vague rumor mongering from GBMW = justin turner
i know there was another forum topic on this, but i dont think it was official then.
this morning i checked GBMW and they have listed an update, justin turner, as the player not qualified.
IF this is true, that is bad bad news for our already shaky depth.....
Indeed, this would hurt us pretty badly if Turner doesn't qualify.
So, will he be playing for us next year? How hard will it be for him to re-qualify or can he not even do that?
I'm not sure. The NCAA works for the best interest of the student-athlete, or at least they claim to, so I'd think if a player took summer courses or something to satisfy a missed requirement, it'd fly, but I dunno.
I try to take GBMW with a grain of salt, so does anyone know if this has been confirmed by any legit sources?
God I hope not. That would suck.
I think a poster on another thread said that Rivals had mentioned something about Turner, too.
F*ck My Life
I second that.
Anyone know what the deal is? ACT scores, GPA, etc.? I believe this is the last week of school for most students in Ohio, and seniors ususally graduate early.
I thought JT's GPA was fine, so it must be his standardized test score.
Sounds like some kind of statewide standardized test. But I heard that from the other board and really don't have a clue.
That would make sense, since you have a few opportunities to pass. But if he was having difficulty passing I'd think we would have heard about it sooner, since the first time you take it is at the end of your jr. year (I believe).
Please don't let this be true. I was looking forward to Justin Turner the most out of the guys that are not here already. I even thought he could start. DAMN IT!
I thought that is what was said. That he has another opportunity to take the test but if he doesn't qualify then there is trouble. Right? Where is the other Brian at? He knows about this kinda stuff.
Yeah, you can take those tests as many times as you want, I believe. In fact, if he can show any type of learning disability at all, even super mild dyslexia, he can get a crack at specialized testing, too, which would help him pass.
I'm assuming he's having trouble w/ the Ohio Graduation Test:
http://www.ode.state.oh.us/GD/Templates/Pages/ODE/ODEDetail.aspx?page=3…
Don't mean to sound like a dick, but that is the easiest test ever. I graduated with a 2.9 and did nothing but jerk off and burn in HS and still managed to get honors on four of the five sections as a junior. Unless they've made the test A LOT harder in the last eight years or so years I just don't get how you fail this test.
supposedly it is not grades/GPA ... its problems on a state wide standardized test.
The Clearinghouse may not even care about that if someone has the other qualifying scores, etc.
You can't get a high school diploma if you don't pass this test. I would assume that the Clearinghouse would care about that.
Actually, I believe, the school can award him a degree despite not passing all parts of the OGT. My girlfriend's a teacher, I'll ask her. I'm pretty sure that's how it works.
This test is taken for the first time at the end of sophomore year. It's also SUPER easy. The fact that Turner hasn't passed yet means he's probably failed it at least 4 times. I have no idea how he was able to get an 800 on his SATs if he couldn't pass the Ohio Proficiency Test.
It's possible that he has a learning disability in a specific area that is giving him trouble. If he's passed the other 5 sections but is having trouble with just this one, then that could be the issue.
Once again, the state of Ohio getting in the way. Fuck Ohio.
I'm pretty sure the state has to do something like this to comply w/ No Child Left Behind.
Maybe his grader knew Justin was going to Michigan so he purposely failed him.
That was one of the first things I thought of too. Thats a little sad, but hey, this is Ohio we are talking about...
First of all, don't defend Ohio. I know you live there, and I'm sorry. It doesn't make it OK.
Secondly, it was a joke. Chill out, it's only Monday.
No animosity here.
"No Ohioan Left Behind."
That was for bluebloodedfan who thinks I'm a big meanie in defending OSU types at all opportunities.
Shakesepere, himself could not have said it any better.
An 800 sucks. That is like answering 2/3 of the questions wrong.
I think most people forget the SAT is now out of 2400 points, not 1600. I'm assuming by 800 he meant 1200.
Yeah I know. That is still terrible.
So is my athletic ability relative to his.
2400 points now? How did I go through this much time not knowing this?
Per people on another website, this is a rumor and is being looked into... By the way the rumor comes from a Butthole fan who is supposedly in the know. Take this for what its worth... Also, Im not an insider and never claimed to be one.
It keeps being described as a "buckeye rumor". To me Turner has always seemed at least somewhat bright to me with what I thought was a pretty good GPA.
Until it is proven to be anything more than a "buckeye rumor" started by a buckeye fan then I am not going to believe it.
Yes, I need me a little TomVH on the scene to clarify this horrible rumor.
uhmm, so i dont wanna be bashed for this. but if this is true and turner doesn't qualify, there could be 3 out of a class of 22 academically ineligible...have we ever had this at michigan before?
Supposedly JG (jeremy Gallon) is on track to qualify for this year as well...
The Rivals mods are insistent that we won't know if Gallon will qualify until August. So he hasn't qualified, but he hasn't run out of chances yet, either.
mean no Summer workouts/ practices with the team, if he isn't fully qualified by then? That would suck.
I believe he could still come in and take part in the voluntary workouts this summer. But he would be unable to take part in practices.
Eh, I'm going to wait until the fall to worry about 3 of 22 possibly not qualifying.
fwiw, GBMW says he has one more chance to pass the test. maybe he should talk to derrick rose...
Shit cock balls
Okay, this is what my girlfriend, who is a teacher, told me about the Turner situation. There are two parts to the OGT, Math and Reading. The first time you take the test, your sophomore year, there are multiple choice and free-response. If you don't pass this first time, every time after there is only multiple choice. So, the test gets easier, the more times you have to take it. You can take it once your sophomore year, twice your junior year and senior year.
Now, the school can award a diploma if the student has the correct exceptions. These would be learning disabilities, high ACT/SAT scores, or high GPA. There are other exceptions, but the school needs to decide if they will give a diploma or not. Once they decide yes, it has to be approved by the State. If he's approved by the state, he's good to go.
I'm impressed that any one of us has a girlfriend.
I thought we were all 28-year-old, greasy, bearded men living in our parents' basements.
tpilews: So what happen's if a student doesn't pass the Ohio state tests?
girlfriend: Well, even if they don't pass the first time, they still get more chances. Also, the student can still graduate high school without passing as long as the state approves. Why are you wondering?
tpilews: There's this 17 year old who hasn't passed the test yet. I don't know him personally, but whether or not he passes the test is a matter of great importance to me.
surprised me.
Anyway, I highly doubt the state would pass a kid going to Michigan, even if he can get past his school. That official would not get reelected if that were made public (very sad, kind of disgusting, but true).
Hopefully, he passes the test on his own.
The University of Michigan is immaterial to whether or not Turner is passed.
