This weekend's games - which are you most interested in...

Submitted by Amazinblu on November 2nd, 2022 at 10:53 AM

With the first CFP ranking release, a loss could have significant impact on a team's ranking.

This weekend has several games of interest to me, and those games include:

1. Tennessee at Georgia.  Hoping for a lopsided win by either team.

2. Bama at LSU.  Though it's a challenge to root for Brian Kelly, I'll be pulling for the Tigers over the Tide on Saturday evening.

3. Clemson at ND.  Again, not a fan of the Irish, but - their OL has definitely improved since their opener against the Bucks, and it's the only "real" opponent Clemson faces the remainder of the year.  Temperature shouldn't be an issue - but, it may be windy and rainy during parts of the game, so the ground game may be emphasized and IMO would benefit ND.  An Irish win would be very nice.

4. Texas Tech at TCU.  Can The Red Raiders of Texas Tech upset the Horned Frogs?  I think TCU wins, but - it's the only morning / noon start - of interest.

5. Wake Forest at NC State.  This should result in one of the two teams being unranked next week, and an associated weakening of Clemson's Strength of Record - but, it won't be interpreted that way.

6. Spartans at Illini.  Just general curiosity.  MSU will have a number of players suspended, and does Illinois have a passing game that will take advantage of the Spartans secondary.  More "what's in store" for Michigan on November 19th.

7. Michigan at Rutgers.  Should be a comfortable win for the Maize & Blue - more interest in the passing game and Red Zone offense.

What will you be watching and looking forward to?   Anything specifically, you're hoping to see?

I really want ND to beat Clemson. Clemson is not very good and they are ranked where they are purely on name recognition.  One loss and they would be completely out of the conversation.

Any undefeated team of a program that’s been to the playoffs six times with two national championships in four title game appearances will get the benefit of the doubt from pollsters. Michigan would too if we were in Clemson’s position.

That said, I agree that a loss to ND would probably sink Clemson’s playoff hopes since they have not looked like the dominant machine they were a few years ago.

True.  And ND played AT Syracuse while Clemson needed crap officiating to barely beat them at home.  These games happened in back to back weeks.

But on the flip side, Notre Dame is bipolar.  They looked annoyingly competent against BYU and Syracuse and were laughably bad against Stanford and Marshall.  They also seem to play much better on the road than at home.  So try and figure that out.

Actually, I think Iowa Purdue and Maryland Wisconsin are intriguing in terms of entertainment. Can Purdue overcome Iowa's defense and punter? Can Petras keep it up against Purdue's defense? In the other game, is Maryland for real? Is Wisconsin getting it back together after the coaching change? Of course, all these teams are still in the bowl picture; it's desperation time for most of them.

Two losses for Bama would ensure they are left out of the CFP, which is what I’m rooting for. Despise Kelly but I think he might be able to get it done on Saturday.

We also need the Irish to beat Clemson to remove them from the CFP discussion, which they have no business being in

I think Georgia beats Tennessee solely based on UT’s awful defense.

Illinois might beat Sparty worse than we did LOL.

I hope to see CJ Stokes, Isaiah Gash, Orji and Davis finish off the second half of the Rutgers game with Corum, Edwards, and McCarthy watching from the sideline cheering them on.

Jack, I guess my point is - that Cade would be healthy enough - and available - to both travel, and to be #2 on the depth chart for the remainder of the season.

Your point about RZ and what Orji might bring to the scheme / play calling in that part of the field is fair and valid.  Let's hope we can see the entire travel roster at some part of the game on Saturday evening.

TCU is going to lose at least two games going forward - they aren't going to go undefeated against TT, Texas, Baylor, and ISU + the Big 12 title game, especially considering they've been fortunate to play a bunch of backup QBs in a lot of their close wins.  So they're sort of out of it in my mind if UM and TCU finish with the same record unless they somehow go 11-1 and win the Big 12 title game while UM loses to OSU and missed the B1GCG.

The ACC is pretty bad so unless ND does UM a solid I don't see the Tigers losing a game.  So they're likely locked in if they survive this weekend.

Alabama needs to lose a game coming up and LSU is as good an option as anyone to pull it off.  They are decidedly worse offensively than last year and should probably already have 2 losses but if they somehow go undefeated the rest of the way then we're looking at at least 2 SEC teams in the playoffs and potentially a third.  So knocking them out earlier makes them purely spoilers for the SEC and I'm fine with that.

Illinois is going to pound MSU and it's going to be gross because it'll be so methodical.  And Maryland continuing to win would be nice because that'll only help SOS.

I'm keeping an eye on MD @ Wisconsin. We need another ranked team on our schedule and Maryland is our last shot.

If ND does what we hope, they'll get ranked. So here are three other games I'll keep an eye on.

#20 Syracuse @ Pitt (3:30 ACC Network)
#18 OK State @ Kansas (3:30 FS1)
#25 UCF @ Memphis (3:30 ESPN 2)
#24 Texas @ #13 Kansas State (7:00 FS1)

If a couple of those road teams lose, it can open slots for MD to slide in while eliminating some ranked teams for Clemson and TCU.

I am very curious to see how Tennessee fares against Georgia. I just don't get this No. 1 love for the Vols. They played Purdue in a shootout during their bowl game last season. I mean Georgia isn't lights out defensively, but it's got to be better than Tennessee.

It appears the football press is seeking to somehow vote in 3 SEC teams into the playoff hunt even  if the schedule doesn't warrant it nor does actual performance. It's almost as if reputation is the primary rationale for these ratings.

To me, this is the best Michigan team that Harbaugh has coached during his tenure in Ann Arbor. It is solid in every phase of the game, not explosive, but solid, which explains in part the reason it doesn't the national appreciation for its overall capability. Part of this, of course, was due to its weak OOC schedule, which, couldn't be helped. But it shouldn't be an anchor, either.

Michigan may have had more talented players on prior Harbaugh teams at various positions, but no team he has coached here has played more cohesively or consistently which is this team's hallmark and should be its lasting legacy. This team chokes its opponents to death with extreme prejudice.

At this point, I think Michigan is probably the best it has been in national contention than at any other stage during Harbaugh's run. We'll see if that bears out and turns The Game into another 2006 national showdown. First, we have to take care of business the next 3 weeks.

Based on that, I'll be watching Tenn-Ga and our game in Piscataway. Won't spend time watching Clemson unless the Tigers are on the ropes in South Bend because it will conflict with our game.

This absolutely is harbaughs best team. And I disagree with the “solid” part. We are explosive on defense and special teams. Offense is “solid” with room to grow. Hopefully the boys keep workin and preparing hard bc this is a special season so far.

I'm kind of annoyed that we're playing at night again--I hate waiting all day for the main event. However, Tenn at UGA is certainly worthy of my attention in the afternoon. I think UGA is the better team--even though they lost a lot of players from last year's defense they remain very stout. UT is the new shiny object in the mirror but I will be very surprised if they beat UGA in Athens, especially with the ~77th ranked defense.

Otherwise I'm rooting for LSU over Bama although I think Nick Saban is playing the "they're all counting us out" card to the hilt and will have them ready enough to win on the road. I'm confident that Clemson will lose to someone even though it's hard to say who that someone is; they just aren't that solid this year.

I could care less about the Big 12--all offense and no defense and a bunch of teams that are in no way among the top 4 in the country.

Meanwhile we shouldn't overlook Rutgers. It's a road game, at night, and no one really expects the game to be close, including me. The Scarlet Knights will come to play and Schiano is a solid coach when it comes to the fundamentals. Thankfully we are rock solid when it comes to those same fundamentals and even if it's somewhat closer than expected I think Michigan as the better team will prevail.

Me vs. Antlered Deer.  A little warm for my taste, but it looks like a beautiful weekend to be out in the woods.

Football wise -I can't say I want ND to win, but I want Clemson, Bama, and Tennesee to Lose big. Ill watch a game in the middle of the day when not in the stand. Probably TT vs. TCU

Now THAT is a good slate of games.  Tennessee/Georgia tops the list of curiosity.

LSU/Alabama *might* be intriguing depending on which teams show up.  They both look so different from week to week.

I’m understanding the need for Clemson to lose but I hope all of you who are rooting for Notre Dame will at least feel dirty inside.  Rooting for Notre Dame goes against everything I’ve ever believed in…it’s NOT going to be easy.

Clemson isn't even relevant to our playoff hopes. They win out, they are in. They lose 2 and they are out.

A 1-loss ACC champion Clemson is also in, unless there are 5 conference champions with 1 or less losses. And in that case a 1 loss Big 10 champion, no matter who it is, gets in over 1 loss ACC/Big 12/Pac 12 champs.

Things I desire:

ND to win this weekend, and then lose all remaining games.

GA/TN: to be a one sided blowout.  Probably favor GA here since they might get in anyway.

LSU over Bama big.

Illinois over MSU big.  So big that they can't even claim suspending players was relevant.

Stroud to throw 4 INTs and play so terrible he gets yanked for the backup (yes, I know that means the backup likely throws for 7 TDs).

1) UT@UGA. Rather see UGA win.

2) Clem@ND. I really like the ND Head Coach. Hoping for a solid ND victory.

3) MSU@IL. Let's see an IL blowout. Better for us to play and beat a higher ranked IL team in a few weeks.

4) MI@Rut. Actually #1 on my list but its the late game. RZ offense and passing woes should do much, much better. Put at least 50 pts on Rutgers, and hold them to 7 or less.

I will be focused on teams that can threaten a 1-loss UM team, which of course I don't want to happen. So, Clemson (50/50), TCU (going to win), USC (going to win), Bama, TN, Georgia, OSU (LOL NW).

I will also be watching Iowa, ILL and PSU games to see if they can improve our strength of schedule.

The big one is UM game and if they can get style points And if the passing game/RZ play shows up to increase their chances of going undefeated.

I don't know, Im in the minority here but I really want ND to lose. I want all of this Freeman momentum to be squashed. I want ND to be less and less relevant and more midwest recruiting battles to go UM's way.

While I can't stand Dabo & Clemson I don't see them as much of a threat. The CFP just let us know that a 1 loss Michigan team isn't getting into the CFP. They would take any 1 or 2 loss SEC team over 1 loss Michigan. Win out and its obviously a lock. I would -love- to play Clemson in the 1st round of the CFP after running the table.

Amazinblu

November 2nd, 2022 at 12:42 PM ^

nerv, it might be a detail item - but, a two loss SEC team?  The committee might rank that two loss SEC team over Michigan; however, I don't think a two loss SEC team makes the playoff - unless, that team is the SEC champ?

How would a two loss SEC champ occur?   If LSU defeats Bama this Saturday - and, runs the table - they would have defeated a (most likely) undefeated Georgia or Tennessee in the SEC Championship game.   This would mean - LSU, SEC champ with two losses.  The SEC East Division champ would have one loss, and - most likely, the loser of the GA / TN game would be a one loss team as well.
