Where did the forum item on DD/GBMW/Webb go to?
So am I going nuts again, or did somebody pull down the forum topic concerning GBMW's assertion that RR was taking twice the number of allegedly academically marginal kids as Carr and that Brandon et al were reining things in? If so, why? (aside from the fact that I think the underlying assumption is unverifiable bullshit, that is...)
I didn't see it, but that would be an interesting notion to consider. I haven't been following Michigan recruiting long enough to know whether Rodriguez is offering more of those guys or not. But it sure seems that there are more Antonio Kinards, Justin Turners, Adrian Wittys, Demar Dorseys, Taylor Hills, etc. in the past couple years than there used to be. I remember Quintin Woods and Marques Slocum from the Carr years, but that's about it...
basically GBMW stated that they had inside info from the athletic department that the new regime wants to pull back on the number of academically-marginal recruits (which went from 5-6 with Carr to around 12 with RR) and Dorsey may be a signal of this influence as he may clear NCAA but not UM admissions. A signal to RR from the new regime, I mean. Sam Webb mentioned yesterday, or day before, that Dorsey and Kinard are basically toast. I asserted that SW and GBMW both may have inside info and that we can forget about both recruits. GBMW however does mention a third who likely will not make it (from potential inside info).
I think the topic was pulled because someone started quoting GBMW and pulling direct their article. not sure though. its all speculation, i just tried to pull the two assertions together...
GBMW is free on the Web. There's no prohibition from pulling from their article.

Linking just identifies the source; it alone doesn't immunize excessive republishing that goes beyond fair use against a claim of copyright infringement.
If these kids clear NCAA requirements, what is UofM admissions consider academically margional? I would guess that there are only 2-3 kids each year (if that), not counting walk-ons, that could actually qualify for UofM academically. It seems a little hypocritical to say, 'we will lower admissions standards, but not that far.'
True, but they also have to take into account the players who they believe can actually maintain a good enough GPA while in school. There is a big difference between a guy who wouldn't have been accepted to UofM under normal circumstances but would have attended college anyways, and a guy who barely did well enough in high school to stay eligible.
Well, they have the point system now. I would guess being a scholarship player is probably worth a good number of points but if low grades and test scores might skim someone past the NCAA without getting them enough points to get in. Like I said, just a guess.
It's my impression that the point system disappeared after the supreme court ruling, as the assignation of points for underrepresented minority status (IIRC, the same number of points as "recruited athlete") was the specific element of UM's undergrad admissions process that the SC found unconstitutional.
Yea, the official point system went away and now they have people evaluate each one. Essentially, they don't have a set standard, but each person uses their own judgement (an implied point system) to allow someone in. It's all the same for these kids anyway. If they are scraping by NCAA, then they won't get into the school. They are going to have to do better in GPA or test scores to get someone to allow them in.
If we are talking about guys who never ended up qualifying, Reggie Benton comes to mind, too, but I don't think he cleared NCAA requirements.
Either Brian/Tim/Paul axed it because of the dodgy info from GBMW or Geaux Blue deleted it because somebody challenged him.
As for the issue at hand.
Slocum, Patilla, Germany and so on and so on. Carr brought in plenty of academic question marks. So too is Rodriguez. I think its because both are coaches at a major college football institution.

As a lifelong fan and follower of this program, I am not concered in the least about this issue. Rodriguez is bringing plenty of quality, smart kids in.

i do agree you have to take GBMW with a grain of salt. i did think it was interesting that the two separate assertions on Dorsey came at about the same time with very similar fortitude.
one thing i have to agree with is that RR is bringing in plenty of quality, smart, good kids. and unlike other NC-level coaches appears to be doing it by promising nothing but a great education, Barwis gym, and a chance to compete.
i look forward to RR taking M Football to NC's with smart, quality kids, and doing it all within compliance with NCAA.
bringing in academically-marginal kids is toe-ing-the-line like Practicegate. where do you draw the line? and who sets that line? those are the questions it sounds as if may be playing into Dorsey's eligibility (if you wish to believe the assertions by GBMW)....
+1 to you. Yes, there were plenty of borderline guys in the past, before RR. Like everything else, Carr won so people were less concerned. And when they didn't make it, I think many had the perception that they could not get qualified for Michigan b/c it had such stringent academic requirements. There is a kernel of truth to that but I think it's less of an issue than many people like to believe.
Normally I wouldn't say this, but our football program is in state of calamity....
If Dorsey clears the NCAAs, but not Michigan's admissions - I will be very pissed off. Especially if a story is leaked how some people at the top wanted to keep him away because of his past / current issue with grades.
We seriously need a Sticky thread to say when and why posts get taken down. My biggest pet peeve is knowing that I posted somewhere, but not being able to find it because it was taken down without warning and for no apparent reason.
It must be tough moderating a board with so many people, so many potential controversial subjects, and so many strong opinions. When they pull or lock a thread, it can often be frustrating, but a general rule of thumb is that the more someone is frustrated at not being able to do a knee-jerk post, the more appropriate the removal or lockdown of the thread is.
I think the degree of moderation here helps to seperate mgoblog from countless other message boards, and I am thankful for it.

I agree with you. However, I'm not upset that they took it down. I'm upset that we don't know why they took it down. Most of the time it is obvious why a thread gets pulled, but when it isn't, we always get one of these threads trying to figure it out.
Just listen to Devin Gardner, Jeremy Jackson, or Stephen Hopkins talk to the camera. This are kids who hold themselves to high standards and represent their school well. Rod has a track record that proves he's all about character and work ethic even if grades have taken a mild back seat in high school for some kids. I don't see Brandon as the kind of superficial cunt who will "rein in" Rod's recruiting for the sake of a small part of an image that few people care about.
The topic was probably pulled because it was on its way to generating a lot of replies, and within hours we would have seen a highly speculative Freep story on Dorsey. The whole, "not doing a reporter's job for them" aspect would be my guess.
I think there have been a few more academically borderline players in the past couple years, and this could mainly be because these were players RR already had relationships with from his days at West Virginia(other than Dorsey). Either way, with increased knowledge of the recruiting process, I'm sure there were many borderline guys we just didn't know about in the past.

It is completely unprovable, unverified, and unsubstantiated. Nobody, not UM, not the students' high schools, not the students themselves, nor their parents, are going to provide any information about grades and eligibility, either about recruits under Carr or under RR. Given that the sources are anonymous, I think it's ridiculous to assume they are accurate. Since RR can't comment specifically on individual kid's grades, he couldn't really refute the charges in detail, even if he wanted to.
And unless I'm mistaken, RR can't just take kids just because he wants to; the kids have to meet certain eligibility standards that presumably have been in place since LC was coach. RR can't change those standards himself, so what kids are signed are kids who would have qualified under Lloyd. The idea that there were no academic washouts under LC is just as stupid as the meme that every kid who played for him was a Boy Scout choir boy who had no "character" issues.
Absent any confirmation from David Brandon or the Athletic Department, GBMW's allegations are complete and total bullshit.

I'd guess there is a new moderator in the mix, someone not quite sure how they want to do things (no threads about sports alumni since mine have been switched to OT, as far as I'm aware, so I imagine his edit of my thread title was a failed experiment). Which is fine with me -- I've been a moderator for other things, and it can be tricky deciding where to draw the lines.

sometimes threads are renamed to make them obvious for their topic. i've renamed some when it was big news to avoid a) multiple posting due to people not knowing what it was about or b) people skipping bc they don't know the subject matter. your thread title is reasonable though so it's back to what it was.
also i don't know who deleted the webb post but my guess is bc it was "insider info" that could be considered disparaging given it discusses with no proof the academic ineligibility of prospects. i wouldn't want my grades from college posted, much less a 17-18 yr old kid's HS grades. just a guess though.
