Way OT - favorite sad songs??
Been here for 10+ years and this is my first OP so please be gentle. I’m looking for recommendations for sad songs. Genre doesn’t really matter - I like a little bit of everything.
Been going through a rough patch and always helps me to hear someone else in the same place. Whatcha got? And thanks in advance.
"Without You" Harry Nilsson
"Without You" -- Motley Crue
Specifically "How Soon Is Now", generally anything by The Smiths / Morrissey.?
Ain’t No Sunshine
That,
"Mad World" by Gary Jules and
"Hurt" the Johnny Cash version
Sound of Silence, the version by Disturbed. Truly haunting stuff.
Hope things get better for ya pal. As was once said in a Batman movie, the night is always darkest just before the dawn.
thanks for the tip and the well wishes
Anything by Elliot Smith. RIP.
wreck of the edmund fitzgerald - gordon lightfoot
in the living years - mike and the mechanics
but after the week we've had, this is like suggesting poison for a guy on death row....
thanks xm, really appreciate it - very familiar with gordon lightfoot (was my dad’s jam) and will check out the other one.
yes, may be playing with fire posing this question to the board this week
blessings to you, D-blue, during this rough patch.
in this world you will have tribulations, but be of good cheer, because He has overcome the world.
Grown Men Don't Cry - Tim McGraw
He Stopped Loving Her Today - George Jones
Country music is great when you are in a down period. That's how I got hooked on it over 20 years ago. Very relatable.
"Black Muddy River" by Grateful Dead
Jones' "The Grand Tour" is also amazing.
When I was in grad school at UM I did an Alternative Spring Break trip with a bunch of undergrads. At one point I was driving, and I put my George Jones tape in, which included both of those songs. They were asking me why I was playing such depressing music.
he stopped loving her is truly depressing - exactly what i’m looking for. thank you
Also, "Let's Just Kiss and Say Goodbye" by the Manhattans. Beautiful, sad, and overflowing with soul.
OP's name and post both check out here.
If you'd be in the mood for an instrumental, try Joe Henderson's cover of "Lazy Afternoon."
Bye Bye Beilein, by the Cavaliers. Currently stuck in my head.
A couple of songs from my era:
Freshman: Verve Pipe
Brick: Ben Folds Five
I'll second Brick. And will add "All At Sea" by Jamie Cullum. Peacefully sad.
Verve Pipe, man that takes me back to Eastown and the old Intersection.
Those smelly ass couches up front...
The Notre Dame Fight Song
The MSU one is even sadder. Just a bland, generic fight song.
Whiskey Lullaby - Brad Paisley & Alison Krauss
He Stopped Loving Her Today - George Jones
Cost of Livin' - Ronnie Dunn
Brad Paisley - Whiskey Lullaby
The Devil Makes Three - Goodbye Old Friend
Let Her Cry by Hootie & The Blowfish
I love melancholy music. For me, the saddest sad song is "On The Bus Mall" by The Decemberists. I don't know if I could call it my favorite, because it's so wrenching. Teenage runaways turning tricks and dying can be a bit much sometimes:
As 4 in the morning came on, cold and boring
We huddled close
In the bus stop enclosure enfolding
Our hands tightly holding
Just hit that up and I like it. So I added it to one of my playlists. Thanks.
Great song, I'm glad you like it.
Another sad song pro tip for the board: Don't listen to "Gold Dust" by Tori Amos when you're in the middle of cancer treatment. I don't think I'd blubbered like that since I was five.
The Weight/Mandolin Rain Live at the Belk Theatre by Bruce Hornsby
Be Alright by Dean Lewis
"Nothing but Sunshine" by Slug. It's a huge bummer, but the hook "It's all sunshine/nothing but sunshine" feels less ironic and more serious the more you hear it; the sunshine is really always there, even when the clouds cover it up.
Chris Cornell's cover of Nothing Compares is 100x better than the original. R.I.P. Chris
Yes. I had never heard it until after his death. Chills.
Beat me to it. This version destroys me every time.
I was going to mention this song as well. Lots of great sad songs from Cornell's solo career and from soundgarden.
Sara McLaughlin - Angel
Maybe random but I always thought Goodbye Blue Sky from The Wall soundtrack was way depressing.
Angel is sad, though I Will Remember You always gets me in the feelz
Love of My Life - Queen
Alone Again (Naturally) - Gilbert O'Sullivan. Saddest title with words and mood to match. Killer song.
Everybody's Talkin' - Nilsson. Especially effective as soundtrack to movie Midnight Cowboy
Alone Again - that was the one I was trying to think of when I saw the title of this thread.
Another sad and chilling song - little know - is Lamplight Symphony.
Many good suggestions already. I’ll +1 anything by the smiths. Staying with 80s new wave, I’ll throw in Somebody by Depeche Mode and Pictures of You by the Cure.
A few others in my rotation now include Boots of Spanish Leather by Bob Dylan, Clay Pigeons by Blaze Foley, Alone by Trampled by Turtles, The Twist by Frightened Rabbit, Sometime Around Midnight by Airborne toxic event.
But my all time favorite is Martha by Tom Waits.
The Cure was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame this year. While watching the ceremony on HBO, I was reminded of their album, Disintegration. The whole thing is incredible. There was a time when “albums” were produced. Disintegration is one of the best.
Chris Isaak has some really great sad songs, in addition to Wicked Game.
Certain Songs by The Hold Steady
Last Dance With Mary Jane - Tom Petty
Avenged Sevenfold - Dear God
R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts
Johnny Cash - Hurt remake
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Ben Folds Five - Brick
Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Follow You Into The Dark
Many good Death Cab For Cutie songs. I prefer " Tiny Vessels".
