTs against Seton Hall? I was watching in someone else's dorm room on North Campus, then riding the bus down to Central Campus for the 2nd celebration in 3 days. The driver wouldn't let us on with open beer bottles so I had to slip an open Lowenbrau bottle in my inside coat pocket. Standing room only on the bus, most of the beer ended up spilled on me. That's OK because I had 2 unopened ones in other pockets.

This is complete fluff.

But it's fun fluff.

  • Haskins hurdled that fool in the OSU game this year

In my den watching the game with the family.

  • Trey Burke made "The Shot"

Watching at home alone with my 1-year-old daughter while my wife and other daughter were at an event at church. I was sitting on the floor of the living room of the apartment we lived in at the time, using two of the four free hours you used to get to watch March Madness online if you didn't have a subscription, which I couldn't afford.

I went absolutely bananas. My daughter had no idea why.

  • Braylonfest became Braylonfest

I was at the game with my wife. After Caulcrick scored that TD in the fourth quarter to put us down 17, my wife, who was cold and needed to use the restroom, asked if it was time to leave. I said, "let's wait to see what happens on this drive."

We left two hours later.

  • "I can't believe this! Roy Roooundtree!"

Apartment living room, my sister was in town.

  • "TOUCHDOWN, MANNINGHAM! MICHIGAN WINS!"

Apartment in Lancaster, California. We were flat broke and tv was out of the question; I was listening to the afternoon Fox Sports radio show. This moment, of course, happened at virtually the same moment as the Bush Push happened at Notre Dame in what remains perhaps the best single day of college football ever. I was listening for updates, which they were giving alongside USC-ND updates. Just as the Bush Push happened and they discussed it on the program, the time reached the top of the hour and they had to go to break, I believe for a score update. I had heard that Michigan was driving and I was WAITING TO HEAR WHAT HAPPENED C'MON WHAT'S THE SCORE and then, finally, I was told that we won on the final play, and I went nuts.

That Monday Colin Cowherd opened his national show, not with talking, but by simply playing the radio calls of the Minnesota-Wisconsin ending, our game, and the Bush Push. Because college football is just that good.

  • Jordan Poole ripped Houston's heart out

Den of my house. Everyone else in the house was asleep at the time.

They did not remain asleep.

  • Jabrill's Heisman return against Rutgers was called back by a bogus flag

Following the game in my office while getting work done.

  • DPJ streaked down the sidelines before hitting the Paul Bunyan pose.

Watching on tv in my den.

Bonus:

Where were you when Phil Brabbs kicked the game-winner against Washington?

At the game with my dad who was dying of cancer. He struggled a bit to breathe and to walk, so we were ready to leave as soon as the game ended and stood in the section 18 exit to watch.

So we saw the kick from directly behind. Saw it go straight. Saw the crowd cheer. I'm glad Brabbs, himself a cancer survivor, is the one who kicked it.

It was the last game we ever attended together.
