Vegas odds if HE leaves
Heard this on radio on way home out here in Portland (believe it or not it's a college football town)
Thought about not posting cause I am a Harbaugh guy, but it is interesting
1. Bronco Mendenhall
2. David Shaw
3. Kyle Wittingham
I hope Harbaugh brings us back, got to beat Iowa.
But if he goes, I would want Chris Peterson #1, Kyle Wittingham would be my #2
If he goes, it will because he resigned at the end of the season
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:31 PM ^
IMHO the most realistic scenario is he and Warde allow him to coach out his contract (so two more seasons?) and then he’s probably going back to the NFL.
MAYBE by then Urban’s heat on the whole Zach Smith thing will die down. But I doubt it. Boosters and alums I don’t think would allow for that to happen.
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:58 PM ^
Some people are really loose with how they use a word like "never". Mad Hatter is saying an 0-10 vs. OSU Harbaugh still gets to write his own ending? Suuure.
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:21 PM ^
People have a fantasy about who Harbaugh is and what he's done.
Whatever magic he had is gone. People have no clue what's gonna happen just like the rest of us.
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:12 PM ^
I agree that he won't get fired (and shouldn't).....but I'm starting to think he might leave after this year. Do you think he enjoys this? You're a good NFL coach at 10-6. You're a crappy Michigan coach at 9-3.
We've seen no indication that he's going to beat OSU except in 2016....but that was with Hoke's players (thinking specifically about Wormley, Charlton, Glasgow and Hurst). Michigan won't sneak up on OSU (like Iowa or Purdue). How many losses to OSU are enough before he reconsiders his options? I'm thinking that 5 might do it.
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:07 PM ^
I pray Harbaugh stays if those 3 are leading candidates. (I know they aren't)
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:24 PM ^
How do you know? And who are the leading candidates, in your view?
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:09 PM ^
Like it or not Harbaugh's not going anywhere unless he wants to go. This is just clickbait unless and until he announces his retirement, and I don't see him hanging it up anytime soon.
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:11 PM ^
I probably shouldn't have posted.... I love Harbaugh, I sure hope he gets his "enthusiasm" back
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:11 PM ^

September 23rd, 2019 at 8:09 PM ^
David Shaw seems like a long shot and a terrible choice.
Come to UM and get beat in recruiting by his replacement at Stanford.
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:09 PM ^
Stanford really wasn't a force in recruiting pre-Harbaugh.
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:56 PM ^
Stanford won 1 game before Harbaugh got there. I'm talking about now and in the future.
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:27 PM ^
He ain't ready for this. And he won't have the institutional support and long leash of Harbaugh. Disaster waiting to happen.
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:09 PM ^
Im not advocating for JH to be gone just yet, but no top tier coach would leave (Riley or Meyer) to come here. Maybe Bronco.
What about Josh Heupel from UCF. That would get us away from the Michigan Man thing and bring a modern approach
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:29 PM ^
I don't want anyone who hasn't come up through a major program or NFL franchise and been at least a successful coordinator there, if not head coach, and really, Harbaugh's the only one with that pedigree. You aren't ready for this job coming from UCF...or WVU...or Ball State. Or even Iowa State.
September 24th, 2019 at 12:47 AM ^
I disagree completely. Just look at so many successful coaches (including Urban Meyer). They didn't have a great pedigree, just a great quick rise.
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:12 PM ^
Michigan fans deserve to suffer if they want to fire Harbaugh and test the waters. It's gonna be big time shocked pikachu face when none of the big names guys like to throw against the wall want to come to Ann Arbor. Hope you guys love Brady Hoke pt II
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:22 PM ^
Agree. Tho I’m not sure what a shocked pikachu face is? Is it anything like triangle face? I hate triangle face, it scares me
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:32 PM ^
Suffering like...
Not winning anything important? IE, the current guy?
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:53 PM ^
How quickly everyone forgets how bad the RR and Hoke years were. I’m willing to ride out a few more years before I’m even thinking of making a change. No one viable for Michigan makes me believe they’ll do better
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:04 PM ^
Harbaugh has only set himself apart from RR and Hoke through games against middling or even bad teams. Against high quality opponents, his results are not significantly better.
Literally no program in the country plays worse as an underdog than Michigan. Harbaugh is as culpable in that embarrassment as his predecessors.
September 23rd, 2019 at 10:43 PM ^
We lost a lot of games to awful teams under RR and Hoke. Consistently winning those games is a huge improvement. Downplaying that is a ridiculous take.
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:32 PM ^
We've at least been within striking distance of winning something important with Harbaugh, like a major rivalry game, the Big 10, or a shot at the CFP. Brady Hoke won some shit and then the program fell apart. Rich Rod never had us anywhere close.
Honestly, the only person ready for this job on that list is Urban Meyer. And he will never coach at Michigan...not just because the administration would never hire him. More importantly, he hates our ass and would never jump ship.
September 24th, 2019 at 10:44 AM ^
VENABLES + Elliott/Scott would be infinitely better.
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:10 PM ^
Or how about like not making a bowl game, or losing to Toledo, or narrowly escaping Akron. Come on, man. Did you just become a fan 4 years ago?
September 23rd, 2019 at 10:36 PM ^
Suffering like... Tennessee.
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:13 PM ^
If those are our three best options, then you might as well retain Harbaugh if he wants to stay. None of those guys will beat OSU.
Chris Petersen will never leave the Pacific Northwest. He could’ve had literally any job he wanted during his Boise State years, and probably still can. He was always candidate numero uno for every big job opening, Michigan, Auburn, Penn State, USC, Texas, you name it. And yet he chose to stay in the Northwest for a good, but not great Washington job. Only job he’d leave for at this point is if the Seahawks want him after Carroll retires.
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:15 PM ^
I know.. but I like the way he runs a program. He is a class act.
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:34 PM ^
That's the thing. Who wants to come here? No one you want.
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:14 PM ^
This isn't something I want to talk about at all. I'm a glass-half-full kind of guy and even I am frustrated, but this fanbase has a subsection that is so knee jerky. I was at the game and yes it sucked. Just like everybody else I was yelling to air it out. For me it's hard to put all of this on coaching. We've seen all of the pictures and videos of how open some players are, but Patterson doesn't see them. So how can we blame the play calls if these players are wide open? I think a lot of this is on player execution. Not all of it because the defense did get gashed. It'll be a long time before I'm on the fire Harbaugh bandwagon, if ever. Everyone wanted a new offense and the man made the change. That takes a lot of stones to go against everything you believe. Unfortunately, the transitions not going as smoothly as we all hoped.
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:37 PM ^
Amen. Just gonna be a rough year. Those happen sometimes...even when Urban Meyer had those at UF, for those of you who care. We've had better years than this--last year was one--and we'll have better ones in the future. That's pretty good. I can't say I'm that confident we'll be in the same place if we pick one of the names on this list.
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:14 PM ^
FUCK no. I'd take Matt Campbell over any of those dudes mentioned. I could probably mention 5 more I'd rather have if I wasn't drinking.
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:56 PM ^
Just curious, what is it about Matt Campbell that has everyone swooning all the time? Looking at his HC record isn’t very inspiring...
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:10 PM ^
Other than ... Earle Bruce (!), he is the only Iowa State coach in the modern era to clear .500:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iowa_State_Cyclones_football
Could he move a historically very good school (Michigan) to the top tier (Alabama)? Not sure ...
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:41 PM ^
Probably not. 8 wins at ISU is an easier job than 11 wins at U of M. And do you really think Campbell can deliver the top 5 recruiting classes we all seem to expect year in and year out, all you star gazers? Or the great coaching staffs with excellent coordinators? Does anyone want to work for or play for Matt Campbell? Not as much as they want to work or play for Jim Harbaugh, even with this shitty start to the year.
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:47 PM ^
Matt Campbell is clearly a good coach, but my issue with him is that if you hired him, you would be basically replacing a solid coach that can't beat his main rival and has never won anything with a less experienced solid coach who can't beat his rival and has never won anything.
IF Harbaugh leaves, we need a coach to take us over the hump from solid team to elite national title contender, and not much about Campbell suggests that he would be that, yet.
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:16 PM ^
Have you seen the improvement from Iowa St pre-and-then-post Matt Campbell?!?!??!
That dude is legit. I'd even give PJ Fleck a running shot. Recruiting for Minny? Can you imagine that kind of task vs Michigan? I'd take both those names ove any mentioned in the OP. Sorry, not sorry.
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:42 PM ^
U see WVU pre and post Rich Rod? Or Ball State pre and post Hoke?
How about Michigan pre and post those two coaches?
How about Michigan, Stanford, and the 49ers pre and post Harbaugh?
September 23rd, 2019 at 11:07 PM ^
Jesus you may the most doom and gloom poster I've ever read. You must be a treat to be around. Your takes are incredibly one sided.
Campbell has beaten more top 10 teams in three years than Harbaugh has in five (#3 Oklahoma with Baker Mayfield, #4 TCU, #6 WVU). He has beaten more top 25 teams on the road while at Toledo, than Harbaugh has at Michigan.
MC is at Iowa State, the dumpster of the Big 12. Winning 8 at ISU is the equivalent to winning 10-11 at Michigan.
Do a tad bit of research. Geesh
What has Harbaugh accomplished at Michigan? Don't feed me the Stanford, or San Fran history. None of that matter at Michigan. BTW, Lovie Smith also coached in the Super Bowl. Huray!
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:14 PM ^
Can we take the Raiders coach since its obvious he will go there?
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:15 PM ^
If it happens......I would see how much Bob Stoops loves the xfl
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:50 PM ^
Zero chance Bob Stoops is coming back to college football. Coaching in the XFL is way less of a commitment than coaching at a blue blood program. You have to recruit, work over donors, make sure kids go to class and not take money, and deal with media out for blood when you lose.
If Bob Stoops didn't mind that, he would still be at Oklahoma.
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:17 PM ^
I am so glad this didn't turn into an Anti- Harbaugh discussion (yet)
Hopefully this list is a reality check for some, Vegas always knows
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:25 PM ^
It's the way the team looks recently and how Harbaugh sounds in his recent interviews...
In a couple weeks let's come back to this conversation.
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:18 PM ^
My god..... smh
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:20 PM ^
I want Harbaugh to figure it out and succeed.
That said, Matt Campbell would be an option.
September 23rd, 2019 at 8:20 PM ^
Not advocating for Harbaugh to go but he needs to fix this mess and fix it quickly. Start by canning Don Brown - overrated
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:37 PM ^
I don’t understand the love of Campbell. He was a mediocre coach in the MAC, is a mediocre coach in the Big12, and 0-4 against his rival.
September 23rd, 2019 at 9:52 PM ^
I wouldn't say he was mediocre in the MAC, but I agree with the rest of your comment. I'm not sure its smart replacing a guy who can't beat his rival or win anything of note with a guy who can't beat his rival and hasn't won anything of note.
September 23rd, 2019 at 11:14 PM ^
Aside from back-to-back 8-5 seasons at freaking ISU, the dumpster of the Big 12.
MC wins over #3 Oklahoma, #4 TCU, and #6 WVU in three years.
Not to mention he has more top 25 road wins than Harbaugh while at Toledo.
