What does a "Silent Commit" really mean?

What does a Silent Commit mean, why do it, and how do the coaches perceive them? To me, it is like a really hot chick saying "I really like you and want to be your girlfriend but let's not be seen in public and don't tell anyone."

lets say for example that Carlo Kemp was a silent commit, the coach won't have to do a in home in Colorado on his way to San Jose to do a in home with another recruit. He can just give him a call which they do constantly. Even though a kid has commited they can call to keep in touch with them rather than do a in home unless they do a in home near by. Why call a commit? To gauge their intrest by the way they communicate on the phone .Do they seem like they are losing interest or does it sound like Uban Meyer just left his house or school? Or does it sound like they are excited that coach Harbaugh called their house?

The recruit can tweet we talked about Soccer and some life experiences, we talk all the time about all sorts of things. Its like I am so good, coach calls all the time. How many people can say that? I can say for sure that he does not call my house.

I always assumed it was when a recruit commited to a school using mime or via playing charades or something along those lines. I mean, I could see a staff and a recruit on Skype or FaceTime and instead of "I am committing to your school", for example, the recruit holds up six fingers, to which the staff replies "OK, six words....". Next, the recruit holds up one finger - "First word", then they intersect that finger with a finger from the opposite hand - "First syllable...". About six hours of painful guessing later, you get a silent commit.

It's pretty simple.

It's a kid who wants to commit, reserve a spot in a class, and not want all the dregs on social media, blogs (not this one, of course), and elsewhere to not issue insults, threats, and general what have you. For high four stars and five stars, it also gives them the opportunity to properly set up an announcement the way they want to without worrying that their school of choice has already filled their spot. This is a really special, unique, once-in-a-lifetime moment for many of these kids and should be enjoyed by them, the way they want to. Heck of a way to cap a thus successful high school career.

For instance, I want to commit but I need to convince my mother first.

But more than likely it's I want my moment on ESPN with hats in front of me, but don't let anyone take my spot in the meantime.  This of course leaves the team vulnerable to the player having a last minute change of heart.

standing at the altar, there is woman in a white dress, sometimes a priest is there, sometimes it's a judge, sometimes it's Joey Tribiani in a WW2 soldiers uniform. The man is usually openly committing to sleeping with one woman the rest of his life. The woman in the white dress is often silently committing to not sleep with any man for the rest of her life. Is that the silent commit we are talking about or have I confused this with marriage?

I think the term is meaningless and without a standard definition or context.

It's like when a buzzword or phrase like "take a flyer on a guy" or "drawing chalk" during the hoops tourney suddenly explodes and is being overused by all the talking heads.

Peters used the term but is that different than when TomVH uses it?

I like the analogy of the hot chick who doesn't want to be seen in public.
