What have you noticed on your rewatch?

Like many (most? all?) I have rewatched the the game.   For me it has been twice over the weekend and I am sure I will watch it a few more times this week.

What have you noticed on your rewatch that you didn't notice watching live (or in person if you were there)?

Fun thing:   CJ (I think) was knocked down on Loveland TD pass.   He got up and signaled TD while the ball was still in the air.

Football thing:   On the MS TD breakup it is amazing how far he came to make that play.  He was positioned on the left side of the defense and must have made up 20 yards to make that play.   I'm not so sure it was even his guy.

I agree, as I have stated in this thread.  I believe the ref was in "Get the game over with" mode at that point and just blew his whistle too soon.

Once he realized his mistake, his fall back was to claim that he blew the whistle because he "believed" Stroud's forward progress had been stopped, this not reviewable...

I just went back and watched. You have to get to the 2nd or 3rd replay because both the live view and first replay immediately cuts away. But after OSU gets lined up again they show a 3rd look. But 91 - Upshaw runs directly to the ball and picks it up. He doesn't try to return it or anything but holds it up to the refs like "yeah I recovered it!"

On rewatch, the first half does not feel as bad to me.  OSU's offense moved the ball a lot, but it didn't feel like 2018 and 2019.  Of course, on the rewatch, you have a different context.

Another thing that really stands out on rewatch is the body language of the OSU players.  They looked really dejected for the whole second half.

Based on the last two years . . . MSU really sucks on defense against OSU.

Given that MSU typically plays us fairly well on defense, It gives OSU a false sense of confidence that they can run up the score early against us like they do against them.

You can see watching this game how it leads to their frustration and eventual panic when they realize they can't.

This could be entertaining if anyone knows.  What happened to Woodson?  He did the Fox pregame and then was a no show for the post game.

I want to believe he just went MIA to celebrate on the field with the team and in the locker room, or he probably lost his voice.

For me, it was the open field tackling by Michigan. There were other tackles made that limited OSU from YAC. On the ground, very few mistackles. There were is a few misses here there but that always happens.

So much credit should be given on how to teach our guys on how to tackle. They looked like pros out there. Plus there were often times, many hats involved in the tackle. That turned out to be a key to winning the game as much as we had critical chunk plays on offense (IMO).

Stroud’s completion percentage was higher in 2021 (with the weather - snow & wind, flu, and everything else that went on) - than it was in a sunny, warm, home field this past weekend.

And, Stroud’s yards per attempt were higher in “Ann Arbor blizzard conditions” - on the road, than they were in a sunshine filled Shoe.

That the game felt like it was decided in the sequence of the late third quarter from the time of the blown fake punt through the drive featuring the Mullings  jump pad. That drive was mostly 5-10 yd plays by McCarthy and Edwards and it was the first time that I could be sure that moving the ball wasn’t just a matter of a few lucky plays.

Olu repeatedly pounding his fist with a "hulk smash" gesture in the long drive huddle.  Awesome.  That was essentially the moment the line took control of the game.  He was feeling it.

There is no comparison between the two coaching staffs.

FWIW, I hope Gene Smith gives every coach on their staff a raise - extends their contracts - and, insists on immense buyout clauses so their current staff never leaves.

Fun thing - Both the first CJ TD, and CJ getting up and signaling TD with the ball in the air.

Football thing - how utterly wide open Roman Wilson was on CJ's first TD.  You see him running with Johnson looking for someone to block.  What you don't notice is what he did to his safety to get there.  It was so obscene that you shouldn't let your wife and daughters watch it.  If the hot route is to Wilson over the middle, we never would have seen a red jersey in the TV picture as he waltzed into the EZ.  I'm pretty sure CJ used it as inspiration for his own obscenely disgusting abuse of a safety on his next catch...

This game ended in the 4th quarter just like last year . . . OSU is down 8 and chasing Michigan, trying to keep up.  And the Michigan offense keeps scoring rushing TDs to never let them get closer, finally shutting the door with a back-breaking TD.

Another thing that I noticed on the rewatch -- there was a disappointing lack of dejected OSU fan shots in the fourth quarter by Fox.  I wanted so badly to see bemused guys sitting there with a look of disgust on their face or -- even better -- cheerleaders crying.  We did get an OSU player crying after the game at least.

Couple of things I noticed on rewatch.

  1. After Blake Corum's 2nd run, he trots over to the sideline and mentions something to Mike Hart, likely about the condition of his knee. Mike sort of throws his hands up and walks away. Pretty sure he said something like "oh were fucked now".
  2. After OSU drives right down the field and scores, we are in 3rd and long, on the no of a 3 and out. Crowd was in a frenzy. Enter CJ with a critical catch to move the chains. If we go 3 and out there, that's really bad news.
  3. The 1st TD by CJ was on another 3rd down. Great play by JJ to get him the ball, and great play by CJ to juke those 2 guys to get in the end zone. This kept us in the game when things looked pretty dim.
  4. Agree with the other posters, Sainristil's breakup not only took 4 points off the board, it kept it a 2 score game. This really took the wind out of their sales after that long drive.
  5. On CJ Stroud's interception, it looks like his knee was down before he threw the ball. Lucky for us it was not reviewed.
  6. I am not sure why CJ Stroud is moping on that 4th and 6. The game is within 1 score in the 3rd. Seems to me the right thing to do was punt.
  7. But the 4th and 3, with 11 minutes to go down by 11 pts, not sure what Day was thinking there.
  8. Team did a good job of keeping their cool and not getting flagged. I saw multiple times where emotions could take over. I think it was Rod Moore who got head butted and asked for a flag. Ronny Bell was grabbed and manhandled well after the play, he is just chill holding his hands up. One guy was literally throwing punches around the numbers of one of our players as a play was ending. Yet we kept our cool and did not retaliate. Clearly we were well coached to keep our emotions in check, and it paid off.
  9. Just a reminder, no fumbles, no interceptions. I can't recall any sacks either. Well done boys.

Long time stalker here first time poster..... My thoughts on rewatch 3

1.  Remember when Don Brown played a ton of cover 0 with a blitz happy scheme and OSU would drop bombs on our heads? That looked familiar to me

2. You do not go from 10 yards rushing in the first half to utter rushing dominance in second half without seeing something and adjusting. The rushing game adjustments were terrific at halftime and maybe those were just waiting until OSU free'd us up a little scheme wise but picking their spots was just as key

3. McCarthy was magnificent. You saw first hand why he makes this team different. For as great as he was on the big plays he really managed this game well with decision making. He had one questionable play on the intentional grounding and call me a homer Stroud doesn't get that call IMO.

4. OSU looks mentally weak to me.... They did not deal with adversity in this game at all but instead they lost composure with multiple unsporstmanlike conduct penalties. The role of playing tight with all the pressure reversed in front of our eyes. It will be interesting to see how this plays out going forward.

5. Broyles Award: Jessee Minter

6. James Joseph Calling a converted LB jump pass in this game is exactly what I thought we were getting when he was hired. That's the gunslinger in him right there.

I have supreme confidence in this staff to game plan around opponents weaknesses and adjust like mad in game to give this team a chance to win every game they play. Michigan football is in such a great place thanks to James Joseph Harbaugh thank you sir!!

1.  How bad a job OSU coaches did.  They tried to load up to stop the run - without Corum - didn't do it anyway and gave away so much in the pass game.  On offense, they poorly used Stroud too and went away from crossing routes and simple possession like their scripted first drive which was really impressive.

2.  Pay Minter all of the money.  Little genius.  We crushed their run game for the most part and I didn't think our secondary could stand up to that passing attack but his disguises and scheme worked, and even though Stroud had time to throw, didn't matter.

3.  Mike S is the zero man.  Zero'd out everything.  As a former slot back, I love him.  It's insane the success he is having, the instincts he has, how well he hits (for a converted WR?) and now we have a DB who can catch too.

4.  JJ proves - 5 stars matter.  That was the game we needed him, and he delivered special performance.  Finally was allowed to use his legs (which improved how dangerous he was a thrower no doubt).  He is just a baby too.  Will put 15 lbs on for next year.  Watch out...Heisman front runner.

5.  Loved how involved all of our injured guys were- Morris, Corum and Shoe.  Just stand up dudes who gave whatever they could on and off field.  No street clothes for them and were there to take it on chin if they lost.  Impressive stuff.

6.  Was bugged by the inconsistency on the inconsistent forward progress rulings refs made (again), but again, couldn't believe the bone-headed plays OSU made just shooting themselves in the foot.  They blinked and looked like a MSU team out there when it mattered...was really odd on re-watch too...they killed themselves with flagrants and some ill timed penalties.

7.  I noticed this on first watch, but I think its even more noticeable on re-watch.  Our RBs were heads down and pretty nervous at beginning of game despite their being ample room to run.  Got armed tackled several times in exchange for over the top ball security.  The second they calmed down as game wears on, and line is gashing even bigger holes, Edwards is like "really?...okay" and you can almost see his body english grow and change.  I thought that was the coolest part of the game to me was just seeing dudes like him and CJ grow/develop/step up on the spot.  Literally the best outcome possible for this team.

The 11 Warriors commenters noticed this as well.  Their injured players were in street clothes, just milling around.  Their special teams player who got dinged up on the opening kickoff changed into street clothes at halftime.

Will Johnson seemed to have held up really well.  The only times we saw him were on short stuff that he tackled immediately, and I don't think he was targeted otherwise.  It doesn't seem like a coincidence that Harrison was also silent for big stretches of this game.

Did anyone else notice McCarthy or hear a whistle on his run in the 2nd half? I heard a whistle and it looked like JJ did as well, as he stopped and looked around for a split second. Then he continued to run and tried to jump as he was tackled. I have watched it a few time and I keep hearing and seeing the same thing.

On a side note, today is a great day to live in Ohio....

To me, the most indicative thing was JJ running for the first down and for the TD, and taking on OSU defenders in the process. Compare that to Stroud doing everything in his power to avoid any contact (and protect his draft status?). JJ sold out and was tough as nails. CJ wasn't willing to do whatever it took to win. That's the difference in the two programs right now.

When I watched live, I was certain that one punt bounced off Henning at the goal line. Watching it again, I couldn't come to a different conclusion. It looked like the ball hit him then changed direction.

After watching it several times at 0.25x speed, I'm still not 100% certain that ball did not touch Henning. But watching it at that speed enough times, it looks like the OSU player did dart his hand out and try to bat the ball so that it either stopped or hit AJ.

I finally, after watching it enough times, understand why we got the ball back. But I'm surprised no one mentioned how close that play came to disaster. Henning should have been nowhere near that ball, yet it passed within inches of him.

Sainristill's breakup in the endzone was the defensive play of the game, maybe play of the year.

JJ's tone setting power run was my personal favorite play on offense but still amazed by the breakaway speed on Donovan's first TD run.  I've probably watched it 20 times by now...  that's Bo Jackson level.  Lathan Ransom had an 8 yard head start running full speed with the angle and Donovan just blew past him.
