useless recruiting weekend

Submitted by prunell shorts on
What was supposed to be a "huge weekend" is a bust. There's like 7 or 8 inches of snow, with more coming on the way. Think what must be going through those recruits minds. I dare say Sam Montgomery, Jayron Hosley, and Denard Robinson can't wait to be back home.

Weather definitely makes an impression on recruits, but I think there are so many other factors they consider that to call it a bust is a bit premature. In my opinion a big snow storm is actually a lot more fun than freezing cold rain in November when you have to stand outside for an entire football game on the windy sidelines. Snow is novel to some of these kids, cold, wet rain, not so much. Take them sledding in the arb. Have a snowball fight. Etc... They're 18 yr old kids who may have never seen snow before.

that's true if that happens, but you don't know. you may be right that the weather may not be the reason why they don't come. but I don't think there's any way this snow will help. the recruits have to fall in love with eeeeeeeee barwis, RR, and Michigan itself. With all the whiten, it's easy to be distracted.

are not exactly neandrethals. I'm sure they're well aware and have been reminded by the coaches about the unsavory Michigan winters. I'm sure they're also reminded of the fact that they have a chance to play right away for the most storied program in NCAA history, and an even better chance of being part of our glorious comeback and revolution. The kids that are visiting know what they're up against, climate-wise. They want to see if the rest of the experience compensates for that. A lot of those kids weren't Michigan leans to begin with, but I'm still feeling good about Denard.

The coaches have to address the weather with the southern players. They need to sell the snow and cold. 1. If you want to play in the NFL, you need to get used to this weather. 2. Its fun to have snowball fights! 3. You can wear bulky jackets that are both warm AND stylish. 4. Its Michigan, wait 5 minutes, the weather will change.

who cares if there is snow on the ground. these kids knew what they were potentialy getting into. its not always going to be 80+ degrees and sunny here, i'd mutch rather these kids come up here now and get a taste of real michigan weather. you also have to remember this it typically doesn't snow during the football season here.

Well RR should do what all great coaches do: change the climate. Why do you think the south is so warm? They have awesome coaches! In all seriousness, I think it depends on the person. I have cousins from Miami who had never seen snow (even until the age of 20) and loved it when they visited me in NY and it finally snowed. Then there are some who just don't like the cold- so snow or not, it wasn't going to be 75 and sunny in Ann Arbor. It's no secret, winters in Ann Arbor can be brutal.

it's the ESS EEE SEE speed. They run so fast, the friction warms everything up. But credit the coaches for recognizing the need for speed in the ESS EEE SEE, and recruiting those players. And I totally agree that the coaches there are awesome. Just awesome. Gawdamn, do I love those awesome bastards. No homo. Seriously, snow is nothing. Extreme cold I can understand, but snow? I had several friends from Florida, SoCal and other warm places, and they loved the snow; just hated the cold. Personally, the only ones I've heard bitch about the snow are usually from Michigan or other parts of the Midwest.

Hah! I never thought about that, but that makes sense. And of course, the kids in the south gain that speed by catching jack rabbits. On your second point-Agreed. I remember when I was on a project in Atlanta last winter, and it "snowed" there... (very light) Everyone was excited, pretty much like kids. Snow is awesome, it's the rain that blows (no homo.) I'm more concerned about the hockey recruits visiting in the summer months....

It's not like these kids from Florida and South Carolina are like, "Holy shit! I didn't know there was snow in Michigan!" Besides that, they might as well experience it. I'd rather a kid say "Thanks but no thanks" now than have him say that after spending a winter or two being miserable and then transferring. It's not a big deal. Go blue.

My daughter visited AA when it was blizzarding and 10 degrees and thought it was the best place ever and ended up going to Michigan for four years. You think things are appreciably better in Columbus or Happy Valley or Champaign? Yet high quality people commit every year to cold weather schools. Take the lads out for some cross country skiing followed by some single malt and a nice meal at the Gandy.

The coaches are good salesmen. They know that the winter and snow are a negative for the southern kids, so I'm sure they spin it into a positive. "The great thing about the winters in Ann Arbor is the brand new indoor facilities we'll have available for you, so you can practice all year round." It's not like they're walking around blocking the windows so no one can see the snow.

about the new facilities Tom. That new practice facility is going to be amazing. Plus, I'm sure there is discussion about how in June, July and August when they are busting their asses outside, it will mostly be in the 80's instead of the 90's with 100% humidity. Offseason is for lifting weights indoors anyway, and we have Barwis and the awesome new conditioning facility digs.

The incessant whining and negativity by some posters on this board is getting insufferable. Did you honestly think that any kid coming in this week didn't know that it snows in Michigan in the winter?

Woah there buddy, saying that it is your first day on this blog I don't think it is the best introduction to tell someone to get lost, especially someone who has been in this blog for a hell of a lot longer than you have. We here like constructive criticism, present facts that support what you are saying. Do not just call someone a queer or tell them to get lost because they disagree with you. As far as snow in Michigan, Ann Arbor is absolutely gorgeous at night with the snow fall, especially on Main St. with all the lights and what not.

I was born and raised in Southern California. I love the snow, and came to Michigan to get the f*ck away from the terrible weather back there (80 degrees at Christmas!? It's sickening!). You never know how a recruit feels about the snow.

So, it has probably become pretty clear to you that the habitual posters on this blog do not take well to negativity or even the hint of negativity. To be fair to you, the point you were making was harmless... would it have been nice to be 60 degrees and sunny, sure. The fact is, though, these kids expect the cold, the coaches have their standard pitches to sell the weather, other coaches will say you don't want to go there because it is so cold, etc... Some kids will listen, others will not. So goes the cycle of recruiting, year in and year out. Perhaps a slightly less negative intro "useless recruiting weekend" followed by "What was supposed to be a "huge weekend" is a bust." should be replaced with, "I hope this snow storm doesn't negatively affect our standing with the really talented southern recruits that are in town this weekend." Back to work...
