When's it ok to have the Mattison discussion?

Submitted by bamf16 on

Mattison's defenses have done well against traditional NFL/ProStyle offenses (and those with horrible talent deficiencies).

But ND puts up 21 in the first half while UM looks clueless, K-State puts up 31, OSU 42, Indiana 47...

It's the same thing time and time again.  Teams run tempo offenses and UM is trying to rotate guys on the field, play traditional SDE and WDE positions, and a vanilla DL scheme with constant DL rotation and no chance for players to feel out the OL.  And the defense is doing the same stuff today that got them beat last season.  The. same. thing.

If you think the struggles on one side of the ball don't affect the other.  The offense has run 29 plays.  That's low for an NFL half, let alone college where the clock stoppages and tempo offenses lead to more plays run.

ND's offense has run 48 plays and dominated play.

And the defense isn't even close to making plays or doing anything to stop ND.

But the secondary did not struggle because the QB had too much time.  They just couldn't cover anyone or anything.  The slants struck home time after time -- that is not because of a lack of pressure.  We have a real problem now that our "press" db play can't cover anyone.  Mattison needs to make some change before we play another good team.  It would be nice to see Peppers at cornerback.  I'm afraid Countess simply lacks the quickness.

Good thing we can't move the god damn ball on a team with 4 backups playing..  It is about time to dismiss Hoke.. after this loss he will be 1-11 on the road against ranked teams?

Good try coach

When the ball is being thrown in under 2 seconds, it's tough to bring blitzes from the second and third levels.  The pressure has to come from the line.  To do that...

1. The four DL have to get pressure themselves.  Not Beyer's strength and Jack Miller doesn't play center for ND.

2. The DL has to stunt and be somewhat unpredictable.  They've done none of that yet; they haven't even tried.

3. Put 8 or 9 guys on the line and try to disguise what's coming.  Make Golson guess who's blitzing, who's not, or if anyone's even coming at all.

But instead, they're lacking aggression on defense and ND is having its way.
